trying to plan trip in USA and wife wants to go to vegas,what is nearest station and how do i get from station to city.

Where will you be flying to? unfortunately you wont be able to get there by rail for at least 20 years

I went to Vegas in 2003 via Amtrak Thruway bus from Bakersfield. I returned on a Greyhound to LA.

As Yew said, it depends very much where you are coming from and going to!

I have also seen bus links from a place caleld Needles in California. If memory serves, this is the closest railroad station to Las Vegas now. I think there may also be buses to/from Salt Lake City.

I used the Amtrak joureny planner, and I found it very good for planningmy entire trip:

Chicago-Seattle-San Luis Obispo-Las Vegas-Los Angeles-Alberquerque-Chicago

yes east to west,still alot of planning to do.We have done organised tours before but you never get enough time at some places so thought we would go on our own this summer.

I have always preferred to organise my/our own trips, though organised tours can provide some good ideas when you look at the itineraries! There are always some places you aren't too bothered about, though, and others where you'd like to stay longer!

I'd quite like to do Washington/New York - San Francisco via New Orleans!

Hi there,
As the others have said, there's no passenger service to Las Vegas.

If you absolutely have to get there by rail then you're going to have to do a hobo impression and jump onto a freight train.
Sounds fun but probably a really bad idea to actually do!

A more sensible approach is getting the coach from Bakersfield or LA.

An alternative sensible approach is to get the train to Burbank (on the outskirts of LA) and then fly from Burbank airport to Las Vegas. Southwest are currently offering about 8 or 9 flights a day for $60 per person each way.

I've done the transfer between the train and airport at Burbank. It's not far at all and there was a free stuttle between them which took about 2 minutes. I think you can walk it but there's a busy road to cross.

Enjoy your trip, I've done some great US train trips and I'd recommend it.

I would concur with flying, the market from LA to Vegas is very well served and is pretty competitive resulting in some good fares. And arriving over The Strip at night is something I would recommend to anyone!

Amtrak provides a connecting bus from Kingman, Arizona around 100 miles from Vegas. this connection meets the Southwest Chief train to and from Chicago.

there is also a Rail/bus connection from the San francisco bay area to and from Las Vegas.

at some point in the next year, it is proposed X train will start running LA to Vegas direct, filling a market Amtrak gave up several years asgo when the Desert Wind train stopped running.
