Monday 14th December – Solid Gold Easy Action

Having an hour an hour or so to spare after work, there was only one thing to do; see if I could ratchet up the hits and edge closer to achieving the December Challenge. As with all December trips, the title of this little outing has a musical reference – this time it’s one of the tracks from “For All The Cats: The Best of Marc Bolan & T Rex”. Quite appropriate, considering during the course of my travels I passed under the bridge at Queens Ride where Marc Bolan’s car spun out of control on that fateful night on September 16th 1977.

1996ts 96056+96025 took me to Waterloo for the first day of the new timetable and while I had heard rumours of increased 458/5 activity at Waterloo, I did not know exactly what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to see a pair of 458/5s on the 17:15 Slow Hound Loop service, previously this service was the preserve of 2*450. There were also two other pairs of 458/5s in Waterloo, both of which were dud, but this was the first set out so I took dud 458511+458520 out to Clapham Junction. Good move as the next in-bound service contained a required 458/5, 458522. I boarded 458522+458536 and there’s no prizes on offer for which unit I sat in. I opted to leave Waterloo on the same set (458522 +458536) in order to crank up the mileage on 458522. But as we were leaving, I espied another required 458/5 which RTT claimed would follow us. So at Clapham Junction it was a simple case of jump off one pair of 458/5s, wait on the platform for a few minutes and treat myself to a second winner of the evening.

458526 was my target unit and when 458509+458526 rolled in, I naturally made for the required unit. Regular readers will probably recall that I scored 458509 on one of my SWT shack bashes in November but I did not achieve the magic 10 miles with it. At least I had the opportunity to put that right this time! I took the pair to Twickenham where the island platform is certainly useful for interchange on tight connections. By then, 458509 had gained enough brownie points to permit a successful application to the Ten Mile Club although “new kid on the block” 458526 would have to wait a little longer. Disappointingly, the next train back was a dud pair of 458/5s but you can’t have winners all the time. 458533+458535 took me back to Clapham Junction where I had a few minutes to cross the footbridge onto mileage requirement 378208. I stuck with this as far as Clapham High Street where I made the interchange with the Northern Line – i.e. walk to Clapham North and had 51547+51548 south to Morden and thence to home.

“Not bad for about an hour and a half’s work” I mused to myself on the way home, noting that December had already produced 19 winners. Only 12 more to go until the December Challenge is complete. And the Brucie Bonus was clearing another 458/5 for 10 miles. Keep ‘em coming!

December Challenge Winners (19) – 2558, 2559, 2560, 2562, 21477, 21478, 92069, 92099, 92343, 378206, 378216, 378217, 378220, 378223, 378226, 378227, 378231, 458522, 458526

That sounds like a very productive and varied day! Hopefully you will get those last few winners for December!

With the tube sets, do they stay in the same formation all of the time or not (so, for example 92141 could be with 92048, 92424 and 92239 one day but with a completely different 3 the next?)

I did a thread on logging tube stock a few months back - you can find it here.

The 1992ts formations are now completely random but my understanding is that they only swap around either during maintenance or following failures. As others have said, to do the job properly, you'll need to log all for two car sets. With a couple of exceptions, odd numbered cars are always on the ends while evens are in the middle. Those exceptions are a few units mainly in the 923xx series which appear in the middle of a set; these are 92177, 92311 and 92341.

A most productive time there Lord Keith! Congratulations on clewring Tramlink trwck too. I can't comment on the place of Addington, I didn't leqve the tram stop and did the route in the dark!

With the track out of the way, there's just the small question of the remaining shacks. But, My Lords, I have a cunning plan to reduce that number very quickly.

Another excellent read and well done on getting to 19 winners this month already! You're doing rather well it has to be said, and good results indeed for a 90 minute session!

Looking forward as always to the next one, certainly Lord Keith provides an excellent read and just what I needed after today's shift!

Tuesday 15th December – One Way or Another

Carrying on where I left off the previous day, I had not really caught up with how many 458/5s were now in traffic and still showing as “rqd” status on my requirements list – many thanks to WWTownEnth of this parish and his regular updates on the 458/5 fleet. The other thing that I had failed to really grasp until yesterday evening is just how many 458/5s are booked out of Waterloo at my normal commuting time. Where there used to be two or three pairs accessible in my usual evening commute window, the timetable change has made that six!

