Why does it need to have 2GB of memory, as that pushes the price up by about £100?

Our company uses HP and Toshiba laptops
Personally, I prefer the HP ones and use these ones myself, my home PC is HP as well

I say, get a decent laptop or just which one you want, rip out Windows and run Linux. Problems solved, then you don't need to crack out the safe for a anti virus program!

I would say it needs it as i'd hate to see how high it would be running on RAM with only 1gig

My Laptop is running at 43% at the mo. I wouldn't say you need such a high processor either. the T5500 at 1.67GHz runs everything excellently and as you say, you aren't looking for gaming. 1.67Ghz 120Gb 2Gb DDR2 £480

You can get a prog that gets rid of the pre-installed c*** on Dell laptops & pc's, but it's just as easy to get rid of it yourself anyway. Yeh, the Latitude are better laptops, wish I had got one now instead of what I got. XPS are good, providing you got the money for one. But, I think when it comes time to get a replacement, it will prob be either a Sony Vaio, or a Mac.

We already have anti virus programs. Besides, I never said I'd be using the internet with it (not straight away anyway ), so there wouldn't really be much need for an anti virus.

And I'm not using Linux. I want Windows, end of.

Do you want a desktop relacement? (ie, use a laptop all the time instead of using a desktop PC, DVD capability, probably a 17" screen and a high spec.)

Or do you want a highly-portable device? (ie, something to carry everywhere? So it would need to be small, lightweight, long battery life, shock-resistant, and something like a 10" or 12" screen)

Well, I'm still gonna be using my desktop computer, so I don't want a complete replacement. I want something that does mostly what my computer does, but portable.

It wants long battery life, and wants to be quite portable.

I'd like a multimedia card reader, and also a CD drive would be nice.

Multimedia keys on the keyboard would be good too, but alot of laptops I've been looking at don't have them. Not overly bothered about this though.

Also I'd like more than two (I'm don't know how many the average laptop has...) USB ports. At least one of which could do with being Hi-Speed, but I'm not gonna be too picky about it if they're Lo-Speed ones.

It was pretty much obvious that a mac would suit her needs.

However, Gizzy, it's good that you know to spend a bit more and get a decent laptop rather than a poorly engineered laptop. I'd also suggest wiping it when you get it and installing it fresh without all the crap.

I don't really want a mac...I'd much rather stick to what I know.
And yes, obviously buying a good pricey laptop is better than buying one for half the price and having to get another after a year

And yes After experiences with Dell, I know to get rid of all the crap first

They're great once you get used to them though, I just got my new MacBook today

Keep an eye on the clearance section on the PC World website, there's the occasional bargain on there (mostly **** though, so be careful).

Try a Tablet, they are good, PDA's are alright but don't really work too well. Toshiba M400 Tablet/Laptop is good, not sure if they are out yet though as i had one under a year ago when my dad was trying them out for BCC before they was rel.
