On the 18th June 2020 there were two ex Northern rail DMU's at Swansea Landore, unbranded but in Northern's purple and blue colours. From my vantage point one was clearly 142012. The second is stabled so close to 142012 that the DMU number is not visible, however, a carriage number 55775 can be seen on the unit. I cannot find this carriage number in my books and therefore cannot identify the DMU number. The carriage number is in a sequence that closely matches those used on 142xxx units operated by Transport for Wales (ex Arriva trains Wales) although it does not seem to have been operated by Transport for Wales. Which 142xxx DMU unit used carriage 55775? Could it be a hybrid unit made up from units that were damaged at some time?

55775 was in 142079. I have no idea if it still is!

3x Northern 142s were delivered to Cardiff for Transport for Wales to use as spares donors to keep their own fleet running. Pacers have frequently been moving between Canton and Landore so I don’t know what was where and when, but The numbers I have for the units are
142012, 142079 and 142086

So based on the information provided by pdeaves, it sounds like the unit you saw was 142079

My most grateful thanks to the members who have provided information regarding my Landore puzzle which has homed me in to a solution.
The ABC Rail Guides for 2013 and 2018 both show that 142079 consisted of carriages 55729 and 55769. The carriage 55769 seems to have followed a correct sequence when working backwards through the Northern Rail 142 units. Is it possible that 55775 was part of 142079 a very long time ago? When cross checking with number sequences of the Transport for Wales class 142's it shows that their Pacer 142080 contained carriage 55776 so it is logical that Pacer 142079 should have/would have contained carriage 55775... Both Northern and TfW number sequences suggest that 55775 should be in the make up of 142079 yet the ABC's for 2013/2018 dispute this. Could the ABC's have been wrong persistently? If not, where has carriage 55775 been hiding and who's been using it and has it been moved between Pacers?

I think there has been some confusion on the build numbers. The second batch of 142s (142051-096) had cars numbered 55701-55746 and 55747-55792, each numbered in order through the fleet, so 142051 was 55701+55747 through to 142096 as 55746+55792. So 142079's planned formation was 55729+55775 and as far as I know hasn't been re-formed?

Once again, thank you to all for the information supplied. The picture (with the help of the one supplied) is a lot clearer now. :D. The photo of 142079, together with the reality of what can be seen at Landore are worth a thousand words, or would that be a thousand numbers? The ABC's seem to be a bit off the mark! I'm a lot happier now - as is my grandson! Stay safe.

The Platform 5 books for 2018 and before/after show the correct formation for 142079.
I gave up in the ABC books in 1980 when I bought a book at Tinsley Open Day from what appears to have been the fledgling Platform 5 crew, and never looked back!