The musical references for trip titles continue as booked. This time it’s the blonde bombshell, Debbie Harry, and her band Blondie who will be entertaining us tonight. But let’s not digress as there’s bashing to be done. I managed to escape from work on time and was almost distracted by the Jubilee line as 96107 produced, this being one of the few mileage requirements on 1996ts but I resisted the temptation as clearing this for 10 miles would not contribute to the December Challenge. My target again was 458/5s and if there weren’t any, head for the North/East London Lines where surely I could grab a few 378s. I did not have long at Waterloo as I immediately identified a winner about to head around the Hounslow Loop. 458513+458524 were the pairing in question with 458513 being the winning unit so taking my seat in 458513 I set off with no real plan although within minutes I started to formulate one.

Trains were not leaving Waterloo in the correct order as inbound ECS movements seemed to be rather late and as a result my train picked up a healthy load. The first part of my plan involved bailing at Putney to cover an inbound Windsor working which showed with double dud 458511+458520 but as I needed to be back at Clapham Junction, I hopped on board. A few minutes later saw me bail at the Junction and while both the East and West London Lines were trying to lure me away with winning 378s, I had now got the 458/5 bit between my teeth so flagged both of the 378s and instead transferred to the down Windsor platforms. Within minutes I was rewarded for resisting temptation as another winning 458/5 put in an appearance, 458515 being the unit in question. But it was a double whammy as tagging along for the ride was 458526, a winner from the previous evening, which was still needed for the 10 mile barrier. 458515+458526 took me as far as Kew Bridge where I met 458513+458524 coming back from their visit to Hounslow. This gave me the opportunity to knock up the mileage with 458513 and clear it for 10 miles.

At Barnes, we ran in parallel with a late-running 10 car 458/5 that had come in off the Richmond line – 458510+458523 were the units in question and one of them was a winner! At each of the stops up to Clapham Junction my train was marginally ahead in departure terms but there was no opportunity to transfer over. That would have to wait until Clapham Junction where I could make use of the island platform to switch trains to 458510+458523 and rake in winner number three of the evening, 458523. Thankfully 458510+458523 was given priority by the signalman from Clapham Junction and we ran through to Waterloo. At Waterloo, the platform staff were making every effort to turn a late arrival into an ontime departure – curiously for 458/5s, the train was destined for Shepperton via Richmond. I stuck with 458510+458523 as far as Clapham Junction. 458523 will have to wait for another day before I rack up the 10 miles with it. I then made moves for home and even though the Southern network was in total disarray, I found a train calling at Balham within a few minutes formed of 377610+377612 where an easy transfer onto the Northern line saw me board 51605+51606 and head towards Morden and home.

As I put the key in the front door, I thought to myself “The December Challenge is going quite nicely with 22 winners on the clock; surely the 31 is achievable. And after what seemed to be months of no new 458/5s, five in two evenings cannot be complained about.”

December Challenge Winners (22) – 2558, 2559, 2560, 2562, 21477, 21478, 92069, 92099, 92343, 378206, 378216, 378217, 378220, 378223, 378226, 378227, 378231, 458513, 458515, 458522, 458523, 458526

Wednesday 16th December – Never Say Never

When I left work this evening, I had no intention of going out cranking tonight. The plan was to wander home as normal, see Mrs KJ before she left for work, have something to eat and once the chores were done, get on with writing up trip reports, updating The Haulage Book and generally having some “me time”. But soon after I arrived at Waterloo, that all changed.

The musical entertainment tonight comes from Triumph, the Canadian hard rock power trio. Their Album, Progressions of Power was almost an anthem amongst a band of West Country based 50 bashers in 1980 with tracks such I Live for the Weekend, I Can Survive, In The Night, Tear The Roof Off and Hard Road. I digress. Today was a working day and after work I made my way to Waterloo courtesy of the Jubilee Line with 96101 providing the traction. Wandering along the concourse, I was presented with a choice of two ten-car 458s but one attracted my attention more than the other (which admittedly had a mileage requirement in its formation). In particular, it was a winning 458512 that caught my eye so that’s three nights in a row that the 17:15 Hounslow Loop service has produced a winner for me. Just before we left, the stock for the following service (Weybridge via the Hounslow Loop) appeared with 458508+458522; 458508 was a winner and 458522 a mileage requirement. I could have done an amateurish move and do the first pair to Vauxhall and wait a few minutes for the second winner. Instead I opted to do a “proper job” with one of the units at least so 458503+458512 were taken to Clapham Junction. I then trekked over the footbridge to the mainline side of the house for 5868+5920 to Wimbledon and onwards home by bus as Thameslink seemed to be in their usual shambolic state.

