Ooh, I managed to score 2564 (by less than 36 hours) before you Keith  I'm honoured that I got a mention in your trip report, sure made me smile and the highlight of my day!

18 winners already? The new 700s will probably dry up soon, which will make it challenging I'm sure! As for the 92 stock, you'd be mortified at my LU needs as a whole...

Tech, many congratulations to you in scoring 2564 before me, even if it was a mere 36 hours ahead of my lucky stroke. And I'm pleased that I made your day with a namedrop in the middle of my write-up. You'll be pleased to hear that 700010 has since become dud for "sittage".

I don't anticipate any aridity on the 700 front as I'm still short of quite a few FLUs and with ever more diagrams for RLUs coming in, although I suspect a suspension in hostilities on that front over the festive season, I'm sure that I'll be able to keep on top of them.

I'd just like to get the last two 1992ts out of the way, if only to say that it'll be the first time ever that I've cleared all operational underground stock. I do have a cunning plan though .... But knowing my luck, 21381+21382 will enter traffic the day before I get those last two 1992ts.

And no, I would not be mortified at your LU needs as you'd be equally mortified at my non-London light rail needs - let's just say that I still need over 150 operational light rail vehicles. I'm hoping that by the end of 2017, that's more like under 50.

It's all looking good for the December challenge.
I've no London trips for a while now, but the next time I'm in the area I hope to join the "had 2564" club :)

I suspect Keith might be spotted sitting at somewhere like Leyton or Leytonstone keeping his eye out on Central Line movements at an above ground station which sees all the services and shouldn't be as busy as say Stratford.

Can't believe you've got so much scored already, and we've still 2 weeks to go yet!

My light rail needs are still sat at 111 believe it or not. 31 of which are on SPT Subway mind, so you can imagine I'll be going after them a LOT next month. 3 of that total is on Midland Metro too, which irritates me no end.

My focus has shifted somewhat to heavy rail for the time being however. That's not to say I won't do light rail when the chance comes up, Goodness knows how long it's been since my last serious Metrolink session, but my NREA needs filling!

Getting to the halfway point in December, I find that the challenge is becoming all too easy and Friday the 16th proves that yet again. 1O10 turns up with unrequired 700005 but I still take it and again decide to ride my luck at Herne Hill. I did not get a good look at 1V83 but thought that it looked like a dud. The South Eastern side of the house was turning up silly things like pairs of Met-Camm built 465s which are no good to man nor beast but my attention is suddenly drawn to 2V12.

I initially had to do a double take as 700015 rolled in as I did not know it was even in traffic let alone the presumed dud that I had obviously got totally wrong on 1V83. Once I had calmed down and returned to planet normal, I clambered aboard the already wedged service – there was no way that I was letting December winner number 22 get away from me! No door failures or anything like that and 12 minutes later, I found myself at Blackfriars so for the first time in several days I trundled down to the District line and boarded 21341+21342 for the final leg of the morning commute.

The weekend did not provide any chance for more winners as my time was split between tidying the house for Christmas guests, the weekly blag on the supermarket and a visit to a secondhand book dealer in Harrow with my son to see what goodies were available. We came back loaded so definitely no chance for bashing! (And a very public “Thank you” to son for his assistance).

Monday morning (the 19th) dawns and by now I am feeling the effects of the weekend, especially as from nowhere, I seem to have a heavy cold. The morning commute throws up 700023 which I take as far as Herne Hill as there will hopefully have been a weekend shuffle of units on the Victoria – Orpington circuit. The first Victoria-bound train throws up a pair of duds (not even a mileage need) so I chance the second pair and “Yes, Sir! We have a winner”.465929 was dud but it’s partner most certainly was not so with 465184+465929 going into my notebook, I manage to clock up winner number 23 for the month. Will I make 31 before the day when we pay homage to the Man in Red?

The rest of the day’s travels do not provide anything of note with the homeward journey being the usual diet of SWT 455s and Thameslink 319s. What will the rest of the week offer up?

