Theoretical question

If I were to buy an end-to-end ticket which includes a connection (so 2 "journeys" on one ticket), but started the first journey too late to be able to make the connection, what would my options be on arriving at the halfway point? I'm not planning to try this, but just curious.

Assuming the late start is your choice, it depends on the ticket.

Advance- follow the itinerary (not sure one would be issued anyway, unlike eg on DB)

Anytime/Offpeak Day - tough, new ticket needed on day 2.

Offpeak - continue next day on the first available train that complies with the ticket's time restrictions.(Potential hassle if it's the outward half; also some offpeak tickets forbid break of journey, in which case see previous item).

Anytime - continue by any train within the validity period

(Note - none of this is dependent on your having to change trains.)

It is certainly possible to buy advances with a three hour overnight break in Milton Keynes using the 0139 from Euston and 0537 from Milton Keynes. As you say it is a matter of following the itinerary. Not sure how many other opportunities like this exist.

AIUI UK railway days overlap, so a day starts at midnight and ends 28 hours later at 4am.

Sorry that's not right. Its always been the case if you can't finish your journey at the end of the day you can use the tickets on the first train of the next day.

A ticket is like a contract. Once you purchased it the railway will take you to your destination.

I'm not sure that's the case for Off-Peak Day Singles. According to NRES:

4.3 Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Day tickets are valid for travel on the date shown on your ticket and until 04:29 on the following day.

As compared to Off-Peak Singles:

4.4 Off-Peak Singles and the outward portion of Off-Peak Returns are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following morning. If the journey cannot be completed in this time, the ticket may be used to continue the journey on the following day.

As long as you have started your journey you have the right to continue it. That has always been the case.

There extremely few people who will do this as it usually requires you to spend several hour hanging around the station for the first train on the day.

This is not considered a break of journey.

Which begs the question then why it is explicitly stated for Off-Peak tickets but not for Off-Peak Day tickets.

I wouldn’t want to rely on your assurance when all the available documentation says differently.
