Last nights problems at Sandy and elsewhere.

Went to London last night and arrived at approx 18-00 no problems going but coming back and arriving at Kings Cross at 21-00 to find big delays.

The 20-35 to leeds was delayed and others delayed due to an incident, never seen Kings Cross station so empty, was down to one train heading Cambridge direction the only train in the main station and the rest of the platforms empty.

The 20-35 to Leeds had an approx departure time of 21-45 and the 21-35 was cancelled. First train to arrive was Grand Central one which was greeted by 2 B.T. Police and 2 B.T. PCSO,s to be followed by 2 more B.T. Police with all 6 gathered in First Class coach.

Three more trains arrived and 20-35 platform announced as platform 1, the train made an additional call at Retford as the 21-35 had been cancelled and was running approx 80 mins late due to a signalling problem followed by a 2 hour stoppage at Sandy due to an incident.

Anyone know what the incident was then?

Also throughout the train the Wi-Fi was free for both First and Standard class passengers because of the delay to the service.

A fatality at Sandy was what I'd heard. I was on the 2030 to Hull, which was actually a train from a couple of hours previous which never left Kings Cross and as a result had two trainloads of people on it as far as Grantham. Got to Retford about 35 late, and from the sounds of it a fair few people had missed onward connections. Not a good couple of days as I'd got caught up in the fatality at St Neots on Monday as well.

A body was found on the line but it wasn't clear exactly when or even if the person was struck by a train. Ascertaining the details took a while. Particularly nasty circumstances for all.

It was a very long day yesterday, and I must say passengers were very understanding and cheerful despite delays running into many hours in some cases. That'll teach me to 'pop' into work at 1500, only to get home just after 0100.

It wasn't just the fatality, there were significant knock-on delays caused by the signalling problems at Darlington yesterday afternoon, which meant most KGX-bound trains were already nearly an our late before they reached the Sandy area.

Yes that's what we where told. Driver of a GN walked back & confirmed it was a body. Nobody reported striking the poor soul.

That's the second fatality in two days on that section of the ECML - there was another at St Neots on Monday. Incredibly sad.

I understand this pattern, with the changing season, is not unusual (assuming they were both suicides, which is unclear).

As mentioned earlier, power failure at Darlington effectively brought the east coast main line to a halt at around 15:30 with movement starting around 18:00, although TPE ran a NCL-DHM shuttle and EC ran a couple of HST's around the durham coast route. Typically just as disruption starts to clear as the delayed trains headed south and got past peterborough the fatality was reported, again bringing the ECML and those already delayed trains once again to a stand!

I was late turn Thunderbird driver at Kings Cross and was told to get the 67 out the East sidings and attach to a train and drag it via Cambridge to get around the disruption but just as I was about to couple up the shunter said the line had reopened and my services were not required although I do believe the HST that was meant to form the 19.06 to Lincoln went via Cambridge as a driver and guard who both lived in Peterborough and wanted to get home eagerly volunteered their services.

Actually the 3rd in 3 days. They had one on Sunday at Enfield Chase because all trains were already diverted via the Hertford Loop because of engineering work on the main line