There's few options where one can deckchair in comfort for the Central Line but there's a nice little bench at Stratford at the country end of platform 5/6 although I should imagine that there are also strategically placed benches at Leytonstone and possibly Leyton that might be suitable.

I recall Leyton has a nice handy bench on the eastbound platform which is either 3 or 4 cars down the platform. Not familiar with the Stratford one, but then I've never needed to use it.

Just like that, I want to head to London again asap!

Nicely done on the surprise winner 700 Keith, and you're so close already it's unreal. Might be a bit more challenging to do next December mind!

KJ making the December challenge looking easy again. I could probably do the lot with winners for everything in a single day and about 2 hrs on the tube, such are my requirements in the capital. But a guy who's book has probably more red pens in his book as I have sights, is phenomenal.

Congrats on the latest red pens Mr KJ. I haven't even got a 700 for sight that I could I'D.

It’s now Tuesday and for the second time this week 700023 is my chariot out of St Helier. 1V83 is dud so no need to worry about that but still I bail at Herne Hill in case the 465 Gods offer up something to me. My spirits are lifted when I see required 465001 heading out of town – perhaps I can intercept that later in the day? But a swift check of the diagrams reveals that it retreats to the warmth of some sidings between the peaks so there’s not too much hope for me tracking that one down. The first two Victoria trains are composed of Mett-Camm builds and the third yields 465020+466039 – at least 465020 is a low mileage jobbie. 21347+21348 complete the trek to the factory.

The day passes quickly and before I know it, it’s going home time! There was a need to get home fairly swiftly as there was lots to do so I went directly to Waterloo with the option of about three or four trains to connect with something up the bank to St Helier. The first of the available trains was formed of a pair of Vossloh-tractioned 455. While one was familiar to me as having been retractioned, I was uncertain about the second. I boarded 5705+5727 for the run out to Wimbledon and followed up with 319008+319446 to St Helier. It was only when I got home, was I able to check and without really trying I now have winner number 24 in the bag so 5727, step forward and take a congratulatory bow!

Leaving home on Wednesday, it was a trifle damp on the walk to St Helier and a new 700 for me on 1O10 appears, 700015, but it’s not a winner as the eagle-eyed amongst you will recall that it was 700015 which took me by surprise on Friday 16th at Herne Hill. At least, I’d clear it for 10 miles now. I went again for the Herne Hill move and all I could get out of that was low mileage 465170+465192 with 465170 staggering over the 10 mile “bar”. “Ah well, another fully paid up member of the Ten Mile Club”. 21551+21552 completed an otherwise uneventful trip into work from Victoria.

After work, I had about an hour and a half to kill before meeting my wife and some of our friends for an evening out so how did I occupy that void? 21525+21526 took me east from work to Tower Hill for a short walk to Fenchurch Street. I had been given to understand that all six of c2c’s 387s had now arrived and were in traffic so I was pleasantly surprised when the stock for the 17:16 departure rolled in with 387302+387304+387306. Two winners in one train can’t be bad and with 387302 clearing 10 miles, I was certainly not in complaining mode. Taking the trio to West Ham, I saw the other trio of 387s whizz through running ECS to Fenchurch Street. A few minutes later, 357012+357031+357035 followed up and I boarded as the chase was now on! The 357s were all dud but that was secondary.

Back at Fenchurch Street, I had four minutes to switch over platforms and onto 387301+387303+387305 on the 17:43 departure. Another winner in the bag (387305) and that took me up to 27 winners for December and also the 387/3 sub-class cleared. I wanted to go to Barking to get some mileage on 305 and clear the other two for 10 miles but time was not on my side so I had to make do with a Bus Stop Bash to Limehouse. I missed the +0 connection back to Fenchurch Street so I switched to the DLR and arrived on the platform to be greeted by 04+11+13 arriving bound for Bank. That’ll do fine I thought. A swift walk through the tunnels etc. at Bank saw me interchange to Monument station and onto 21489+21490 to South Kensington for 21353+21354 round to High Street Kensington and an on time arrival to meet my wife and our friends. An enjoyable evening followed, made all the better with three more December winners in the bag (now on 27 for the month). At this rate of scoring, I'm seriously hoping that Santa has been able to action my request for a new red pen!

