BBC News - Weak password allowed hackers to sink a 158-year-old company - BBC News
One password is believed to have been all it took for a ransomware gang to destroy a 158-year-old company and put 700 people out of work.

KNP - a Northamptonshire transport company - is just one of tens of thousands of UK businesses that have been hit by such attacks.

In 2023, KNP was running 500 lorries – most under the brand name Knights of Old.

The company said its IT complied with industry standards and it had taken out insurance against cyber-attack.

I had wondered why I hadn't seen any for a while!

In summary - a single person with access to the entire system wasn't required to have a second factor authorisation to log on?!

...and it seems they didn't have a back up of their data, held independently of their system, either?!?!?

That shouldn't bring a company down.

A disaster recovery plan should have been in place and all data should have been backed up off-site, at the very least.

Apart from possbly the detail of the weak password, this is not news. It is the BBC using its news site to advertise upcoming broadcast content (Panorama).

The fall of KNP also took down Nelson Distribution of Belper and Steve Porter Transport of the Isle of Wight. They were the N and P of the group.
