I guess I'd have to tap at Stratford changing from train to Tube. Was going to just go round the loop and not leave the platforms. I'd go earlier in the day but time constraints.
If you touched out at the barriers at Stratford and then back in, you'd be looking at being charged the £9.50 off-peak fare each way. That does, however, rely on you making it back to Langley within the maximum journey time.
TfL doesn't publish the maximum journey times for journeys that involve travel outside the Zones - so I don't think they have any lawful basis to charge them for such journeys, if completed within a vaguely reasonable length of time. But we can guess that they work similarly to the published zonal maximum journey times, of adding 10 minutes per additional Zone. I think you'd be able to go around the Hainault loop within the maximum journey time, but it'd depend on how long you have to wait at Woodford and Hainault for the connections - and at Stratford/Whitechapel etc. for the right Elizabeth line train towards Langley on the way back.
Everything (trains, Tube and DLR) is behind a common gateline at Stratford, so you won't automatically touch in or out when you change there. You have to exit the barriers and re-enter if you want the journey to be 'broken'.
Depending on the exact time you leave, it may work out slightly cheaper to 'split' at Hayes & Harlington (i.e. touch out and back in there) as well as Stratford. It's complicated by the fact that you would pay a peak fare for the Hayes-Stratford journey if you touched in before 19:00, but even with that slight uplift you are still looking at a total cost of £14.50 vs £19.

If splitting by tapping out and back in at Hayes & Harlington (noting that you will need to change trains at some point anyway between Langley and Stratford), then the onward fare to Stratford is the same as to Woodford or Hainault (£5.20 peak / £3.60 off-peak), so the next tap-out-and-back-in can be done when waiting for trains at Woodford or Hainault instead of at Stratford for the same price (but if opportunity hasn't arisen to do it out on the loop then it can be done at Stratford on the way back). Assuming peak out and off-peak back, plus two £2.80 off-peaks between Langley and Hayes & Harlington, I make the total to be £14.40.
By the way, a railcard-discounted Off-Peak Day Travelcard from Langley costs £13.35, and is valid any time after 09:30.
I note that the undiscounted Off-Peak Day Travelcard from Langley costs £16.60, but the daily off-peak cap for contactless is £20.10 (according to this PDF listing contactless caps for journeys reaching outside Z1-9 linked from the National Rail contactless information page)... Edit: Not sure where I got the £16.60 from, it's £20.10 for both.

Langley to Stratford is, according to 'MikeWh's Oyster Fares Central website:

Thanks. That doesn't seem particularly generous; I suspect whether it's enough to go round the Hainault loop would depend on whether you just miss a Hainult-Woodford shuttle or not, and similarly when connecting back onto the Elizabeth line to Langley.
Touching out and back in at Fairlop or Hainault would make it a safer option.
Thanks for the prices and details. I'll make sure I walk out and back in somewhere on the Loop as I think that maximum time is too tight.
