Tyne and Wear's good fun, I would highly recommend getting up there for it.

Sounds like some good trips coming up this year then!

Friday March 18th – Another Yorkshire Interlude

Regular readers will note the complete absence of any reports since my very successful trip to South Yorkshire at the end of February. Since then, I managed to have a couple of quick spins on the DLR searching for my last and very elusive DLR unit, the unlucky number 13. However, while mileage accumulation with DLR units was quite successful, the unlucky number 13 continues to elude me. One day perhaps?

Fast forward to Friday 18th and I was going to have another day in Yorkshire courtesy of the East Coast Seat Sale. Yorkshire and back for a Tenner is excellent value for money in my book so with an early alarm set, I left the house in the company of Mrs KJ (unlike me with a day’s pleasure on the horizon, she had a 12 hour shift in prospect) and made for the Northern Line. 1995ts 51506+51507 provided the motive power as far as Stockwell where I switched to the Victoria Line – it’s somewhat of a trek to stay on the Northern all the way round via Bank. I was pleased with 2009ts 11043+11044 as 11043 was still sub 10 miles and it would clear the magic 10 mile barrier en route to The Cross.

At The Cross I picked up my tickets for the day and made for the platforms. I was horrified/annoyed/disgusted to see 91132 heading up my train but being on a fixed ticket, I took my seat and consoled myself with the fact that 91132 would clear 500 miles in the course of the journey. [Ed: I’m sure 55013 will be along in a minute to berate me and say that this particular machine is one of his lowest mileage 91s.] The journey went well until we were leaving Stevenage when the conductor came over the PA and announced that we were making an additional call at St Neots to pick up passengers from a failed train. At St Neots, we crossed from the fast to the slow lines - required micro track me thinks – and drew up alongside the failed service. It transpired that it had been there almost an hour and already three East Coast services had been allowed to pass so quite why we were singled out as the preferred service to take the stranded folk northwards seemed a little odd. A travelling fitter alighted from our train and made for the dead 91. Meanwhile we scooped up the delayed passengers who had spent most of the previous hour admiring the delights of St Neots! Again, we heard the delightful voice of the conductor on the PA – now we had an additional stop at Peterborough to set down folk from the failed train. As it turned out there was only two bods to alight as most of the other Peterborough bound folk had the common-sense to jump on the first available Great Northern service!

Leaving Peterborough, this fiasco had cost us about 18-20 minutes which put in jeopardy a whole series of moves for me further down the line. We did not pick up any time as far as Wakefield Westgate so I did a quick check of RTT and saw that the next service from Kings Cross was almost to time so with plan A out of the window, I bailed as I knew one of my lowest mileage 91s was up behind. 91107 rolled in and I joined SKYFALL for the dash into Leeds. While still my third lowest mileage 91, every 10 miles is of course welcome. Now the big question was what to do with myself as my carefully choreographed set of moves had gone out of the window some two hours previously and I’d not put any effort into a plan B.

185135 soon made the decision for me as it was badly in need of some attention from my red pen and at least by scoring this one, my overall 185 requirements drop into single figures. Huddersfield here we come so with a winner under my belt (and cleared for 10 miles as well) I felt a little more relaxed. I dropped a message to a mate with access to a Magic Box asking about red pen 153s along with mileage required 14x units. He must not have had a lot to do as the reply was almost instant but the news was not good – he could only locate two 144s for me. I pit in another request for gen and this time, he came up with the news that three of my winning 158s were out and about. Now, how many bits of the jigsaw, could I put into place?

I did not have long at Huddersfield before a second winning 185 appeared so it was back to Leeds with 185128. Departing Huddersfield, I noted 144005 in the bay on the Wakefield shuttle. That should stick all day so I was not overly worried and spent the journey back trying to piece the jigsaw together. In Leeds I had half an hour to wait for the next winner so time for a fill-in move. A conveniently placed 158793 took me out to Bramley for a +4 onto something back. I do not like Bramley as it is somewhat of a hike between the platforms and the road under the station bridge can be a swine to cross. But as I bumbled down the ramp from the Bradford bound platform, I noticed that there was now a Zebra Crossing to aid one’s passage across the treacherous highway. I made it over to the other platform in about 2 minutes but was surprised to see the train in and the doors closing. I lunged for the ever decreasing orifice and the guard must have noticed that he was closing the doors well before departure time as he suddenly released the doors! I later found that I was on 150137 which was ultra-low mileage so the four miles from Bramley back into Leeds was more than welcome.