Mrs KJ left for work, I grabbed something to eat and tidied up. Then the rest of the evening was mine – the result was I went out for an evening bash. First thing to do was up to Morden for 51539+51707 to Balham where I went upstairs and fell into 455827 to Clapham Junction. I then did the reverse move of earlier, i.e. across the footbridge to the Windsor platforms. You can do that so much quicker when the crowds have subsided. I kept checking RTT to see if the jigsaw was still going to fall into place and yes it was still looking good. Within minutes I was on the move on dud 458504+458530 heading out of London. I worked out that there was about a +4 at Barnes which is perfectly doable and all the more comfortable if you are up the front of the trains (which I was).

I joined the homebound commuters and made my way over the bridge – while most we heading for a combination of the car park or the local bus stops, I wanted the up platform. Bang on cue 458508+458522 appeared around the curve from Barnes Bridge. Things were falling into place nicely. I took my seat in the winning 458508 and enjoyed every mile of the journey into Waterloo. I had originally planned to come back out of Waterloo on 458508 to Clapham Junction to clear it for 10 miles but I got a little concerned when the Waterloo platform staff locked up the units as soon as everyone had alighted. However, all became clear very quickly – the sets were about to be split. That only served to confuse the fare-paying punters on the platform even more. 458522 was the first to head off around the Hounslow Loop and as soon as that had left, 458508 was also made ready for a trip around the Hounslow Loop (but travelling in the opposite direction). Having taken my seat, my idea was to go to Clapham Junction, clearing 458508 for 10 miles in the process, and head home from there.

Just before 458508 was about to leave, 458529 and friend arrived in the adjacent platform. “Oooops” I thought to myself “That’s the last running 458/5 that I still need”. I could see that the platform staff were getting ready to split 458529 away from its friend but the doors on our train were closing so no chance of a change of plan. A quick play of RTT revealed that 458529 should be only seven minutes behind me. I contemplated a Vauxhall leap again the second time but instead decided to stick to plan A, i.e. take 458508 to Clapham Junction, as that would see ‘508 cleared for 10 miles. Since it would have been rude to refuse 458529, instead of than turning for home, I waited for what should have been 458529. Things worked out as planned and the winning 458529 duly appeared. So as not to risk getting home too late, I took it the relatively short distance to Putney. Here I knew that I had a +1 onto a bus home (normally, I’d never contemplate doing that journey but it was getting late so extremely unlikely to get caught in traffic). I dashed out of Putney Station and one of Sutton’s finest appeared – PVL281 in case the bus cranks are interested. Those Volvo B7TL-TransBus Presidents, even though they are getting on a bit now (in London terms at least) as they are 02 plates, are much more preferable from my point of view to the totally rancid Optare Olympuses that make up the majority of Sutton’s double deck fleet.

At least the 30 minute plus journey gave me the opportunity to reflect on the evening’s antics. I left work expecting no winners today but had racked up three by the end of the evening with all on my sort of local patch. While obviously another three winners is an excellent contribution to the December Challenge (now on 25 so only six to go), more significant is that I’ve cleared all the 458/5s in traffic and only require the last seven conversions. Admittedly, some 458/5s need attention for the 10 mile barrier but hopefully they will fall now that I can embrace 458/5 traction on the daily commute home.

December Challenge Winners (25) – 2558, 2559, 2560, 2562, 21477, 21478, 92069, 92099, 92343, 378206, 378216, 378217, 378220, 378223, 378226, 378227, 378231, 458508, 458512, 458513, 458515, 458522, 458523, 458526, 458529

Too very good evenings indeed there, well done on getting the last active 458/5, I suspect you'e looking forward to the last 7 being converted!

I do wonder where the last 6 winners will come from, but at lwast it's doable!

A great couple of reads there, Keith! Good to see you're still keeping the winners coming this deep into the off-season. Best of luck with the remainder of the challenge! :D

Saturday 19th December– The Race Is On

When I set myself the December Challenge, I had no idea whether I’d achieve it and losing a day’s bashing at the beginning of the month did not help my confidence. However, with both today and tomorrow (Sunday 20th) available for bashing, I now think it’s more a matter of when I meet the December Challenge rather than if. With 25 winners on the clock, all I had to do in theory was to go and find six 378s and I’d be there but I have never been one for doing anything the easy way!

The music related titles continue and today the entertainment comes courtesy of Suzi Quattro, aka The Detroit Diva. So turn the stereo up and sit back, we’re going armchair bashing (yours truly having already done the real bash !).

