After weeks of looking through overpriced crap, I decided to take a proper look at the apple site, and the second (£830) macbook seems pretty much perfect
Stupid good mac.

EDIT: sod the second one, im just gonna get the cheaper one, but with a 120gb hdd

You can get the older MacBook's cheap on Ebay shops if you want to save a bit of money. You can have a look at mine next time you're up this way if you like.

My two cents...

- Avoid Vista (it's what made me buy my MacBook Pro).

- The MacBooks are good, but they have integrated graphics that use system RAM, so pretty dire for proper gaming. But as you're not doing any, you should be okay. There is some discussion that integrated graphics that use system RAM can slow down your computer. I've seen this on PCs, but don't have enough experience with Macs to comment reliably.

- If you want to run Windows apps for which there is no Mac equivalent, then learn about Boot Camp - boot in to XP. It can be tempremental to get set up, but once it's on there it's great. Then, get hold of a copy of Parallels or VMWare, and you boot that same XP installation in a Window while running OS X.

- Finally, give OS X a chance. If you're not a Mac person, it will take some getting used to, but be patient and it will pay off. I really like my Macbook Pro!

- PS - go to your local Mac store and buy your Macbook over the counter - easier, faster and no waiting! (Unless they're out of stock, check in advance!).


@777fred - The last few Dell systems I've set up haven't had AOL on them. They tend to ship with Tiscali or Orange or both. And anyways, PC Decrapifier will get rid of the junk that Dell ship on their systems anyway. (I recommend Dell in a professional capacity, both for home users and businesses, and both laptops and desktops).

I wouldn't recomend using Parallels for games as my school had it and the graphics were simply awful when running Windows. Now they have MiniMacs without Mac!

If you HAVE to get a macbook (God knows why you want one) Then just whip out Mac OS out and put in XP or Vista. Then you will be around something you know.

Wouldn't it be much easer to just buy a normal laptop, paint it white and stick an apple logo on the back of the screen? :roll:

Easier maybe. Cheaper no. Remember money is more important here.

My laptop cost me less than £400 last year (deal on pcworld), and it has FOUR usb ports, but no card slots... suppose there has to be a trade off somewhere! Does what I want it to, which is to look at photos and check society memberships when out at shows when people complain they didnt get a magazine!

@liam - That's why I suggested setting up Boot Camp then configuring Parallels to use the same windows installation. Games performance in Parallels is, as you say, pretty dire - however there is DirectX support in the latest version; I just haven't played with it much with that setting enabled.

yeh.. just dont go for a macbook... go for hp/compaq/alienware or something similar.. they have never let me down and neither has my hp desktop. great graphics, sound etc..

and hp/compaq have a wonderful reset facility so if anything goes wrong you just press a couple of keys when it is starting up and resets its self in about 20 mins to how it was when it came from the factory.. just like new WITHOUT losing your files

if you really did want a macbook atleast wipe mac OS off it!

I don't intend to use Windows as the primary operating system on it though. It'll probably end up on there for certain things that won't install on OS X.

I wouldn't pay for an operating system that I haven't used in my life for £800. I'm more bothered about compatibility with games rather than all Macs fancy features. I've never been bothered about Widgets which has been the selling point of Vista and Mac.
