King Charles III notes not accepted at TVMs

I've just been past the TVM at Crayford and noticed a sticker advising the above. Is this an isolated incident or widespread? It has been known that new notes would be issued for ages and I'm sure TfL have ensured their machines are all capable, so is this someone dropping a ball at TOCs?

Awful lot of machines to get round, some of them can't all be updated remotely and require hardware changes to the validators. Even where they can be remotely updated, there's a fair few that are still relying on unreliable GPRS connections or not polling correctly/reliably meaning the update simply isn't received.

I wonder if "I only got Charles notes and the station was unstaffed " will be a valid excuse to board without a ticket like you can at the moment if its only card accepted

I went to a local branch of my bank during the week and drew out "X" number of £20 notes. I always do a double check and put them all the same way round in the special concertinad money note section of my wallet, when I saw one had the image of King Charles III on it. I took it to a supervisor who was surprised and was not aware that any of the new notes had been installed in the ATM.

I am just an old fogey of 79 who sees no reason not to carry currency notes, as they weigh next to nothing.

While that may be true, the Bank of England Press Release about the new notes was issued in December 2022, some eighteen months before they were actually issued - a delay to give the note handling machine industry issue time to get their act together and update their machines - how much more time do they need?

Yeah, saw one around three weeks ago. Clearly in circulation by then.

It is ridiculous when you consider that they had so much advance warning of these new banknotes. They should have been accepting them in their TVMs from day one. Lets hope all of the RPIs have been briefed on this issue.

We had the same exact issue with the new £1 coin in March 2016 and the new £5 note in September 2016 and the new £10 note in September 2017 which all took ages to be accepted. Some of the TOCs took over two years up until early 2019 to get all of their TVMs updated and accepting them. It is a joke how long they take.

All of our remaining Permit To Travel machines still do not accept the new 5p and 10p coins issued from 2008 onwards. They still only accept the old 5p and 10p coins issued up until 2007 on these machines. So over a decade later and they have still not updated them.

Merseyrail are nothing if not consistent- on arriving at Lime Street the other week, I noticed a sticker on the ticket machine saying “this machine does not accept King Charles banknotes”, which would be a minor inconvenience except that my very first Charles III £5 came from the ticket office at Birkenhead North.

Flowbird TVMs are all updated as far as I know so you're out of luck there

The Queen died nearly 2 years ago (8 Sep 2022)

Bank of England held back the new notes for 18 months from when they announced them in December 2022 to allow more than enough time for every machine to be updated.

I don't buy it that no one has been around to check each machine has been updated correctly for over 500 days. But apparently they have found time to print and go around putting stickers on. Does that really sound likely.

Different portrait. The strange thing is that I don’t remember this being an issue when the reverse images were changed, so I suspect there have been changes to the security features at the same time. Unsurprisingly the bank is not going make a great song and dance about those. Changing of features and images is one way of putting forgers on the back foot.

They absolutely did. The last issue of Queen Elizabeth bank notes were polymer ones which were fundamentally different to the previous paper series of notes.

Hopefully the courts will accept the King's notes when the TOCs prosecute their own customers for holding the wrong type of banknotes
