KeyGo ending short question

Hi,

does anyone know how GTR’s KeyGo system would handle the following situation:

Tap in at station A, tap out at station B.
Then for a return journey tap in at station C and tap out at station A.

The stations are on a line one after another in the following way.:

—A—B—C—

I know I could buy an A-C return paper/e-ticket but I find this quite inconvenient. Would KeyGo charge me an A-C return fare or two single fares?

GTR pride themselves in advertising that keyGo supports breaking a journey etc etc, but I doubt that their system would be able to put these two journeys together and only charge you for a return from A to C.

However, since nobody seems to have an answer for that, you could try calling them about it.

I've done this successfully before with Biggleswade/Sandy and got a return to the furthest one. If you do end up getting singles speak to customer support and they should sort it out.

Likewise, I've done journeys like this numerous times and always been charged to correct A-C fare.

My experience is that you will be charged for an A to C return fare.

Note though, that if A - B is significantly cheaper than A - C such that single from C - B plus return A - B is cheaper overall you will need to tap out and tap back in at B on the return, to stop KeyGo charging an A - C return fare. (There are certain fares to Finsbury Park where this applies when compared to those to London Terminals/Thameslink).

Yes, keyGo isn't going to do split ticketing for you unless required to due to a not-permitted route being taken.

...or sometimes it will just charge you for a very short hop single for a day's worth of travel across the network!

Yeah, if you're splitting the fare then that is much easier with paper or e-tickets than with PAYG. From which it follows, naturally, that making PAYG the most economical and, therefore, the default way of paying is not a bad move if you want to discourage splitting the fare.