Another good day :)

Maybe another trip to Paddington or Victoria for extra 387s today or tomorrow?

STOP PRESS! Target achieved courtesy of 700113. I'll fill in the gaps shortly as no doubt you're all wondering how I got from winner number 27 to winner 31.

I am indeed wanting to know how you suddenly got 4 winners!

Many congratulations on clearing the challenge two years in a row, and with relative ease too!

I'm guessing some GWR 387s were involved, maybe even a red one

I admit I bailed from the first 387/3 working at Limehouse to get me safety back to fenchurch Street in time for the 2nd working

The calendar is now telling me it's Thursday and just for a change, 700023 is officiating on 1O10. Passing 1V83 with 700010 means no action necessary on that front so the plan is to bail at Herne Hill and ride my luck with the 465s which to be fair, have looked upon me kindly in recent days. But things were about to change as we rolled into Wimbledon. Sitting in Platform 10B was a nice new shiny tram – I’d already bagged 2564 a while back so could this be 2565? I had to do a double take, followed by a second double take to check and it was definitely 2565 so I was off of 700023 and onto winning 2565 quicker than the average rat up a drain-pipe. The big question was where I go to without disrupting my travel to work plans too much. Mitcham Junction was the obvious answer as I should intercept 2V12. And that’s Tramplink cleared again although I do have some mileage needs (2556 along with new kids on the block 2564 & 2565) so not completely finished in that department.

Leaving winner number 28 behind at Mitcham Junction, I had six minutes before 700010 trundled in to take me in the general direction of work. Even though I had missed the first of the 465 procession at Herne Hill, I still bailed. And what a lucky move that proved to be as within a couple of minutes I was watching a pair of 465s rolling in with a winner in the formation! I eagerly leapt on 465012+465183 for the run into Victoria and noted that was winner number 29. It was left to 21369+21370 to convey me on to my place of work.

I had an afternoon engagement in Croydon – meeting with a couple of friends so I finished work at lunchtime and ignored the logical route to the South London metropolis. Instead I took 21471+21472 to Blackfriars where I had a choice of two Class 700 workings to get me to my destination on time. I did not need to wait for the second as 700115 came in on the first. OK, it’s a bit of a totter around South London but at least winner number 30 was racked up. I almost felt like abandoning the afternoon’s socialisation as I was sure that winner number 30 would come my way but I pressed on with my original plans.

Once the afternoon’s imbibing was over, I made my way back to East Croydon station – the first thing that I saw was a winning 171! Only problem was it was going the wrong way – making a mental note to grab it later on, I set about finding something to occupy the time with. That took all of five minutes when a winning 700 rolled in. Boarding 700113, I knew it was a winner but it took more than a few moments for the fact that it was winner number 31 to sink in (and thus the challenge had been met with great ease) but eventually the euphoria kicked in with the bar immediately reset to 43 winners for December.

Bailing off of 700113 at Blackfriars, I contemplated my next move – I had to get back to Croydon for that 171 but I knew that the next southbound services from Blackfriars were either booked for Electrocarts or should be dud 700s. So I made my way to London Bridge by walking to Southwark tube and 96120+??? Onto London Bridge. The idea was to cover another 171 working and the 700 that runs into the Bridge. I was a bit worried when the 700 working was shown as being an eight-car but need not have been as 700006 came in rather later (I’d seen reports that it was playing with the big boys a few days previously) and with it being a winner I jumped on board for a totally uneventful journey back to East Croydon. That’s 32 winners on the board.

