Referring to the area past the ticket gates, has the platform layout 9,10,11 always been the way it is now. I was a frequent visitor to the buffet on the suburban station in the mid-70's and I cannot help thinking that the blank wall on the far side of platform 11 just didn't used to be there.

Referring to the area past the ticket gates, has the platform layout 9,10,11 always been the way it is now. I was a frequent visitor to the buffet on the suburban station in the mid-70's and I cannot help thinking that the blank wall on the far side of platform 11 just didn't used to be there.

Platform 11 was closed and filled in sometime around 1978, then reopened some 10-12 years later. Before the diversion of the suburban services to Moorgate there were several more platforms beyond the wall, including one for trains coming up from what was later known as Kings Cross Midland City/Thameslink via the Hotel Curve.

Highest number of passenger platforms was 15, plus York Road on the way down to the Widened Lines, with four parcels platforms beyond the Hotel Curve. There also used to be a servicing point (Bottom Shed) on the west side of the station throat. It must have been awkward to get to the suburban platforms, since the flyover was only ever used for goods up until the rebuild.
