RailwayGazette said:
NIGERIA: CRRC Dalian has unveiled its first metro train for Lagos. The Type B set is based on the design for Tianjin metro Line 2, but with four cars rather than six.

Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority ordered 15 trainsets from CRRC Dalian in January 2015 for US$14·7m, with an option for 14 more. This replaced an earlier plan for second-hand Toronto metro cars to operate the city’s metro.

The steel-bodied trains have two motor and two trailer cars, giving them a maximum speed of 100 km/h, although the maximum service speed will be 80 km/h. They will draw power from a third-rail supply.

The trains are due to operate on the 27 km Blue Line, which will serve 13 stations from Okokomaiko to Marina. The trains will be stabled at a depot at the western terminus of Okokomaiko.

As a Nigerian myself, I can just say that I'm really glad my country is engaging in modern infrastructure. This may not be to the likes of Britain's 'comprehensive, historical, famous and expansive network we should be proud of', but it's certainty progress, and progress is a vital key to a fast developing nation.

That is good to see. You dont generally hear much about the Nigerian railway networks. Ive just researched it a bit and it seems like seven different lines are being built. It is interesting that it is being built to standard gauge as i believe that most railway lines in Nigeria are narrow gauge.

The choice of standard gauge is not a big problem, due to the metro stock not interoperating with existing track. Not as if there's not much existing track to go on anyway...

Strangely enough I thought this thread was about Lagos, Portugal. Caused some amusement that they would build a metro in an average sized Algarve town ;).

Its great that African nations is building Metros and Trams. (Wish the more of the Caribbean would too). I do worry about taking a loan from the Chinese to finance Chinese stock. Africa and the Caribbean are a massive target for Chinese investment without any transparency. Having said that, I hope it all goes well and Nigeria continues to build!

So Lagos, Nigeria is a very fast expanding city. Do you think that the demand will be enough to sustain a metro in Lagos?

I think it should. Meanwhile, the city is bursting at its seams with overcrowded roadways and any capacity reliever is very welcome!

I didnt even know that there was a Lagos in Portugal!

Does anyone know when all seven lines will be completed? I presume it is still quite a few years away?

So far, there's no date for all 7 lines but the first one should be opened by December 2016.
