Kingston disruption - Sat 11th Jan

Anyone know what's happening at Kingston? We're stuck outside Norbiton and the on train announcements aren't very audible. Nothing in the National Rail website yet.

On twitter now, points problem but we're on the move and I think the guard has said it's fixed, still difficult to hear.

Unfortunately the PA system on Class 455 trains is not loud enough if done from a Cab, often the Guard will not hear himself so it's difficult to judge how loud to speak through it.

Points failure according to company mobile, points are having to be manually wound into position. Trains are also be talked past two signals, no eta when it may be rectified.

I was on an 8-car 450 towards Windsor that got held just before Kingston for a few minutes, we were around 19 minutes late at Norbiton (same at departure from Waterloo) but around 26 at Kingston! Also got held for a couple of minutes near the depot at Strawberry Hill, but I think that was waiting for a train to pass. What I didn't expect though was front 4 coaches only at New Malden, Norbiton and Hampton Wick, and no auto announcements (service was for Windsor via Wimbledon and Twickenham, doesn't appear to be a normal service pattern? Not familiar with the normal services around there).

Those 3 stations are SDO in the down direction only because the platforms are not quite long enough (officially that is, if the driver goes as far as possible then they will fit ) and as soon as the guard flicks the SDO switch in the cab the auto announcer will announce in the rear unit about moving forward, if you are already in the front unit then you wont hear the announcement.

Not a good day for problems around there as the Windsor side is closed, it never rains it pours!

That must be why then, as I'm sure 8 car 455 is normal on the line. I know one of the three had work started on platform extensions. And the auto announcement was an error on my part, meant to write DVA . The DVA wasn't programmed and the guard was making manual announcements on the approach to every station. He did incorrectly include Kingston instead of Hampton Wick on one occasion! I was sitting in the second or third coach, where first class is

Ah manual announcements, that changes things a bit but you can still make announcements in individual parts of the train, I used to enjoy sitting in the goldfish bowl in the front unit and make an announcement in the rear unit only, about half the time somebody sat just outside the bowl would say that they hadnt heard the announcement and I would reply "you werent meant to".