Back in Leeds, I had a comfortable +8 to wander from the eastern end of platform 12 to the opposite end of platform 9 where my third winner should have been waiting. And indeed it was – hello 158755. I stepped on board and took my seat; in the centre car of this three-car unit of course. I had two options available to me now. Either to go somewhere with the winning 158755 and double back for another winning that was 45 minutes behind or try to cut across to the Huddersfield to Wakefield line to intercept one of my last two 144s that I needed for 10 miles. The latter idea won the day as the second winning 158 could be bagged later in the afternoon on its way back from Blackpool. But the only way to cut across to grab the 144 seemed to involve going all the way to Hebden Bridge and dropping onto the Manchester to Leeds via Brighouse service, leaving me with a +3 at Mirfield, albeit on the same platform. The latter seemed quite appealing especially as Hebden Bridge was a required shack although I had passed through many a time.

At Hebden Bridge, I had a +5 which was just sufficient time to change platforms via the subway and take a PNB. Dud 158787 rolled in spot on time for the uneventful run across to Mirfield where we arrived a shade early despite a signal check on the approaches to allow a late-running TPE service to pass. As soon as 158787 had cleared the platforms, I could see the headlights of a 144 on the approach which soon identified itself as the required 144005. Things were looking up! I stuck with the 144 as far as Wakefield Kirkgate passing the almost desolate wastelands that were once Healey Mills yard and depot – long gone are the days when HM allocated 37s ranked among some of the hardest to get for haulage although their 40s seemed to be somewhat easier to come by despite both classes being designated freight locos with minimal booked passenger work.

At Kirkgate, I alighted from 144005 which was now well over 10 miles and, much to the annoyance it seemed of the RPIs manning the exit, calmly walked through the subway to the opposite platform for a dud 144003 which was Sheffield-bound. I toyed with the idea of bailing at Darton to score the shack but then a light-bulb moment made me realise that I could get two shacks in the book instead. So I passed Darton, noting that when I get around to it, the +22 fester will basically mean out with a deck-chair, and carried on racking up the mileage with 144003 until I alighted at Chapeltown. At this new shack, there was a +10 onto a northbound service so I popped into the adjacent ASDA for a box of sticky buns before transferring my allegiances to the opposite platform – I declined the 600m step free walk for a quick dash down one set of stairs and up the other side. 144020 rolled in to take me to Wombwell and the third shack score of the day. Here I had a comfortable 12 minutes to change platforms to await my next chariot – time to break open those sticky buns!

144015 showed up more or less on time [Ed: That’s three dud 144s in a row] to take me to Meadowhall for a +1 onto 142087 to Rotherham Central for another theoretical +1. You might think that’s a bit risky but I knew that the second +1 was going to be more like a +5. That first +1 was exactly that and 142087 was dud but the +5 at Rotherham put me onto 144012, my last 144 that I needed for 10 miles. I went through to Sheffield with this evolving beast but the bash was evolving too! The comfortable +10 at Sheffield reduced to a nail-biting -1 due to a number of issues such as poor station working at Meadowhall, a dog on the track near the old Attercliffe Road station and a signal check just outside Sheffield. I was aiming for the next Leeds service and we drew up alongside it. But the gen was dud – I was expecting 158848 but it was ‘845 so I let it go and decided to reappraise the moves for the remainder of the afternoon. So with 144012 now cleared for 10 miles (along with all of its 22 class-mates), I first went for a celebratory photo of the refurbished 144 and its different paint garb. Then what could I salvage from the afternoon?

