I passed the DRB a couple of times in Damems loop last Sunday while sampling the Black 5. The first time, there was only a single passenger on board, but on the second it was full. The sound of its horn always makes me smile.

The KWVR really does need to sort out it's timetabling however. When I booked my accommodation in early October, the KWVR website was showing it running the green timetable that weekend, which I printed out. A week or so before, I double checked, and found that it was still running a green timetable - except it was a different green timetable! Apparently there have been three different green timetables? G1, G2 and G3.

Then when I turned up, the timetable poster showed that it was running the cream timetable instead that Saturday! However, the cream timetable looked suspiciously like the green timetable that I had printed out, and the green timetable on the poster was yet another different green timetable!

So I asked at the booking office which timetable was in operation. The clerk confirmed that it was indeed the cream timetable, only for the station master to come out and find me on the platform to tell me that was a mistake, and they were in fact running the green timetable. That was good news for me, as it meant more trips for the DRB. However, while I was waiting on the DRB I took the opportunity to check with the driver. Good job I did, as he told me that no, they weren't running the green timetable, and this was the DRB's last trip.

Having multiple versions of the same coloured timetable is a recipe for confusion. Even the staff were confused.

There's 6 versions of Blue on the website:
B1 to 3 are Sunday versions. B1 is 1 steam and 1 diesel, B2 is shortened version of that and B3 is 2 steam version of B1.
B4 was used on Good Friday and Easter Monday and appears to be similar to B1.
B5 and 6 are the Saturday version with an extra round trip in the morning. B5 is 1 steam and 1 diesel while B6 is diesel and steam ie the order is swapped.

The cream service is the current green but the diesel only does two round trips in the morning. Thus in the afternoon it's just only steam hauled set on Cream.

Yeah and I only look at the timetables in HOPS so I wouldn't have ever noticed green. I'm not public facing though so doesn't affect me in that regard but no wonder some of my colleagues were confused.

I think from what I've heard they will be even more standardised next year. After march. But will wait and see.

Yes, there has been a timetable change this winter, standardising the slightly later morning departure times (which were initially introduced to allow works trains to run) .

The initial change to the green timetable that I noticed was that they changed some of the afternoon train times by about 10 minutes. The latest green timetable has both the dmu/drb and steam train both running all day, whereas the old green timetable (now the cream timetable) has the dmu/drb doing just a couple of morning trips, leaving only the steam train running after lunch.

I suspect that they felt there was sufficient business to run extra dmu/drb services. But why they added them to the existing green timetable, and then produced a new cream timetable (the same as the old green timetable) for the days when the extra services aren't running, baffles me. Why not just produce a new coloured timetable for the days the extra trains are running?

However, I thought it was bad enough having 3 different versions of the green timetable. But 6 different versions of the blue timetable?!

There are only 2 in the current timetable period, and the variation concerns the last round trip which doesn't run in the depths of winter. There are more when a full 2-train service runs on Saturdays.

Looking at the website, it looks like on the 29th March they are running one version of the blue timetable, but the day after they are running a different version of the blue timetable. Why not just use different colours?

However there is currently work underway to significantly simplify timetables from 28th March 2026 onwards in to 3 core timetables. This should ensure every single "normal" operating day starts at the same time. Finishing time will only vary by day of week or time of year - i.e. Saturdays will start and finish at the same times all year, midweek will start and finish at the same times all year, and Sundays will always start at the same time, but will finish at the same time as Saturdays for most of the year, but will finish earlier in the winter.

There will, however, always be different versions of the "two trains all day timetable" to account for Steam + DMU, Steam + Diesel Loco or Steam + Steam. As far as the public is concerned however they SHOULD be exactly the same.

There aren't any as yet, just two major bridge rebuilds in 5 years .

They only have a handful of working locomotives that can handle heavy trains, the Standard 4 being one. It’s one of the better sounding and more impressive locos on the railway I think.

I stopped for five minutes at Oakworth earlier and watched the DMU come by. What a brilliant job they've done with it. Damp morning, wet platforms, lights on in the unit, condensation on the windows.....so evocative of a time gone by
