Lamp Brackets - Size?

Evening all,
Was wondering the dimensional of lamp brackets as found on stock today? I guess it’s the same standard size for universal attachment of tail lamps, headboards etc etc

I should think that is something that hasn’t changed since the early years of the Grouping, nearly a hundred years ago. There would be too many problems changing it, as one generation of lamp has to fit on the same bracket as the previous ones (and nowadays probably several generations more).

do all vehicles have to have them? I can think of a few where they weren't obvious. HST for a start. (Or were they in the coupling cupboard?

As an example of a portable set up, in a thread a couple of years ago it was explained that the 442 lamp bracket was removable and only fitted when necessary:

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

The one thing they don't have is a lamp bracket on the outside. Watched someone try to put a rear lamp on one - after 5 mins they wedged one behind the windscreen with a piece of wood..... There is a removable lamp bracket in a cupboard in the vestibule behind the secondman’s seat. Fits in to...

HST lamp bracket mount is central and visible on the nose cone and the bracket itself is kept in the guards compartment. It is different to most as the part which inserts into the bracket is angled at 45 degrees. Regarding other stock 321s have a flip down bracket under the ‘bonnet’ as an example, I’m sure there are many other units with similar/similarly interesting methods.

As the size can't have varied much over the years (as mentioned above), taken from a copy of a SR Eastleigh drawing of 1927:
Joggled out: 1/2";
Height: 5";
Width: 2 7/32", tapering upwards to: 1 27/32";
Thickness: 7/16".
Sorry, no idea what that is in French.

While we are on lamp brackets, I have seen them on static bits of the railway. I think on bufferstops. and maybe on old style manual gated crossings. Anywhere else?

With buffer stops, crossings, etc. the idea was that the lamp could be removed so that it could be cleaned, trimmed and refilled at a safe distance from the running line. However, the mountings tended to rust and it often became easier to do the work without removing the casing. (Ah, happy memories of sitting on a rail adjusting the wick as EMUs shot past my backside.)