I hung around Sheffield for 20 minutes or so before anything of interest showed. Then I had the choice of two items either Manchester bound 185120 or Leeds bound 220018+220027. Both 185120 and 220018 were winners and I opted for some Vomit Comet mileage simply because I though a 17:00 arrival in Leeds would put me in a better place if only to access the 158 that I had flagged earlier. Both of the two 220s (220018+220027) were crowded but I managed to locate a seat at the very front and settled back for the uninspiring run back to Leeds. With 200018 now successfully “red-penned” as well as well and truly cleared for 10 miles, the next aim was to see about getting in that last 158 that I had a fix on. At this stage of the game, I could comfortably get to Halifax for it but I was a little distracted – I could hardly go to Northern land and turn down a required Tin Rocket. 153359 was couple up with 150139 on the shack-scratchers special, i.e. the Leeds to Goole via Knottingley service that serves all those rarely used shacks east of Knottingley such as Snaith and Whitley Bridge. I’d only asked my mate to look up winning Tin Rockets as he’d get overwhelmed if I added in mileage requirements. 153359 fell into the latter category – it would have simply been rude to refuse it and by the first stop of Woodlesford, the requisite 10 miles were on the clock. I trudged over the footbridge and soon 144016 showed up to take me back into Leeds

I passed 158794 on the approaches to Leeds and quietly cursed as that was the only 158 my mate could not find on the Magic Box but it appears that it was a rush-hour chuck-out from Neville Hill – he’s forgiven! I had a +2 at Leeds to get onto my next train so I made sure that I was by the front door so I could give it a go. I made it over the crowded bridge and onto 158757 in about three minutes, pushing my way onto the wedged train just as the platform staff were “blowing up”. I could only get as far as New Pudsey but that was good enough to clear 158757 for 10 miles. I crossed over to the opposite platform to await the arrival of a second winning 158 and about two down, 158795 rolled in having been all the way to Blackpool. The following train from Leeds out to New Pudsey was a theoretical +1 but in the event would have just missed so I was rather pleased that I made 158757.

I was in somewhat of a celebratory mood on the run back into Leeds with two winning 158s under the belt. I had around 20 minutes before my train back down south was due but there was no signs of it. Surely it was not cancelled? A swift check of RTT explained all – the inbound working was 15 late! I had enough time to dash out to Sainsburys to grab supper and returned to the station to see that the train was electric – I was expecting the booked HST! Rifling through RTT it appears that e failure which had delayed my northbound run in the morning was still having an effect many hours later and the HST that should have formed my homeward bound service, had been dispatched from Kings Cross earlier than planned. But that was not the end of it – the electric was 91126 which I had only a few weeks previously on the South Yorkshire trip. Are 91126 and 91132 stalking me, I wonder?

Anyway, I had no choice but to take the dud 91 all the way to Kings Cross – at least I had the products of the Sainsburys visit to distract me along with the remnants of the ASDA sticky buns. At Kings Cross, I made a mad dash for the Underground where I had 11045+11046 to Stockwell and 51501+51701 home to Morden. I had plenty of opportunity to reflect on the day. The obvious highlight was clearing my last two 144s for 10 miles followed by roping in five winners and three shacks. But there’s still plenty of work to do in Northern-land – shacks, winners, 10-milers ….

And to round off, here’s a list of the day’s moves and key milestones.

Welcome back Keith, I wondered where you were.

Another top read, a good bit of progress towards clearing all of Northern. Something I'm also a very long way from achieving. Kite might be nearly there mind

:)
No berating from me.
91132 is my sixth lowest, currently nestling on 692.05 miles.

Anyway, as usual a great read.
It's always nice to read reports from my local area.
I particularly love Hebden Bridge station, it's one of my favourites, very olde worlde.

Sounds like a very good day. I admire your efforts for going for 10 miles on stuff. All I go for at the moment is at least getting the red pen out. It's something I could look at I guess once everything is cleared!

Sunday 20th March – Crocked at Croxley

The objective of today’s excursion was plain and simple – to see how many of my remaining underground shacks could be visited during the course of the day. Back in January, I’d had a go at reducing the list and indeed that little outing was quite successful as I more than halved the size of my list; leaving twelve to get, one of which was closed for refurbishment.

