Just found out my train and all other northern trains are cancelled along the hope valley. Apparently there has been a landslip at Chinley. Anyone know if this has happened at the same place as 2 years ago when a whole banking was replaced and reinforced?

What is worrying is that more heavy rain is forecast for the area tonight.

Not sure mate if its in the same place or not! But you're right they did a lot of work a couple of years back so not good news if it's back to square 1! Some trains appear to be running but there does seem to be major disruption. Hopefully you'll get back ok.

The National Rail website is claiming that First Transpenine services are calling all stations from Sheffield to Chinley/New Mills. I've checked the LDB (Live departure boards) and cannot find any evidence of FTP stopping at intermediate stations, I can only see the Northern stoppers doing the full Man-Shef route. Can anyone else shed any light?

I'm led to believe that there is some sort of single line running going on round the affected area, and that TPE services are running, but calling at additional stations and incurring delay.

What will happen from tomorrow onwards remains to be seen, but rest assured it sounds like it will be a shambles - if EMT aren't running Sheffield to Liverpool (which they seem to abandon at the first sign of anything out of the ordinary) then the already overcrowded TPE services between Liverpool and Manchester will be even busier, and I don't think there is enough space on the single line section to run all TPE, EMT and Northern trains along the Hope Valley. My gut feeling is that the Northern services will get cancelled and there will be some sort of Manchester - Sheffield shuttle service say once an hour, probably operated by TPE.

The following information from SYPTE 'Travel Disruptions' web page perhaps explains the current situation. No doubt Monday and Tuesday trains will be similar, but no information is given. Northern are running New Mills Central to Manchester stoppers only. National Rail suggests that Nottingham - Manchester / Liverpool passengers can travel XC via Birmingham, or XC/LM to Liverpool. VWC can be used Crewe / Stoke to Stockport and Manchester.

LANDSLIDE : CHINLEY

Due to a major landslide in the Chinley area, services between Sheffield and Manchester are subject to significant disruption.

The Down (Manchester bound) line will be blocked for several days. Single line working is in force on the Up line. This allows a limited train service to run.

For today (Sunday) TransPennine Express are operating a limited train service on the route, calling additionally to serve Northern stations. All Northern and East Midlands Trains services are cancelled.

The following emergency train plan has been put into place:

TransPennine Express (TPE) bus replacement service between Manchester Airport and Stockport (planned) is extended to operate between Manchester Airport, Stockport and Sheffield.

Sheffield to Doncaster TPE train service suspended (except certain morning services; see below). With these exceptions, customers to use alternative rail services between Sheffield and Doncaster.

Limited TPE train service operates between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield via Romiley not calling at Stockport and calling at additional intermediate stations in the Hope Valley. This will be the only train service to run between Sheffield and Manchester. The two hourly train service will be supplemented by a two hourly train service.

All planned TPE services between Manchester Piccadilly and Doncaster are cancelled; the following amended train plan will operate.

The following trains will run:

Sheffield – Manchester Piccadilly

1314 Sheffield - Manchester Piccadilly all stops to New Mills Central then fast to Manchester Piccadilly.

1514 Sheffield - Manchester Piccadilly all stops to New Mills Central then fast to Manchester Piccadilly.

1714 Sheffield - Manchester Piccadilly all stops to New Mills Central then fast to Manchester Piccadilly.

1914 Sheffield - Manchester Piccadilly all stops to New Mills Central then fast to Manchester Piccadilly.

2012 Sheffield - Manchester Piccadilly none stop.

2111 Sheffield - Manchester Piccadilly none stop.

Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield

1202 Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield all stations New Mills Central to Sheffield.

1358 Manchester Piccadilly - Sheffield all stations New Mills Central to Sheffield.

1558 Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield all stations New Mills Central to Sheffield.

1758 Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield all stations New Mills Central to Sheffield.

2000 Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield all stations New Mills Central to Sheffield.

2215 Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield none stop.

2320 Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield none stop.

Oh! .. and Doncaster / Manchester passengers are recommended to travel via Leeds

Thanks guys for the info - very interesting! I've been out all day so haven't checked the LDB. Did they show TPE services on the LDB as stopping at all stations NMC-SHEF? If so, what was the billed travel time between New Mills and Manchester if they were running non-stop? Northern's fastest New Mills Central - Manchester Picc trip is booked at 23mins.

