I wonder if Keith has got 458516 cleared for 10 miles yet
Alas no 458516 for me yet. Last night I was late home (and had stuff to do) otherwise I would have fallen straight into it on 17:28 Waterloo - Windsor.
And I spent this evening sampling several "adult" drinks. But thanks to Southern screwing up big time, I ended up on retractioned 5870+5732 to Wimbledon. With the bagging of 5870, that means that I've sampled every SWT 455 within the past 12 months.
It'll probably be next week before I get a look at any 458s as on a Friday I normally finish early - the normal Friday routine puts me on a few 456.

Now, fellow readers, two write-ups for the price of one!
Sunday 8th May – Elusive Beasts
Having the opportunity for a decent Sunday bash around London, I’d thought that I would go and have a look at the Central Line with the objective of attempting to round up the last three 1992ts units that I need for all-time haulage. I made sure that the relevant chores were dispatched nice and early then a problem struck, a huge problem – my mobile phone started to play up. Big Time! Only thing to do was talk to my Technical Advisor, in other words my eldest son. Thankfully, he identified the problem fairly quickly but in order for it to be fixed, that required a visit to his abode in Greenwich. And the Central Line does not serve Greenwich! But at least, I could bag a few DLR units on the way. So here’s the moves I made
LU
51649+51650 Morden to Bank
DLR
33+77+86 Bank to Cutty Sark – 33 and 86 cleared for 10 miles
DLR
15+65+79 Cutty Sark to Elverson Road – walk to son’s flat. He effects temporary repair on phone and we have a natter. Come to the conclusion that long term solution is to buy a new phone rather than rely on temporary fixes or a costly repair (circa £40 as phone is well out of warranty). So we spend an hour browsing the net and eventually alight upon a good deal. Having dropped in on him at relatively short notice, I did not want to take up too much of his time so once we had concluded the necessary business, I was on my way.
DLR
28+88+89 Elverson Road to Lewisham
DLR
28+88+89 Lewisham to Westferry – 28 and 89 cleared for 10 miles
DLR
25+55 Westferry to Canning Town
DLR
32+47 Canning Town to Stratford – 47 clears for 10 miles
LU
92095+92128+92218+92019 Stratford to Bond Street – 92128, 92019 cleared for 10 miles
LU
92183+92026+92116+92161 Bond Street to Perivale - 92026, 92116, 92161 all cleared for 10 miles
LU
92175+92224+92341+92083 Perivale to East Acton – 92175, 92083 cleared for 10 miles
LU
92087+92250+92460+92043 East Acton to Bank – 92087, 92250, 92460 cleared for 10 miles
LU
92213+92408+92206+92009 Bank to North Acton – all cleared for 10 miles
LU
92245+92154+92436+92011 North Acton to Lancaster Gate – 92245, 92154 cleared for 10 miles
LU
92121+92036+92112+92281 Lancaster Gate to Oxford Circus
LU
11087+11088 Oxford Circus to Stockwell – 11087 cleared for 10 miles
LU
51656+51657 Stockwell to Morden
OK, I did not find any of my three 1992ts units although from reports elsewhere at least one was in traffic that day. However, given the vast quantity that I still need for 10 miles, I was not in the game of festering somewhere on the off chance that one may come wandering by. Nevertheless, it was a good afternoon out with five more DLR units cleared for 10 miles along with a further 16 1992 ts also admitted to the Ten Mile Club. And of course, it’s always good to meet up with my son. So what of the phone? Son’s “temporary” fix is holding out a week later even though the new one has arrived (that’s just a case of finding enough time to set it up).
Tuesday 10th May – Gobbling up the Requirements
Another free evening after work saw me pondering what to do. I’d already had some winning S-7 stock on the way into work that morning (21537+21538 for the record) so did this mean that the Railway Gods were looking down favourably upon me? I certainly hoped they were as I left my place of employment and made for the Victoria Line. Letting the first train go as it was dud, in rolled
11007+11008. “Praise The Lord” was the first thing that I wanted to announce to the world followed swiftly by “Gotcha!”. In the end, I kept my thoughts to myself even though 11008 was the last half-set of 2009ts that I needed. I leapt aboard and what seemed like a couple of minutes later, I was alighting at Seven Sisters even though in reality, the journey lasted around 20 minutes. So all we need to do with 2009ts now, is clear the remaining one-third of the class for 10 miles then I can completely ignore it in the same way that I do 1995ts and other underground stocks where everything is over 10 miles.
11051+11052 completed the job and took me on to Blackhorse Road.
Transferring swiftly to the Overground platforms, I wondered what the Railway Gods had in store for me seeing as I only needed three 172/0s to clear for 10 miles 9and a sizeable run was needed off of two of them before admittance to the Ten Mile Club could be considered. The worst situation could be that one of my 172s was detained at their pleasure in HMP Willesden, then I’d have half an hour’s wait for the second and I’d end up passing the third on the way so I’d end up having a long fester for it to come back. Or even worse that one was on the diagram that kills time at Barking rather than go straight back on the next available train. So how did I fare against that “worst case” scenario?
