Laptop enquiry

Hi all,

Looking for advice and opinions really. Wife has set her heart on a laptop we saw today. Seems very good but I've never heard of the make before.they are called Lenovo.

Anybody heard of them or better yet can tell me their experience with them please

Lenovo is the old consumer and SME end of IBM.

If you've seen it in a shop it's proberbly a consumer end one, and I'd rate them over othe consumer gear in the price range, but not as highly as the business kit. (That you can still get with Windows 7)

I'll be assuming that it's a Lenovo G series (Gxxx) or one of the convertables, I don't see any issues with them and have no horror stories, but they fall fowl of what the rest of the consumer laptop industry does, they put good headline specs on in sacrifice of good basic system performance.

We use the Lenovo T Series and W Series at work (when we can get them past procurement), but these Start at around £800 new...

Lenovo are a Chinese company that acquired the PC division of IBM; which is where the Thinkpad range of notebooks originated. No experience of them but they are still used by some corporates.

Try Google. Lenovo had the world's largest sales of PCs in 2013. Like the former IBM products that preceded them, their kit is usually solid and generally reliable in my limited experience.

Chinese company which purchased PC part of IBM (and the phone part of Motorola from Google), business laptops seem to be good (although comparing my works Lenovo laptop against my previous 8 year old Dell desktop is like comparing HS1 with a hand-driven railway cart).

If it comes with Windows 8 (or 8.1), install a little program called "Classic Shell", it brings back the proper start menu and you will rarely have to use the Metro screen.

Try to find reviews on-line or in magazines comparing the model you are interested in with machines of a similar spec. Read the whole review as some reviewers may look for features that you are not bothered about. Check the spec meets your requirements and preferably the machine is not overspecified for your needs. Compare prices against machines of a similar spec.

My personal preference has been Dell, because the service I have had from them has always been good, but I currently have a Toshiba bought from their outlet. A number of members of my family have bought from Toshiba Outlet and never had any complaints. Dell have an online outlet. Outlet stock is usually refurbished returned equipment. You do not get the latest model, but he price is normally competitive. A Dell Outlet machine I bought was a cancelled order.

As for Lenovos, we have a few business ones at work. They seem generally ok though the latest ones we got (E531) have some odd features such as touchpads that are the clicking buttons and rectangular power adaptor plugs

I'm wanting to move us to Dell in due course to standardise what we have (and to make my life easier when building them for the users) though I have no particular qualms over the robustness of the Lenovos

Lenovo - have 1 and was a good piece of kit, but had headline specifications for memory, but processor was slow. I bought it in early 2010, my wife uses it as too slow for me.

Dell, I will never touch again, never had a system breakdown so much, their service was great but that didn't make up for the high number of days of inconvenience of no system availability. In one year my Dell laptop spent 246 days back for faults repair.

Toshiba, seemingly bullet proof, I had a toshiba from 2004-2010, without issue spec and processor was good. I've now just bought a new toshiba having lost patience with the Dell which is only 18 months old.

I currently have a Lenovo which I bought to replace a Dell. The Lenovo has proved to be far better than the Dell it replaced in terms o reliability.
