Not a good day for Anglo-Scottish travel!

Today, the East Coast manline is closed between Berwick and Edinburgh, and while Cross Country have provided bus replacement services, East Coast are diverting via Carlisle. However, a landslip near Brampton (east of Carlisle) has now closed the line and so replacement busses are also operating between Hexham and Carlisle.

Are there paths available, and are there staff available who sign the route who can 'route conduct' the EC drivers?

EC do not sign that route and it is pointless running that way with a route conductor as what will passengers at York/Newcastle do?

Single line working pass the affected area, apparently its slurry from a farm not a landslip as such. But now a temporary block working is in operation between Blaydon -Hexham due to Vandals tampering with signalling cables.

I read on NRE that there are engineering works blocking the Leeds-Shipley line this weekend anyway - all Ilkley/Skipton/Carlisle & Morecambe trains are running from Bradford Forster Square.

In theory yes, in practice no.

To do it with planning would be hard enough, to do it on no notice would be virtually impossible as i doubt you could rustle up enough route conductors or train paths.

Not sure the S&C would be worth it on time grounds either - rather slow. Yes there is engineering work this weekend as well which renders that line unusable from Leeds anyway

An interesting "add-on" to the landslip here - the "land" which "slipped" was actually a farmer's field, complete with human slurry used as fertiliser...!

Glad I'm not clearing that one up!
