Konigswinter + Rhineland Palatinate

Hi All,

I'm staying in Konigswinter 24-26 March, and on the 25th I want to go and explore Rhineland Palatinate. With that in mind, please can anyone advise me of the following:

1. Do I get a return from Konigswinter to Bad Honnef or Unkel to go with my day ticket for Rhineland Palatinate?
2. What is the best place to find online train timetables for the state that will be valid with this ticket? (I understand I can't use it on InterCity).
3. I'm trying to find a detailed ticket validity area map for the state (and failing) can anyone help?
4. Are there any steam / preserved lines that will be open midweek in March along the way in Rhineland Palatinate?

1. I think you mean if you're allowed to use the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket to Konigswinter, right? http://www.bahn.de/regional/view/md...icket_und_saarland-ticket_geltungsbereich.pdf says that you can only take the trains on the other side of the Rhine up to Bonn
2. You can use the DB Journey Planner (tick 'nur Nahverkehr') or the journey planner of Der Takt (http://fahrplanauskunft.vrn.de/der_takt/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=de). There are also route timetables at http://www.der-takt.de/service/fahrplanmedien.html ('Streckenfahrpläne')

The adjacent states have their own chapter to look on which routes the ticket is usable.
4. The Brohltalbahn runs on March 8th and 22nd (diesel): http://brohltalbahn.de/ , Kuckucksbähnle doesn't run in March

For reasons I cannot fathom, DB seems to make it very difficult to find a map of the validity area for the RP Ticket. However, there is one in this brochure: http://www.der-takt.de/uploads/tx_dbartikel/KlasseFahrt.pdf
Valid on all lines shown in blue. The limits of validity are marked with a brown dot. You would also need a ticket to Unkel.

While you're in Königswinter, you might also consider the Drachenfelsbahn, an elderly rack tramway which ascends the Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock). Spectacular views from the top. In March it runs every 30 mins 10.00-18.00. Easiest access is by no. 66 tram to Bad Honnef.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies, the map in the PDF is especially useful. It's a shame that nothing heritage wise will be open, but never mind. I have been on the Drachenfels three times now, and I'm not ruling out going on it again, especially if its a nice day :)

Chances of anything midweek on preserved lines in mainland Europe even in high season are pretty remote. Offhand in Germany I can only think of the Sauschwaenzlebahn in the Black Forest and even that isn't daily. Any others?

Every ticketmachine on the platform has an option to find out about all traintravel in Germany and even outside Germany. The Brohltalbahn operates on March 22, 2015. So a few days to early for you. Forget steam so early in the season/year.

If you want to explore than i would do at least: Koenigswinter - Koblenz - Trier - Saarbruecken - Mannheim - Mainz - Koblenz - Koenigswinter. Ticket in during weekdays only valid after 9 o'clock.

So:
Koenigswinter 9.20 - Koblenz 10.13
Koblenz 11.06 - Mannheim 15.14 (via Trier and Saarbruecken)
Mannheim 15.44 - Mainz 17.07
Mainz 17.36 - Koblenz 19.08
Koblenz 19.18 - Koenigswinter 20.08

The last train to arrive from Koblenz to arrive in Koenigswinter is at 22.08; so along the way to have only 2 hours to do something extra. Except from Neustadt an der Weinstraße till Bingen you will only ride between hills. The price for the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket is 24 euro; and 4 euro for every extra person (5 persons maximum).

Don't forget that there's a ferry from Königswinter that will get you across the Rhein to within walking distance (it took me 10 minutes) of Bonn-Mehlem. It was 1.20€ single when I used it last Autumn and I seem to recall it ran well into the evening.

This is a question back to you Stu. I travel to Koeln on a regular basis and often find myself with half a day free to wander around. I have spotted Koenigswinter as a possible place to visit. What are the attractions? I just like to look around nice places and nice situations, so don't need any special attractions.

I don't think you do ;) For Rolandseck-Bonn, look at section 4, Nordrhein-Westfalen. Also, RP Ticket is valid Unkel-Neuwied. It's included within DB Regio, but not stated separately.

Das Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket gilt auf der gesamten Strecke zwischen Bonn und Koblenz.

The answer has arrived and it is a yes for Bonn - Koblenz with the RP Ticket.

Hello mate, I found Konigswinter by accident some years ago. I was staying in Cologne for a week and decided to have a day in Bonn, however I found it to be a bit dull so went down to the river to see if I could get a ride back to Cologne. The first boat was going in the other direction to Konigswinter, so I just went with it. The town is small and very charming with a pedestrianised centre. It is actually twinned with Cleethorpes and has an English post box and phone box outside of the town hall. Freight tears through the station frequently, and I enjoy filming it, the river traffic is interesting, but best of all is the Drachenfels mountain railway. An electric rack and pin system that rises the Drachenfels peak and gives excellent views all around.

With a transfer of only 3 minutes with the last train i do not know whether it is worth the risk. From Bonn in the direction of Bad Honnef; it is line 66 and the price is Preisstufe 2b [CityPlusTicket (Köln oder Bonn)] 3.80 euro.
