Largest stations without a convenient pub

Crewe

There are a couple of dire pubs within 10 minutes walk, otherwise 20 minute hike to the town centre where are at least 3 fine establishments!

Warrington Bank Quay, need to walk 10 minutes to the town centre

Tamworth, need to walk 10 minutes to town centre, then lots of options!

Stevenage, need to walk 10 minutes to the old town

I’d recommend the Chequers in Stevenage Old Town. Nearer to the station than the other Old Town pubs and always a good choice of ales.

For more than 20 years Cambridge would have qualified for this. There was no pub near the station between the closure of the old Station Hotel and the opening of the current Station Tavern.

The Old Ticket Office is superior to the Station Tavern IMO

Bournville village is dry - but the other side of the railway bridge is Stirchley, one of my absolute favourite parts of Birmingham, home to many excellent bars and restaurants and no fewer than 3 breweries. Attic brewery is right outside Bournville station, and (for my money) the best brewery in Brum, Glasshouse, is a short walk down the towpath. Many a very happy summer afternoon spent outside Glasshouse!

I'm not sure that Port Sunlight was ever dry.

As well as the Bridge Inn (which could conceivably have been considered to be a hotel rather than a pub in Lever's day), there is the Railway Inn by Bebington station which looks to me to (just) still be within the Village.

As an aside, Lord Leverhulme has been reassessed and is no longer seen as entirely a "good egg".

Walsden. The Border Rose - which seems to open and close with monotonous regularity - is nearly a mile away.

However it’s closing tomorrow for around 3 weeks (most of July) for refurbishment if anyone planning on going soon

Also popped into the pub on Hexham Station a few weeks back which had a couple of very nice Loch Lomond brewery ales on. Got so comfortable I nearly missed the train

For ending Cambridge's period of not having a convenient pub, the Station Tavern is superior because it opened first.

How far is the closest pub to Dent?

Sportsman Inn, Cowgill, is 1.2 miles, according to Google maps.
Dent "Town", with its two pubs, is 4.4 miles away.
However, Dent Station is hardly a 'largest station' but it is the highest above sea level/

Until the Spoons opened up just outside, Bristol Temple Meads was from memory one such station.

Probably because it was eminently forgettable....despite the rather splendid interior. I did once have a drinkable pint of Butcombe Bitter in there....about twenty years ago.

Are Port Sunlight and Bournville still “dry” towns? I believe Saltaire no longer is. Actually, was Lever a teetotaller like Salt and Cadbury?

Don't know about Bournville. I think Lever had a 'no pubs' policy but there is now quite a pleasant pub in the middle of Port Sunlight which I seem to think was built as a 'temperance' social club. It's hardly near a large station though; you wouldn't change trains there but it is well worth a visit (Port Sunlight itself, the Art Gallery, the architecture and ambience, not particularly the pub which is not a destination in itself). Frequent service (6tph) on Merseyrail Wirral Line.