Today was to be a day of two halves with bashing sessions either side of a lunch appointment with a former work colleague in Croydon. With that kicking off at 12:00, I was slightly restricted as to what I could do in the morning but it was not too long before I came up with a programme of South London shacks that could receive a visitation before I arrived in Croydon for lunch. Northern Line 1995ts 51616+51718 was the first entry in The Haulage Book for the day as I travelled from Morden to Balham. At Balham I walked upstairs to the Southern station and boarded 455834 which was headed for Sutton, not that I had any desire to go there. In my sights was Thornton Heath which for some inexplicable reason, I had never had any cause to visit. I’d only left home half an hour previously and already had the first shack in the book!

That left me with one Southern shack within Zones 1-5 to get (I still want a decent number in Zone 6) so off to get that one now. 455810 was the first unit out of Thornton Heath and was bound for London Bridge. This was my lowest mileage 455 (along with 455804) and had not even achieved 40 miles so I was quietly pleased to see it. I had a +0 at Tulse Hill onto a Beckenham Junction service but as 455810 was a minute or two down, I had no chance of that so I stayed on to South Bermondsey in order to avoid the fester at Tulse Hill. At South Bermondsey, I had a comfortable +2 onto 455846 on the next Beckenham Junction service which seemed pretty lightly loaded. I alighted at Birkbeck for shack score number two and transferred to the adjacent Tramlink stop which, amazingly was also a score! That must be the worst interchange between National Rail and Tramlink on the network as you have to go out onto the street in order to effect the change.

I only had a couple of minutes at the Birkbeck Tramlink stop to wait before 2545 arrived to take me the short distance to Harrington Road; this being the first of several Bus Stop Bashes that I’d make in the name of shack scratching. A few minutes later, Stadler 2554 appeared to take me to Beckenham Road where 2546 was waiting in the loop outside the stop to take me back to Avenue Road. A swift change of platforms saw me boarding 2538 back to Beckenham Road where 2554 was waiting in the loop for 2538 to clear the platform. Getting on board 2554 for a second time, this time I went to Woodside where evidence of the old BR station was still in evidence. But there was little time to admire the scenery as 2559 rolled in to take me to Arena. Another quick change of platforms (and direction) and I was ready for the arrival of 2555 for the shortish trip to Blackhorse Lane. In well under an hour, I had managed to clear all of the eastern end Tramlink shacks that I needed, leaving just a splattering on the Wimbledon branch. Those will be an easy target as they’re much closer to home.

Stadler 2559 was my way out of Blackhorse Lane to East Croydon. As there was still about half an hour before the lunch appointment, I set about cranking up the Stadler mileage (and looking to see if either of my requirements were about). 2554 “Love Croydon” was the first one out so back to Addiscombe I went where I was able to drop onto 2559 back to East Croydon. I’d not sampled 2558 which was immediately behind since I had it new a few months back so I went for a spin around the Croydon loop. As it was approaching bewitching hour, 2562 was my last ride of the morning for a Bus Stop Bash to George Street. I met will former colleague at the nearest hostelry to George Street – a certain Spoons. As ever The George had a great selection of ales available and I indulged variously in Scarlet Macaw, Shere Drop, Black Troll, Winter Cheer and Dark Star original along with a bargain curry and salted caramel cheesecake. Having put the world to rights along with a few beers and a decent nosh, I left The George feeling sated and what was the first tram to appear? 2562 so I had that around the loop to East Croydon so that I could resume bashing.

Mindful of the December Challenge, I thought that a few new 378s would help boost the totals. 455807 was the first train up to Norwood where I had a little wait before mileage requirement 378146 showed up – I’d seen it heading to West Croydon. I went through to Surrey Quays with 378146, clearing it for 10 miles in the process, and parked myself on my favourite bench so that I could see whether there were any winning 378s about. It wasn’t too long before I saw my last 378/1, 378149, heading towards West Croydon. As there did not seem to be anything else required heading towards Croydon, it was time for a fill in move so that I could meet 378149 on its way back. A conveniently placed low-mileage 378153 was available for a spin to Dalston Junction and as 378153 was still under 10 miles, I returned to Wapping with it, having now got 10 miles on the clock. 378210, also low-mileage, was almost immediately behind and the short run to Surrey Quays helped to boost ‘210’s mileage. I had sufficient time to cross to the Northbound platform before the event of the afternoon; the arrival if my last 378/1. A couple of minutes late and 378149 rolled into Surrey Quays. I boarded and took my place, as I always try to do with five-car 378s, in the 384xx coach. I was missing a couple of East London Line workings but I figured that it would be more profitable if I centred my bashing around the North London Line so I went straight through to Highbury & Islington.

