This is a real long shot but I note from my Adrian Mole type diary of the time (I was 15) that I caught the 09.00 from Kings Cross to York and returned on the 16.23.
This was before I started noting down engine numbers but I remember clearly that both trains were hauled by Deltics
If anyone out there has any knowledge of which locomotives were involved I would dearly love to know. Thanks in anticipation.

I have checked Napier Chronicles and unfortunately on the date you mention there are no records for the trains you travelled on. However you were probably lucky to get two Deltics that day because 9 were out of service (1/2/10/11/14/15/16/19/21).
In addition 55006 and 55008 were working the 0730 Leeds-KX and 1630 KX-Newcastle. 55013 and 55018 would have started their days from Edinburgh after working overnight from KX so could have been candidates for your return working. 55004 worked 2015 KX-Edinburgh that day so would be an unlikely candidate for your trains. That leaves 3/5/7/9/12/17/20/22 as other candidates. Do you have any spotting notes from that date that may narrow this down?

Many thanks especially to Sultan1056 for a very comprehensive reply! Sadly no it was before I started jotting down numbers but at least you have narrowed the possible locos down. I remember vividly however that the northbound loco had an impressively large nameplate with a lot of text on it and out of the possibilities you have suggested only one fits the bill namely 55 005 The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire

Is the Chronicles of Napier website any help for this gen by any chance?

Thanks Western Lancer
I did wonder if any recollection of individual features like nameplate might be a idea. Sounds like you have a good chance of having got an idea of a distinct possibility.

Will be interesting if your query pulls up more info.

As a result of reading this thread I have been looking at Napier-chronicles and I find that I had about a dozen Deltic moves back in the day that are not recorded. Is the site still active so that I can submit these details?

I’m the same age I think, born 1/10/61, and had fun with Deltics around the time you mention.
York to Newcastle and Edinburgh, then camping overnight in Berwick next to the ECML, and then York to King’s Cross in the last days.
Nothing to add to help you, though, sorry.
