Key card in Brighton expiring and paper forms

When my key card for the Brighton buses stopped working after about two years of occasional use, the person issuing a new one had to fill out a paper form. I was surprised. I would have thought it would all be computerised.l these days.

He also had to fill our stuff on the computer as well and it involved putring the card on and off the reader several times. Took about 7 minutes to complete.

Apparently they have been having cards expire for no known reason. My card had four day passes remaining. I was told to wait two minutes and then use the new card. It worked flawlessly this time. Hopefully it won't happen again any time soon.

Interestingly I ran from the bus area outside Brighton station to the one stop shop in less time than it took the number 7 to get there! It passed me on route but then I overtook it again. That's traffic and traffic lights for you.

That's such a coincidence you write this! I had the same problem on Monday. I had two City Savers on there and whilst I had gone on about six or seven buses I went on the 12 from Paston Place to North Street and it declined. I then had to go to the One Stop shop on North Street to get it sorted and apparently it was 'hot listed'.

ITSO smartcards are issued with an ultimate expiry date so they can be printed.

The ones I am aware of are exactly 5 years after the date of printing. Someone with better understanding of the ITSO schema can only know why as it is beyond me

That's such a coincidence you write this! I had the same problem on Monday. The company was reporting GPS issues on Monday - maybe it's related in some way?

My card isn't 5 years old but your point is interesting, as I wasn't aware of that. I'd hope my card wasn't designed to only last two years. Some how I doubt it as the person in the ticket shop didn't know why it had stopped working.

The whole card expiry date is actually optional, my Stagecoach issued one doesn't have it set. However the auto-renewing ticket on it is set for 5 years and a day after it's start date.
