If i go from London to Paris, i can choose one of probably 10 airlines who will all offer me the lowest possible fare. If i go by train, i go by Eurostar or i stay at home. They have no competition and no desire to reduce fares other than by regulation, which in turn leads to bloated running and poor management. Rail companies should have to share franchises imo.

They'll have competition when DB start running from St Pancras :D

My understanding is that DB will be running three trains per day to Germanshire and Dutchshire splitting at Brussels. They'll probably undercut Eurostar on fares which will cause a lot of Eurostar passengers for Brussels to desert to DB. I don't think Eurostar will be that bothered, I get the impression that they're really more interested in the Paris and beyond route(s) which is probably why they've bought/ordered a new set of trains based on the ICE model.
