Kingston to Dartford, which route?

Single fare finder shows an offpeak fare of £4 for this journey, but by which route? Looking at the map I’m assuming it’s going to be Clapham Junction then overground to Denmark hill?

The stated routes for that fare are either via Elephant & Castle (EPH), or via Clapham North (CPN) & High Street (CLP).

Changing at Clapham Junction (CLR) and Peckham Rye (PMR) would seem to make a lot more sense to me - but as the default route is charged via Zone 1 and you wouldn't pass through any barriers when changing at CLJ & PMR, I don't think you'd be able to take advantage of the 'avoiding Zone 1' fare if you went that way.

I suspect you're therefore forced to take the slower route with an OSI at EPH or CPN & CLP to take advantage of the cheaper 'avoiding Zone 1' fare. Ironically I think you might even be charged the 'avoiding Zone 1' fare if you do an OSI at both EPH and London Bridge (LBG) - despite that involving travel via Zone 1. Perhaps @MikeWh can clarify.

IIRC from previous discussions if pink readers aren’t mentioned in the single fare finder for a particular route then they have no effect.

Use my fare finder and it says it's zones 2-8. Travel via Clapham Junction and Denmark Hill is fine.

On a related note, ‘Some journeys are charged via Zone 1 irrespective of the route taken’ is sometimes displayed when looking up specific fares on TfL’s single fare finder.

One example would be Deptford - New Cross. This is charged as Z1-2 assuming travel via London Bridge. There is no alternative route shown, even though you could travel via Charlton and Lewisham (although most people would just walk it!)

If you reckon you can do it within MJT (which I reckon you probably could), you could do:

Kingston westbound NR round the loop to Richmond;
behind-gateline interchange to District;
District line to Ealing Broadway or Paddington;
behind-gateline interchange to Elizabeth line;
EL eastbound all the way to Abbey Wood;
NR to Dartford

£4, bargain. Takes a while though...

Yes, via Slade Green and Barnehurst.

The other alternative is via Greenwich, DLR to Lewisham, then New Cross, but even that is quite a roundabout route compared to in and out of London Bridge.

If taking the DLR, that may trigger a mixed mode journey, if OP has travelled on NR via zone 1.

I don't understand what you're suggesting here. My response was to the sub question about travelling from New Cross to Deptford. You either go via zone 1 on NR or use the DLR to avoid zone 1. Sadly the system doesn't cater for the latter as there is no fare set.

Ah, sorry about that.
I think the issue here is likely, DfT dictated that noone will go not via zone 1, this situations happen more often on Southeastern area than Southern or Thameslink area which more non zone 1 options are available.

That's not what I see when I look on the fare finder. When I look it up on the fare finder I see a default fare of £4 and then alterative routes "Using National Rail services only via Waterloo East/Waterloo (or Victoria and Clapham Junction)" and "Travelling on National Rail and London Underground in Zone 1 changing at Blackfriars, Cannon Street, Charing Cross, London Bridge, Victoria, Waterloo or Waterloo East"