Changing my allegiances to the North London Line, I did a swift Bus Stop Bash to Canonbury on 378216 where I swapped onto mileage requirement 378212 back to Hampstead Heath. ‘212 cleared for 10 miles but I was getting concerned that at 17:30, I had only accrued one winner for the day. Was the December Challenge in peril? Winning 378233 came to my rescue which took me to Willesden Junction where I conveniently dropped onto another winner, 378224, heading back east. I again selected Hampstead Heath as my bailing point although in retrospect, the island platform at Caledonian Road would have been better as I had a reasonable wait for anything required. After about 20 minutes, winner number four of the day, 378219 trundled in. As this was bound for Clapham Junction, I went all the way. The train was fairly busy but when we got to Shepherds Bush, the train was besieged by folk who had been to the nearby retail emporium. Thereafter, it was crush loaded all the way to Clapham Junction. I’d planned on getting the next Southern train to Balham and the Northern Line home but when I saw 378154 on the next South/East London Line service plans soon changes. It would have simply been rude to refuse ‘154 as it needed only micro mileage to clear for 10 miles and a leap to Clapham High Street would more than solve that problem. There were plenty of partygoers on the train and one guy stood out more than others – he was insistent that the train went to Wandsworth Town, even despite several other travellers, and a railway chap as well, telling him that Wandsworth Road was nowhere near Wandsworth Town! Eventually, after several loud phone calls, he must have accepted that he needed to sample five car 458s rather than five-car 378s! Thankfully that little conundrum was resolved before we left.

After alighting at Clapham High Street, I made the short walk (100m or 150m, depending which sign you believe) to Clapham North underground station where 1995ts 51637+51721 took me south to Morden and onwards towards home. I reflected on the day. Not the best for winners but another four were more than welcome and the December Challenge (of an average of one per day in December) was now well and truly in reach with the total for the month sitting on 29. Also another five 378s cleared for 10 miles was a pleasant bi-product but equally important was the fistful of shack scores where another 9 had been raked in. On shacks, all the Tramlink requirements are near to home so that might be a weekday evening bash sometime and all remaining Southern shacks are in Zone 6 so progress there as well. All in all a good day’s bashing punctuated by some good beer and food!

Not so good for winners there but you sure got a lot of shacks! Hopefully you'll manage another two before the 31st!

Just caught up with these again, another great read, it's nearly cigar time on the December Challenge front, you certainly knocked the 458/5's out the park. I reckon you should adjust your sights up to 40;)
Some good tunes involved too, especially my first crush Blondie, she was an absolute stunner in her younger days and ofcourse the imfamous T-Rex, my mother brainwashed me as a kid with T-Rex, The Stones and Dylan.
Looking forward to the next installment Keith.

Sunday 20th December – Beating Around The Bush

This was likely to be the last decent bashing day of the year and looking at Mrs KJ’s roster together with known commitments in the next month or so, it might be the latter part of January before I file anything approaching a lengthy trip report. Therefore, I had better make the most of it, especially as the December Challenge was still not completed. Consequently, all outstanding chores were all completed by late morning so giving me a fair crack of the whip with today’s bashing.

The musical reference in the title refers to AC/DC and a certain track from their 1979 album entitled Highway to Hell – rather appropriate I thought given that I made a couple of visits to The Bush today. While the Aussies strut their stuff in the background, sit back and read about what happened today on my final decent wander of the year.

With the December Challenge almost there, I was rather hoping that winner number 31 of the month, should I get that far, would not be a five-car 378. 1995ts 51631+51632 constituted the first entry in The Haulage Book for the day on a straightforward run up from Morden to Stockwell where I swapped over to the Victoria Line. Only a few seconds to wait for 11081+11082 which seemed to be absolutely rammed with punters and almost all seemed to be headed for the same place as me – Oxford Circus! However, 95% of them made for the exit while I crossed over to the Bakerloo Line. First train up was 3262+3464 with the latter being a mileage requirement so I stayed on past my intended destination to Warwick Avenue where along with clearing 3464 for 10 miles I, embarrassingly, had a shack score. 3239+3467 were the next set south and I took this pair of dud to Marylebone. I had about six minutes to get from the underground platform to my train and I did not want to miss it as I’d either have two hours to wait or I’d need to recast my plans.

