From memory only:
The Paddington working after the closure of Ilfracombe was an out and back, using one of the London division commuter sets. 0825 off Padd on a quick Google.
The odd Barnstaple to Waterloo was IIRC a spinoff from the use of 33s on Exeter area local services to replace 31s/25s. Loco hauled workings on the branch were a feature or Summer Saturdays for several years (there were two on weekdays but these were 4 coach only, the diagram including a trip up to Basingstoke). One of them left BTP at 0825, and someone obviously had the idea of using the rather better set for the 1010 (?) St Davids to Waterloo, which was otherwise spare, on this... (at the time, the Waterloo sets were stabled at Newton, later Laira).
Not sure how long this lasted into the NSE era, sorry, it may only have been a year or two, because at some stage the Basingstoke working and its..balance mentioned above became part of the main Waterloo diagrams, continuing on thethe 1010
There was no equivalent down train, because it could only have been the set off the 1510 W'loo, which was far too late in the day to be any use.
