Kissing as a train pulls out

So, I'm watching Outlander and there's a scene in which a lady is departing on a steam-hauled train, leaving her husband behind. The guard gives the right away while he's still standing there talking through the open droplight and then the two of them kiss through said droplight as the train is starting to move.

This happens quite a bit in movies...

Did this sort of thing really happen? Seems dangerous to me.

As I recall (yes, really) the idea was to disengage as the train started to move. I also recall leaning out of the window quite a lot - much worse!

In steam days acceleration from stations was very slow compared to today's trains, especially with heavy expresses. Yes, in theory it was dangerous - maybe even accidents happened once in a blue moon - but as others have said, attitudes were different. Heavens, ten year-old kids used to bunk engine sheds from Bricklayers' Arms to Polmadie. It's a wonder any of us survived, if you think about it.