Thankfully, I made it onto 160518 working the Gerrards Cross stopper. The train PA system seemed to be in non-stop “warble” mode. “Passengers this…, passengers that…, warble, warble”. Almost everything you could think of bar announcing what colour socks the driver was wearing. This eventually died down after about six or seven minutes when I was able to relax and enjoy the journey up to West Ruislip. Passing through the two limited service Sudbury shacks, I made a mental note that these will need to form part of an after work shack attack sometime in the New Year.

With the national rail shack at West Ruislip suitably scratched, I made the easy transfer to the Central Line – I did not need this particular shack as I scored it when cranking the line many years ago. While I still needed nine individual 1992ts units, I was not going to hang around for a winner as that might take all day! First train out was 92051+92198+92174+92309 which I took to South Ruislip for shack score number three. There was no need to switch over to the National Rail station here as that has been sampled on several occasions. Within a couple of minutes, 92057+92446+92168+92047 appeared to take me back to Ruislip Gardens and yet another shack scratch. The island platforms at the western end of the Central Line are definitely handy for bashing – no traipsing over bridges or through subways – and this definitely helped me get onto 92307+92434+92244+92043 to head eastwards again to Northolt (shack scratch number 5) where there was a train sitting in the reversing siding which would doubtlessly follow the one I had alighted from.

After what seemed an eternity, but in reality was only around three minutes 92001+92436+92126+92301 emerged from the siding and re-entered service after layover. I boarded and went through to North Acton to scratch my penultimate Central Line shack. The journey to North Acton started me thinking – when was the last time that I visited the stretch between North Acton and West Ruislip? All I could come up with was the mid 80s when 1962ts would have ruled the roost in these parts. As I arrived at North Acton, I saw a set disappearing towards West Ruislip with one of my few (nine to be precise) winning 1992ts hanging on the back. Thankfully, I got the train number (006) and also had taken the precaution of printing out the Central Line working timetable from the TfL website. [Ed: for those who are not in the know, all the underground working timetables are freely available on the TfL website. TfL apparently got fed up of Freedom of Information requests for these publications so took the easy route that benefitted everyone and made them publicly available.]

Once I’d consulted the Working Timetable, I knew that it would be the best part of an hour before the winning set returned so I could either chase it or do a few fill in moves to rack up my mileage with 1992ts. After a brief moment of indecision, I opted for the latter so did 92263+92096+92058+92095 to White City and 92129+92192+92311+92039 back to North Acton. Readers of my exploits will probably recall that 92263 etc. featured on my previous jolly at the opposite end of the Central Line a week ago. But I still had loads of time before my winner would be back so the next move was aboard 92217+92070+92150+92111 upon which I made a return visit to Northolt. As with my previous visit to this particular shack, there was a set of 1992ts in the reversing siding about to re-enter service so I jumped aboard 92237+92222+92182+92295 to return to North Acton. Just as we were leaving Northolt, another required set of 1992ts rolled in but too later, the doors were closing! At least I managed to grab the train number so that I could cross reference against the WTT for its next working. I took 92237 etc. through to North Acton where I hoped that I’d have only a short wait for my initial winner. [Ed: Isn’t a bit odd; KJ scores certain shacks then visits them more than once in the same day?]. In the five minutes that I have to wait for my initial winner, I see another one heading west, this time to Ealing Broadway. But again I have the train number so I can track its next move through the WTT!

Bang on cue (to the half minute), my winner reappears after its jaunt up to West Ruislip! It’s the leading unit in 92025+92236+92114+92235. This means 30 winners so far this month and there’s at least two more behind me at the western end of the Central Line. I take this set through to Queensway and in the process cleared all Central Line shacks. “Woo Hoo!” I think to myself, “Third tube line clear of shacks.” Looking at the WTT, I can in theory get back to White City for the next winner but that’s a +1 and I’m not overly familiar with where I need to be etc. so I opt to play safe by taking 92103+92134+92252+92027 as far as Shepherds Bush where at least there’s an island platform to aid interchange between trains. A five minute wait ensues and no more winners are sighted before 92239+92142+92440+92259 roll in – it’s the last unit in the set which particularly interests me. “THE DECEMBER CHALLENGE HAS BEEN COMPLETED” is what I wanted to tell the world but I had visions of men in white coats appearing so I kept my thoughts to myself. Yes 31 winners in the month of December and all scored within the Travelcard Zones. This time I went to Oxford Circus where I swapped platforms onto 92243+92196+92412+92237 to backtrack for my last winner that I’d seen in action. As I had managed to get a train straightaway, I figured that I could easily make it back to Shepherds Bush again in order to intercept the final winner that I’d seen out and about. Given the wait that I had at The Bush, I’d have easily made it to White City but I was not gambling with winners! 92107+92158+92226+92237 showed up after about 8-9 minutes and was I pleased to be in “Challenge plus” territory. I again went to Oxford Circus but instead of staying with the Central Line, I switched to the Bakerloo, mainly as a means to access 378s on the Euston to Watford line.