It was about 20 minutes to wait before the 171s were due but the time seemed to pass swiftly – I was pleased that 700006 had showed as the 171s behind were all dud. Then came the moment, 171402+171804+171721 came in. There’s no prizes for guessing which former reformed Scottish unit that I made for! It was with great pleasure that I had at last had a diesel winner in the December Challenge even though the target had already been exceeded. Leaving 171402 and friends behind at London Bridge, I made for the Northern Line where I had a short wait for 51666+51667 to Morden and was indoors not long afterwards.

So, sitting on 33 winners for the month, can I eke another 10 out of the system by New Year’s Eve? Well there’s only three possible days available but I’ll give it a go ….

Excellent news on getting 171402, the two new trams plus some more 700s into the book. The question is can you do 31 outright winners (so excluding the retractioned 465s) ;)

BTW if you get a chance to be out and about tomorrow Keith, it appears the half hourly Gatwick Express services are calling at East Croydon, although at a rough guess I would only imagine there will be 3 sets out, but a chance to grab some 387/2s into your book within the zones :)

Impressive stuff Keith.

I'm in London myself on Thursday and Friday next week, if you're targeting yourself 43 winners for the month, i'll target myself twice that for the two days. I have the advantage of being a Northerner but i've cleared swathes of the fleets down there. Let's see if I meet that target of 86 ;)

Many congratulations Keith, the way you're going the entire 700 class will be cleared for 10 miles before the end of 2017!

Getting to 43 winners is going to be a mighty challenge but not impossible!

Well after this afternoon's antics, I'm on 39 winners. Eight of those are retractioned 465s and there are also three retractioned 455s in he pile so brand new stuff is on 28 so 31 non-retractioned winners is feasible but I am only out for one evening and one day between now and the 31st

Thanks for the headsup. Unfortunately, I am confined to barracks tomorrow preparing for the remainder of the Christmas house guests.

I would have thought that if you are going at it sold, then 86 winners is perfectly achievable, especially if you are bagging tube stock and not worried about doing Bus Stop Bashes.

Tech, you are assuming that all the 700s are delivered and in traffic by then but I'll give it a good go. There's also going to be their red cousins to chase as well. More generally, without new deliveries next year, pickings will be rather thin and reliant on things such as retractioned 455s.

43 is perfectly achievable after today's successes which I'll write up in the next day or two. Quick summary - another six on the board in under three hours. And no 700s amongst that little lot.

I don't do tube stock, so it'd have to be mainline, DLR or Tramlink. I'm looking at doing some c2c moves which should beef up my totals a bit and they're the one fleet in London that I haven't really touched.

DLR will help you boost the numbers as will Tramplink. If c2c are running a Saturday service next week, that probably means that almost everything will be pairs of 357s all day. Cue multiple West Ham to Barking/Limehouse leaps.

I've already checked and it's all 8s with a single 12 car journey. Looks to be a sort of weekday service with a very frequent service in the peaks, minus the 387 diagrams (one becomes a Laindon service and one becomes an all stations to Shoeburyness service).

Might be useful for a shack scratching linear move all the way out to Shoeburyness.

You will get more 387s out of Paddington, hopefully running as far as Maidenhead by next December to aim for ;)

Seems RTT was having a bump, suggesting now that Gatwick Express services are only calling working London bound

I left you all in suspense before Christmas as to my progress for the remainder of December. Friday the 23rd dawned and this was to be my last working day of the year. The day’s commute started as usual on 1O10 and just for a change 700023 was in charge. I’d had enough of the Herne Hill leap so decided to give that a rest and I was not in for mileage accumulation with 700023. Instead I bailed at Wimbledon to see what South West Trains could offer me as I seemed to lose track of retractioned 455s, so much so that I had not realised that much earlier in December, I had scored a winner without really knowing it – on the 8th I had managed finally to clear 5913 for 100 miles but it was only when formally recording my moves on The Haulage Book did I realise that its partner for the day, 5740 was a retraction requirement. This effectively put me on 34 winners thus far in December.

