Land slip between Winchester and Basingstoke

SWR twitter are currently reporting all lines blocked between the two due to a land slip. There’s some pretty deep cuttings in places, and there was a land slip which caused a derailment to a XC service at Wallers Ash 3 years ago.

Does anyone have further information.

⚠️ Due to a landslip between Basingstoke and Winchester the line towards Winchester is blocked.

Trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised because of this problem.

No photos or anything yet, although the SWR twitter rep has said this so far here:

"we haven't been provided with any pictures so are unable to share this unfortunately. The landslip isn't as major as the Hook one earlier this year."

There was some serious hale passing over an hour or so ago, which I would assume has caused it.

Live in the area; and we've had some torrential rain today. Unrelated as after the landslip, but drove up the M3 just now and traffic was doing 50mph max in the downpour, at least one car had skidded off the road.

Looks to be Down line only blocked between Winchester and Micheldever, as 1W33 is stuck in the Down platform at Micheldever and trains are working over the Up Line with bi-di/SIMBIDS signalling.

EDIT: 1W33 has just been signalled back towards Basingstoke.

Alton line is completely up the spout too. TCF at Bentley and flooding at Farnham where two trains are stuck. Had planned to go to the Aldershot Senior Cup Final tonight but decided early on that it was a write-off.

That was there all day yesterday as well. Doesn’t cause significant problems as far as RTT shows, because all up trains used P1.

As the down “Poole stopper” timings were altered a while ago, (it’s now mostly a Bournemouth stopper), there’s no longer a down train in the way half the time.

I've just been booted off the train at Basingstoke as there's a reported landslip between there and Winchester - no other details.

Anyone on the forum know more?

Shame, we've only just gotten over the one at Hook a few months back!

Extremely heavy rain and hail in the area most of the afternoon. Some pictures have been released now of the debris on the track. It looks similar to that previous fall in the same area

There's zero guidance or announcements at Waterloo as to when any service will be heading down towards Weymouth (and therefore Basingstoke for taxis). Even a "look, assume it's going to be a couple of hours" would be helpful for finding other routes, instead of standing around hoping.

Looks as though the piled and concrete sectional wall has possibly failed? Note the galvanised steel pieces in the right hand photo.

It certainly has, but did the failure cause the slip or did the slip cause the failure?

The slip looks quite rotational (although I'm far from an expert). I presume the rock visible is the Chalk of the area, it being the tail end of the South Downs, and not rubble/hardcore filling from a previous repair?

Hearing that the line will be closed until at least 1300 tomorrow with diversions where possible via Havant. Train service plan being worked on tonight.

Yes, that whole area of North Hampshire is mainly chalk, in railway route terms the whole of the mainline from about Shawford through Winchester to Basingstoke.

Looks like there might be issues in Brockenhurst also?

There is a broken rail on the up platform 2 line at Brockenhurst just after BH104 Points, so all trains running via Platform 1 as a result.
Problem was found nearly 2 weeks ago, they tried to repair last Thursday night but encountered difficulties.
Gather they are hoping to try to do necessary repairs at the end of this week now.

Hope this clarifies any worries you might have that this was weather related as well.

It's not the tail end of the South Downs, it's part of the North Wessex Downs AONB.

The chalk forming the South Downs, North Downs, Salisbury Plain and Chilterns is a single stratum, with a continuous outcrop, so there's no break point between them in the Winchester area.

Back on topic, there seem to be long delays and cancellations on the Direct this morning as well, though I'm unsure whether or not this is a result of diversions off the main line.

Departures board at Basingstoke now looks good. The only up delay is the next train from Weymouth but that lost time departing Poole anyway