The first train north was formed of 3261+3461 with the latter being a mileage requirement. There was a desire for a PNB so rather than bailing at Kensal Green, where surprisingly I had a shack requirement, I stuck on to Willesden Junction where I knew appropriate facilities existed. Feeling relived, a quick double back on 3447+friend saw me score Kensal Green at long last. A quick dash over the footbridge saw me leap on 3250+3441 for the relatively short leap to Harlesden and yet another shack score. 3441 was low on mileage but would have to wait as there was more important stuff to do first!

378230 followed up swiftly behind and acted as my conveyance to North Wembley and, you’ve guessed it, another shack score. Almost immediately behind was 3246+3446 which took me to South Kenton which left me with one Bakerloo shack to grab. At South Kenton, I was pleasantly surprised to see 3299+3436 being provided for my next train south – it had been absolutely ages since I’d sampled the hybrid unit 3299 (composed from units 3249 and 3439) and hence it was a mileage requirement. Coincidentally, it would clear 10 miles somewhere between Kilburn Park and Maida Vale and that suited me perfectly as Maida Vale was my last Bakerloo shack. Knowing that 3441 was not far behind, I set up camp for about 10 minutes but soon got distracted by 3260+3433 as the three-car set was still sub ten miles. “Ah well, Charing Cross here we come!” I thought to myself. At least 3441 could not overtake.

I’d slightly misjudged how long it would take 3250+3441 to reappear but after what seemed an eternity, the set appeared and I clambered on for the run down to Elephant & Castle. As I still needed more with 3441, I stayed aboard 3250+3441 during the five minute layover and headed back north with the same set. By Paddington, 3441 had exceeded the necessary 10 miles so I bailed and thought about calling it a day. Instead of heading back south along the Bakerloo, I made for the sub-surface lines and had to dash for 21435+21436 on a Circle Line for a Bus Stop Bash to Bayswater and the final shack attack of the day. The original plan had been to quit the Central Line at Queensway and take the short walk to Bayswater but, as you have seen, there was too much of interest on the Central for me to jump ship earlier. 21405+21406 were a couple of minutes behind on a Wimbledon bound train. With a 20+ minute wait for the next Thameslink, the bus home seemed the better option and Optare Olympus DOE53 provided the traction.

I reflected on the day’s proceedings. The highlight of course being the completion of the December Challenge with four more winners (3*1992ts and a 378 bring up the rear) but more importantly thirteen assorted shacks went in the book meaning that the Bakerloo and Central are now clear. The December Challenge has definitely been fun and at one point, I thought it would be difficult to achieve without scoring reams of 378s but it was the 458/5s that came to my rescue along with six 1992ts. Ironically, all of the 1992ts scored were outer units and the six I still need are all inner units! But there’s one thing the Challenge has definitely done though, that is to knock a huge hole in units that can be accessed within the Travelcard area. Another December Challenge would be extremely difficult, if not nigh on impossible, given my current wants list.

And to finish, here’s a list of the moves for the day –

I reckon you should adjust your sights up to 40;)

Sights have definitely been adjusted to 40. The good news is that more success has since come my way. S-7 duo 21487+21488 fell on the way into work earlier this week and S-8 duo 21001+21002 have also received their first entries in The Haulage Book. So current state of play is

December Challenge Winners (37) – 2558, 2559, 2560, 2562, 21001, 21002, 21477, 21478, 21487, 21488, 92025, 92069, 92099, 92107, 92259, 92343, 378149, 378206, 378216, 378217, 378219, 378220, 378223, 378224, 378226, 378227, 378230, 378231, 378233, 458508, 458512, 458513, 458515, 458522, 458523, 458526, 458529

Congratulations from me too on succesfully completing the December Challenge!

Two very good days indeed there, much shack scoring too so it won't be long, I'd imagine, before you need just mileage requirements in London.

