Kilnhurst Central railway station.

Have any of the website members any memories of this station and the traffic that passed through it. I think it was on the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway line from Sheffield Victoria to Doncaster, via Mexborough.

Been closed since February 1968. Was indeed on the Sheffield Victoria to Doncaster line, between Parkgate and Aldwarke, and (a mile or so, South of) Swinton Central. An online search will find a small number of pics of the station, some of which, post closure, show the old station looking in a rather sorry condition. Not sure that the station has its own listing on the Disused Stations website. Believe there was a broadly hourly daytime passenger service between Sheffield and Doncaster in 1967, the year before closure. It did previously see local freight traffic, but this ceased in or around 1964. The station did see some further passenger use in June 1968, when the "South Yorkshire Times and Mexborough & Swinton Times" reports that over 200 members of Kilnhurst Working Men's Club and their children left Kilnhurst Central Station on a Sunday for their annual outing to Cleethorpes. In previous years, Skegness had been another destination for them.

Neither of the Kilnhurst stations are on the Disused Stations website. And there's nothing on the Geograph website either.

Have any of the website members any memories of this station and the traffic that passed through it.

I don't have any memories, but I have done research on the Sheffield area in the modernisation Plan/Beeching era.

Believe there was a broadly hourly daytime passenger service between Sheffield and Doncaster in 1967, the year before closure.

This is unrepresentative of most of Kilnhurst Central history, only applying after the 1965 Aldwarke junction remodelling and the concentration of most services on Sheffield Midland. Prior to that Kilnhurst Central would be served by trains running to/from Sheffield Victoria, but trains going to/from Sheffield Midland would go via Kilnhurst West.

The York/Newcastle-Bournemouth would have passed through without stopping until the Great Central closed in 1966.

It did previously see local freight traffic, but this ceased in or around 1964.

There were still lots of trip workings to and from local collieries, working off Mexborough and then Wath. Until 1964 there were also fast fitted freights between Dringhouses and Woodford Halse via the Great Central.

There's an undated photo of Kilnhurst with a passenger train, formed of what looks like 4/6 wheel vehicles heading away from camera and a freight train approaching. I would guess 1890s/1900's? in 'Yesterday's Yorkshire Series no. 1 - South Yorkshire Railway Stations - on old picture postcards', A5 size booklet, 36 pages, by Norman Ellis. Published 1994 by Reflections of a Bygone Age, Keyworth, Nottingham. ISBN 0 946245 88 6.

There are a couple of copies (the blue covered book) on ebay at present, as is a more comprehensive volume by Peter Tuffrey, but I don't have that one so can't comment on its contents.
