I'm gonna get myself a laptop (eventually)
Not really sure what to go for at the moment though...
Gonna try and stay with the big names. Preferrably Dell.

Minimun specs...
1.8ghz
2gb of memory
250gb of hard disk
128mb graphics card

It's gonna be used for leisure and work purposes. I don't really play games on computers (apart from Theme Hospital and such other crap ) so it doesn't need an over the top graphics card or anything.

Could do with being under £700 if possible too.

Any advice, decent review websites, etc?

Oh yer, get a Mac! Schools and some business' now use Macs instead of that cheap stuff the builder leaves behind, mainly because they're faster and more reliable. However i doubt a Mac is in your price range.

Well, I'm not really familiar with macs, so I'd rather stay with what I know.
The new MacBooks start at about £700 according the the Apple site.

it's actually quite hard to find laptops with 250gig of memory for under £700. You can find them on ebay but you won't know how much of a life they'e had and whether they are still reliable. Try one from 80gig, upto 250. the results on www.kelkoo.co.uk are good.

Well, those are just the min specs that I want there.
Obviously, if I can get better for under £700, then it's all good.
Dell seem to be giving me some decent options ...they don't include VAT and shipping on their prices when you're playing around building computers though lol
I also want the best battery possible.

Macs (or Macintosh if your that posh ) are designed to be compatable with Windows XP without all that added fuss of virus protection, poor reliabilty and so for those who haven't seen the Mitchell and Webb adverts! If I had the money i'd certainly get a Mac!

You still need virus protection if you're planning to run XP on Mac really.

The only thing it fails on is the hard disk size (by 90GB) but like I say this is only a brief search I've done so there could be more out there.

I have a Toshiba Satellite and it is very good, having only frozen once in having it. I paid £500 for it in Sept 2005 from Comet. It's nowhere near 250gb but prices may have changed since then, I've never needed that much anyway.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite and has lasted me well, but I'm currently looking for a cheap(ish) iBook on Ebay too.

Nothing wrong with Dell, I got an Inspiron 6400. Intel Core2 T7200 CPU 2Ghz, 1gb memory, 80gb hard drive, ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 graphics. The Dell XPS range are good, providing you got the money. Depends on what you want really, Dell have a wide range of laptops, just depends on what you want etc.

Also worth considering getting one with a smaller HDD and then making up the capacity with an external. Not the best option of you want total portability though, but could well save you a fair few quid.

I bought an Acer 5611WLMI (or something like that) for around 500 to 600 quid, before I left to go back to Australia. It's served me well. XP/Linux dual-boot.

I guess Dell are good for one thing only. Putting Linux on the PC's (Don't know about Laptops) on request as the public didn't (Don't) like Vista.

If you do get a Dell, see if you can't get a Latitude instead of an Inspiron, the Latitudes are better built and last longer... or should do!

Mind you since they introduced the latest range (Dx30), they don't seem to have dedicated graphics of any form. Least I got mine before then.
