I have a pretty good idea of the sort of work covered by most depots over the years, but some are a bit of a mystery.

One such is Langwith Junction, which had a substantial allocation of freight locos.

I assume its work was largely coal within a Sheffield - Chesterfield - Nottingham - Worksop area but can anyone confirm?

They certainly went east over to Lincoln via Tuxford. Mostly shifting coal I believe.

The coal traffic over the LDEC from Langwith to Lincoln via Tuxford was huge, comprising three major flows:

  • to New England for onward movement to Ferme Park then North London and the Southern Region via the Widened Lines
  • to Whitemoor for East Anglia and onward movement to East London via Temple Mills
  • to Immingham for coastal and export shipping
In steam days the Langwith crews worked to Lincoln and back but I don't know the extent of through loco working to New England, Whitemoor and Immingham.

Chris Booth's book on the LDECR (vol 1) says of Langwith Depot, initially housed 2 tank engines, expanded as coal traffic grew in the area [me : closer to mines than was Tuxford], long distance & colliery shunting, also LDEC passenger services Lincoln to Langwith, Chesterfield, Sheffield Midland. Class 31 diesels ran to Immingham, Whitemoor, New England, based Darnall but outshedded at Langwith for traffic from Warsop or Mansfield Concentration yards, crews changed at Pyewipe or Bardney.

Around twenty 9Fs were transferred to Langwith Junction in January 1965, the majority reallocated from New England after it closed to steam. It would be interesting to know what duties they were allocated, although I suspect they were surplus to requirements and saw little use. All had been withdrawn or transferred away by the end of 1965. Three B1s were unexpectively transferred to 41J from Doncaster in July 1965, and remained until the shed closed in February 1966. These locos 61050, 61051 and 61315 saw further use in Departmental stock as Dep 30, Dep 31, Dep 32 respectively.