Fast forward back to my final working day of the year and 5716+5861 had the honour of conveying me to Clapham Junction where I decided to deckchair it for a while with the aim of clocking retractioned 455s In the 20 or so minutes that I was in deckchair mode, I clocked no less than eight retractioned units and two of these were “news” to me. I wondered whether later in the day I could arrange to run into at least one of them. 5731+5901 took me on to Waterloo and it was a bus jobbie that completed the morning commute.

The last working day before Christmas is traditionally an early finish and it was soon after 11:00 that my boss, who was working at home, rang me to say that he was logging off shortly and was wondering when I’d be doing the same. I took that to mean that is was OK to finish whenever I wanted – I’d already arranged to meet a friend for a swift dose of adult beverage at about 12:00 so I went to lunch and did not come back! Instead, once a couple of glasses of adult beverage had been consumed, I made for the underground and 1996ts 96049 took me to London Bridge. I wanted another look at the Uckfield line in case any of my embarrassingly high number of required 171s were out. The first departure was no goods with an hour to kill before the next, it was time for some fill-in moves. First up was 465020+465181 bound for Charing Cross – 465020 was just shy of 10 miles and had reached the necessary target by Charing Cross while 465181 was winner number 35 from December. 376003+376009 were waiting to convey me back to London Bridge and that journey saw me extract another application form for membership of the Ten Mile Club from my bag with 376003 being the latest recruit.

I had barely a minute’s wait before 376008+376022 appeared bound for Charing Cross – the journey gave me sufficient mileage with 376022 to propose its membership for the Ten Mile Club. I had barely enough time at Charing Cross to swap platforms to board what I thought was a required unit. I was certain that I wanted one of 375603+375909 for mileage but on checking the wants list, all that showed up was 375603 being a long term absentee from The Haulage Book. As we left Charing Cross I espied a winning retractioned 465 and a quick fumble with RTT revealed that it was to follow us out a couple of minutes later. That resulted in a rapid bail at Waterloo East and me switching platforms to await the arrival of 465006+465160. Winner number 36 for December.

Leaving 465006+160 behind at London Bridge, it was time to make my way over to the next Uckfield train which had just arrived. This time, I was in business with a winning two-car 171. There was no question which unit I sat in – it had to be the reformed and reclassified unit in the formation comprising 171201+171721+171804. I sat back for the run down to East Croydon in winner number 37 with the idea of deckchairing it for a while lest any required 700s were to pass by. But it was not long before the deckchair was packed away as the next London-bound service off the Uckfield line turned in a winner - 171401+171402 being the units in question. Eagle eyed readers will have seen that 171402 was scored less than 24 hours previously but 171401 had the hour of becoming December’s 38th winner. Then there was the deafening sound of metal against metal – well in my head at least as “the penny dropped”. I had about half an hour to get to Waterloo for not one but both of the retractioned 455s that I had seen earlier in the day as they were due out of Waterloo on consecutive services. With 171401 joining The Ten Mile Club as well as having the honour of sitting at the winner’s table, I did not dwell long at London Bridge. In fact only long enough to switch platforms and board 465016+465188 for the Bus Stop Bash to Waterloo East.

Walking swiftly over to the mainline side of Waterloo, I had about four minutes to spare before 5734+5851 were due to leave – 5734 became winner number 39 for the month. Knowing that I had another required retractioned 455 immediately behind, I bailed at Clapham Junction where I spent all of three minutes before 5736+5906 rolled in and thus secured winner number 40 for the month. In a time-wasting/mileage accumulation move, I stayed on to Raynes Park where I crossed over the footbridge to join familiar pairing 5731+5901 back to Wimbledon and then the joys of 319428 up the bank to St Helier.

Very productive indeed.
Seems every man and his dog is getting in on those new 171s before me ;)