Needing just 6 Central line sets is incredible, out of the hundreds that exist. I really need to make progress on those sets as I seem to recall I need over 270 of them!

37 winners just in London in 3 weeks is brilliant for someone with a rather full book, I do wonder if you will indeed manage to hit 40!

Congrats on your December Challenge, the Central Line shacks (rather you than me on that one) and the 458/5s!

I'll make a note to look up that Triumph band... Did you sample the Festive Ale in Spoons? Worth a go if you find yourself in one :)

Yeah congratulations are definitely in order Keith, I even had AC/DC's Highway to Hell album playing on Spotfy as I read it. Great Band, Great Album.

If I had 31 days in London, I think I'd have hit close to 150+ winners and thats without tube stock, so very well done to you, especially to someone, who has a full book as Lord Tram has rightly said. An awesome achievment.
Dare I say, maybe 50 winners or is time against you with Mrs J's plans?

Winners 38 & 39 fell last night in the shape of 378225 and 378256.

Time, and also the total incompetence of GTR and their ability to operate a half-decent train service this morning have almost certainly put winner number 40 on hold. I thought that I'd try for a sneaky 378 before work this morning but a failed train near Sutton put paid to that.

But if winner number 40 does appear, it will come in the dying days of the month when I am back at work after the Christmas break and result from either -
- good luck with say a set of new S-7 stock, or
- a sneaky trip out .

And if I get all my London winners now, I'll have nothing other than mileage needs to chase in 2016......

Merry Christmas one and all

December Challenge Winners (39) – 2558, 2559, 2560, 2562, 21001, 21002, 21477, 21478, 21487, 21488, 92025, 92069, 92099, 92107, 92259, 92343, 378149, 378206, 378216, 378217, 378219, 378220, 378223, 378224, 378225, 378226, 378227, 378230, 378231, 378233, 378256, 458508, 458512, 458513, 458515, 458522, 458523, 458526, 458529

Yeah, I can associate with that, 39 winners is still awesome. Hope you and the family have a great Xmas. Again congrats.

I know that feeling, I've got virtually nothing to chase in my local area. 2x 150, 1x390, 2x 68 (plus any blue ones that produce) and some 165s are all I can go looking forward up here. Oh and 2x 172 and I don't think the 168/3s tend to visit Birmingham.

Thanks to all of you for your warms words about the December Challenge. It's been fun so far and December is not over yet so let's see what the final few traveling days bring?

I can never see me being in a position of having cleared London although there's some parts where I'm very unlikely to score anything at present. But then, 2016 will offer new units to chase with the start of the 700s entering traffic and the 387/2s entering traffic en-masse in Spring 2016. Then there's still a good number of new S-7 sets to come. Mileage wise, there is still a lot of underground units that are sub 10 miles so I can see me starting to have many more days playing on the Central Line as well as previously unreported sports such as roaming the Met and Piccadilly Lines as well as the DLR. I will of course be able to do some in the name of chasing down my remaining shacks in the London area - and in some areas there's an embarrassingly high number.

I'm about to go in TPP mode for 2016 but I cannot see me having nearly as many winners in 2016 unless I go all out for provincial tram networks (now there's a thought!)

December Challenge Winners (39) – 2558, 2559, 2560, 2562, 21001, 21002, 21477, 21478, 21487, 21488, 92025, 92069, 92099, 92107, 92259, 92343, 378149, 378206, 378216, 378217, 378219, 378220, 378223, 378224, 378225, 378226, 378227, 378230, 378231, 378233, 378256, 458508, 458512, 458513, 458515, 458522, 458523, 458526, 458529

Yes, do join the army of us taking on light rail networks! I'm planning to do so myself in 2016, there's still way too much I need on Metrolink, NET and Sheffield Supertram.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you get up to in 2016, and what your TPP Mode generates. I'm almost all planned for January, March is sorted and February remains to be organised. There is far too much use of LM in the plan so far...

I can never see me being in a position of having cleared London

Really Keith? What makes you say that? It makes me a little fearful of even attempting it from my position in Buxton if you are going to struggle from your proximity. And with a more than handsome head start too!

I am in the position of having to make the decision before 1st Jan of giving up my other interests of bus and aircraft spotting to fully concentrate on cranking. Would it be futile to do so?

I don't think you need to do so, I keep in touch with my plane and bus spotting as well as railways but just not as much as I have done in the past.

Quite frankly if Lord Keith cannot ever clear London, there's zero hope for any of us!