Within minutes of me arriving at Blackhorse Road and positioning myself on the footbridge, the platform announcer was warning us of the impending arrival of a Gospel Oak bound train followed a few seconds later by an equivalent announcement in respect of a Barking-bound service. The first to arrive was a dud, Gospel Oak bound 172002. That came and went before
172003 strolled in from Gospel Oak. One down, I thought to myself. But the train was absolutely wedged and more folk wanted to get on. Not one for giving up easily, it seemed that most folk were trying the back doors so what about the front? Much more pleasant by comparison – at least you could breathe in the front. And luckily, I only needed a couple of miles off of 003 to allow it to join the Ten Mile Club so I was off at Leytonstone High Road.
Following closely behind (well about four minutes) was the rush-hour extra service – from a timetable perspective - with
172005. This is looking good, I thought to myself – we need this one so on I jumped and while the train was full, it was certainly not crush loaded like the one in front. The run to Barking put a dent in the mileage needed but I was still a way off clearing it for 10 miles having only done a Bus Stop Bash to get it new in the dying days of 2012.
So upon arrival at Barking I started to work out exactly how far I needed to go when I remembered that behind this one was the seventh, rush hour diagram which killed the best part of 45 minutes at Barking before heading back to Upper Holloway. I could see it outside the station waiting to come in but the entire c2c service seemed to be running about five minutes late – this meant that the 172 had to wait for a Grays-line service to clear platform 7 before it could terminate and discharge it passengers. In the end I gave up waiting for it as I knew that 172005 was about to leave. Was this the Railway Gods telling me that I should be grateful for what they had provided thus far or that I should not worry as it was a dud? A comfortably full
172005 left Barking on time and somewhere in the Leyton/stone area it tipped the 10-mile balance so that meant another unit joining an already bulging Ten Mile Club! I opted to stay on to Blackhorse Road though for a +1 onto an unknown working back to Barking (the one behind that was also unknown). I left 172005 feeling quite content that I had managed two out of three 172/0s with relative ease and positioned myself on the footbridge to keep an eye on proceedings, particularly the two unknown workings.
I was stationary for all of ten seconds as I could not believe my eyes – through the waiting passengers, I first saw the number 172007 but having clearly identified 172007 on my way back from Barking, I took a second look. It was
172001 not 172007. Better get down those stairs smartish. 172001’s identity was confirmed by a check of the coach numbers, 59311 and 59411. My earlier pessimism about the Railway Gods putting obstacles in the way of me grabbing my remaining 172/0s was definitely unfounded. I leapt aboard and sat down. “Bit different to the crush loading from an hour earlier” I thought to myself sitting down quite content in the knowledge that barring an in-service failure, I was on target to clear my last 172/0 for 10 miles. 172001 comfortably made it to Barking but was still needing a further nudge to secure membership on the Ten Mile Club. This was despite me having had two previous trips with it – alas both of those were Bus Stop Bashes. So I simply swapped carriages and settled down for the return journey with
172001. But where should I bail? I could go for Wanstead Park and take a shortish walk to Manor park. Likewise, I could bail at either of the Leyton stations and have a short walk onto the Central Line but none of these seemed as attractive as going through to Blackhorse Road and the Victoria Line down to Stockwell. With 172001 comfortably over 10 miles by the time I left it at Blackhorse Road, it was welcomed into the Ten Mile Club and I bade it farewell and made for the Victoria Line.
Despite the prospect of some dinner sitting in the fridge when I eventually made it home, I contemplated trying to clear at least one 2009ts set for 10 miles. As I made it onto the Victoria Line platforms, I noted a required set heading the other way to Walthamstow – at least that would be back fairly swiftly. But even though the first train south was dud (
11031+11032), I still took it as I knew that there would be a Seven Sisters starter before my requirement came back from its brief sojourn at Walthamstow. That was a good move on my part as while the next one up from Walthamstow was dud (11055+11056), the clunk of the points at Seven Sisters indicated that the following train was indeed as Seven Sisters starter – in rolls
11063+11064. I was one happy bunny as 11064 required a micro mileage to clear for 10 miles. By the time we had reached Finsbury Park it was job done and I bailed as I was fairly certain, I had another requirement behind. Within two minutes,
11043+11044 rolled in - it was 11043 that I had seen a wee while back at Blackhorse Road – and I leapt into 11043 for the longish drag south to Stockwell. By the time I alighted from 11043, the ten-mile barrier had been well and truly breached so yet another new member signed up to the Ten Mile Club!
It only remained for me to cross to the Northern Line platforms and board
51577+51578 for the journey back to Morden and on to home and that dinner sitting in the fridge awaiting me to devour it. I thought back over the evening. My last 2009ts cleared for haulage plus all the 172/0s now fully paid up members of the Ten Mile Club. What more could I ask of the Railway Gods? Yes, the cherry on top of the cake – two more 2009ts in the Ten Mile Club as well. Definitely a good evening. And the dinner was good as well once it had made friends with the microwave.

You mentioned future metrolink bashing as a possibility. If Rochdale Town Centre is amongst your needs, let me know when you're coming up and I'll buy you a beer....
I'll definitely be Metrolink bashing again as I still need around 70 of the little critters plus the vast majority of the shacks and track (including Rochdale) so I might take you up on your offer ....
