Landslip Early Warning Sensors - how do they work?

A post on the Shap derailment mentioned "Landslip Early Warning Sensors" and I have seen these before with rows of posts with a white square at the top
And I noticed today a few locations between Preston and Lancaster where these are in the cutting.

Just wondering how they work and how they test them to check they are working?

Don’t forget there is the rock fall early warning signalling system installed on a part of the West Highland line in Scotland. Originally a design from the 1880s, it’s still in use today.

Not quite sure how that would apply to an embankment slip?

Anyway RAIB are looking in to the derailment - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/derailment-of-a-passenger-train-at-shap

"Our investigation will determine the sequence of events which led to the derailment and will include consideration of:

  • the design, maintenance and management of earthworks and drainage in this area
  • the effectiveness of on-site monitoring equipment
  • the operational response to adverse weather warnings
  • the performance of the train during the derailment
  • any underlying factors which might have contributed to the derailment."