Network Rail advised EMT to terminate their Liverpool Service at Sheffield. Wrong again, eh!

It wasn't me that made it, but the point stands. Liverpool - Sheffield with EMT is usually the first to go in times of disruption, it doesn't really matter who's decision it is.

Agree with you Rob. EMT are the first to pull a service when an issue arises. God knows how they cope with leaves on the line, never mind a landslip! ;)

Send them via Woodhead !!

Buxworth used to be 4 track, so there should be a bit of room to manouvre.

I wish Woodhead was open again. What a shame, I just missed seeing it as it was closed in 1981 and I was only 1 year old! Makes a nice walk these days alongside the reservoir.

Good old BR, eh? And some on here would like to see a return to a nationaised railway (which would seem to be a dissapearing railway!).

Lets think for a minute shall we? Are you familiar with that word think?
A landslip has occurred that has rendered one line unusable, neccessitating single line working over the opposite line. With the frequency of trains over the route, plus the crossing over at each end of single line working, it's going to put huge delays on all services, which would also cause a huge backlog. Something has to give somewhere. As stated earlier EMT were advised by Network Rail to pull the services, so you can hardly hold them responsible. As regards your last comment, we coped better than most this Autumn, and during the recent chilly spell, when some other TOC's were waving the white flag.

I work in one of the stations on EMT's route between Sheffield and Liverpool and if I remember rightly, we went over 72 hours without an EMT service passing through...

Regardless of your explanation, EMT were the last TOC to start up their services when sheff-Manc was shut due to snow. Appreciate that there are plenty of occasions where EMT have outperformed others but in my experience they are the first to shut up shop and the last to re-open.

And all the other TOC's were running a full service?
During situations like the big freeze, when disruption is sweeping the country, the availability of units decreases dramatically. We ourselves had big problems with diesel gelling and i'm sure other TOC's did too. If you had no EMT service for over 72 hours then, assuming that the line was passable and recieving a service from Northern, TPE or whoever, the the reason would be that available units were being concentrated on routes where EMT is the only operator, thereby ensuring as much of the network as possible recied at least a skeleton service. We even had Meridians bimbling up and down all stops between Lincoln and Nott's and down the Ivanhoe to Leicester.
I can tell you straight that everyone here at EMT did our best to keep some kind of service going.

I refer you Sir, to the above answer.
I must confess i cannot remember off the top of my head, any occasions where EMT has pulled all services on an entire route unneccessarily. Perhaps you would be so kind as to refresh my memory? It's not something they would do lightly as, apart from the disruption caused to the good folk who pay our wages, it's awfully bad for business and results in heavy financial penalties.

Engineers from Network Rail and its contractors worked round-the-clock at the weekend so commuters would be inconvenienced as little as possible this morning by a landslip that had blocked the main Manchester to Sheffield line.

Shortly before midnight on Saturday, Network Rail was contacted by Derbyshire police to say that a landslip from the railway had partially blocked the B6062 at Buxworth, near Chinley.

Staff sent to investigate discovered part of the embankment had slipped and was blocking one lane of the road. The slip was next to the Manchester bound railway line but as a safety precaution, both railway lines were closed.

Network Rail called out its contractors who brought tower lighting and excavators to the site.

Closer inspection revealed it was sandy soil that had been washed away, rather than the embankment itself, and that the railway track appeared to be unaffected.

This meant that first thing Sunday, the Sheffield bound line could be reopened with a 5mph speed restriction to allow the train companies to operate an amended timetable using the one line.

During the course of Sunday, approximately 400 tonnes of stone were brought to site and put into position using a long-reach excavator.

Work to rebuild the embankment was finished by 11 pm yesterday (Sunday 06 Feb) and an inspection of the track took place in the early hours of the morning, resulting in both lines being reopened with a 20 mph speed restriction.

Commenting on the efforts, Network Rail route director Jo Kaye said: “This is a perfect example of teamwork within the rail industry. We had the contacts and contracts in place to be able to mobilise people at short notice. We liaised with the passenger and freight train operators so they could offer customers a service on the Sunday, and we got the work completed to get both lines open in time for the Monday morning rush hour. I congratulate everyone involved on a job well done.”

it amazes me the age of the network how landslips are not everyday occurances, you have to hand it to the Victorian/Edwardian Engineers they built things to last (not like now lol)
