Hello, It's been awhile since i've been on and i just want to ask.

How long would it take to get from the old King Cross Goods Yard to Leeds by goods train in 1959 in a snow storm.

The reason why im asking is because I'm helping a friend of mine write a mystery story about three robbers who stole £10,000 worth of gold and money from the bank of England, and so far we are up to the bit where they make there escape by hiding in the brake van of a Leeds bound goods train.

Now we haven't stated what class of engine it is, although we're going to chose either a 9F of a class 37.

So how long would it take by goods train to get to Leeds from Kings Cross Goods Yard.

Thanks
Daniel~

the first class 37 wasn't delivered until November 1960 - as for timings what sort of goods train are you looking at?

Well were going to use the C Class Goods train that only ran between Leeds and Carlisle as far as i know or the Condor but after some research that ran to London's Hendon sheds

So we're now thinking of a typical north bound goods, so many fitted and unfitted goods wagons like 20t lowmacs, 12t vans and some conflat A's

Hours if not days. Pushed out of the way of everything awaiting paths through Welwyn North, Grantham, etc.

Add snow chaos and it's possibly still en route!

Gerry Fiennes tells of the fitted freight 266 Down with an A4 driven by Bill Hoole catching up the Talisman, though that was going to Edinburgh not Leeds. Admittedly not in fog or falling snow.

A lot would depend on the type of freight. If it was fully (brake) fitted, it would most probably be worked by a V2 2-6-2, or maybe a Class 9F 2-10-0, and although slower than passenger services, it would be relatively quick.

Unfitted (no through brake) freights would be very slow, by-passed in almost every loop, and probably change locos at New England (Peterborough) and/or Doncaster. Motive power might be (for example) a Class 02 ( or WD) 2-8-0, or for less heavy trains, a K3 2-6-0 or B1 4-6-0. By 1959, I think there were also some of diesel classes 24, 26, 30, 40 (as they became) at the south end of ECML - although drivers at the Doncaster / Leeds end might not be trained on all these classes.