Now that Tufnell Park was open again, this was the first available opportunity to have a go at the remaining shacks. I really wanted to bag as many as possible in one go as almost all were outside the confines of my normal Travelcard validity so that meant buying a zones 1-9 ticket. Another thing not running in my favour was the fact that I had to go to three different points of the compass in my quest to score the final dozen. Today was going to be all about “nushacks” and should any 10 milers or, stretching things a bit, even winners come along, these would simply be a Brucie Bonus.

The usual Sunday chores having been dealt with, I made for the Northern Line where 1995ts 51502+51503 provided the traction for the first leg of the journey to Stockwell. Here I took advantage of the level interchange to the Victoria Line and first up was dud (as are most 2009ts sets) 11031+11032 which I took to Euston and swapped again to the Northern Line where 51572+57573 took me to Camden Town. I attempted the rapid interchange from the Edgware branch platforms to the Barnett branch but the volume of people meant that I saw my train doors closing as I made it to the platform. 51626+51627 were only a minute or two behind and took me to Tufnell Park and winning shack number one of the day.

Switching to the southbound platform, again I was thwarted by some slow moving passengers so had to wait the extra couple of minutes for 51609+51705 to take me to Tottenham Court Road. For the first time in many a year, I attempted the interchange with the Central Line and I was correct, it seemed to be a notable hike. Once I had made it up an escalator, along several passageways and down a flight of stairs to the Central Line, it was not long before 92177+92406+92088+92221 showed up. I was headed east so took a look at the lists and noted that three out of the four units were low mileage – only 92088 was already over the required 10 miles. By the time I alighted at Stratford, 920406 had also staggered over the 10 mile barrier. I still needed to get a Travelcard to cover my planned travel in the outer zones so I took advantage of the queue-less ticket machines to acquire my Z1-9 Travelcard before boarding DLR 55+58. 55 was sub 10 miles but I needed to go via Stratford International if it were to reach the target. So The Haulage Book records 55+58 to Stratford International followed by 55+58 to West Ham with 55 now joining 58 in the Ten Mile Club.

At West Ham, I changed to the c2c platforms where I had a short wait for 357314. This was my first experience of a 357/3 and yes, definitely more spacious but whether long-distance commuters who will see a reduction in seating will agree, that’s a totally different debate. 357314 was not a mileage requirement but of course was a renumbering hit. My rules are clear that if a unit (or even coaches with the unit) is renumbered but the formation does not change then the pre-existing mileage is carried over. However, I do like to have renumbered units under their new identity wherever possible. At Barking, I left 357314 behind as it was headed down the Grays line and switched over to the main platforms where I had a few minutes before 357008+357022 rolled in to take me out to Upminster. 357022 was dud but 357008 needed a little push to get it over the 10-mile barrier and into the Ten Mile Club.

Now I was at Upminster, it was time to start the assault on the District Line shacks. The District Line was suspended between Tower Hill and West Ham for Crossrail works and running a slightly reduced frequency between West Ham and Upminster but my calculations showed that this would not unduly affect me. S-7 set 21493+21494 was the first set out and took me to Hornchurch. I did not stay here long and switched to 21311+21312 for the Bus Stop Bash back to Upminster Bridge – as I rode in 21312, that short leap saw 21312 breach the 10 mile barrier. The island platform here proved useful as my next train arrived on the opposite side at the same time as I did so it was a quick cross-platform dash onto D78 stock 7075+7530 to Dagenham East. As I alighted, I could see my train out approaching the station but with no island platform here, it was a quick leap over the footbridge onto 21379+21380. I was fortunate that I was sat in the rear of the D78 stock because that was a tight one. I left the S-7 set at Elm Park and it was again a short wait before 7007+7508 made themselves known to me. 7508 was leading and the front looked particularly filthy while the inner cab was almost pristine – I wondered whether what was now the outer end of the double-cab unit had recently been on the inside and vice-versa. I alighted from the D78 unit at Becontree for shack score number six of the afternoon. This was also notable as the District Line was now clear on the shack front. 21311+21312, a repeat from a short while ago, reappeared to take me to West Ham. This included a micro-grice of new track on the approaches to West Ham. All trains were reversing in the Upminster bound platform and were using the reversing siding/loop to cross from the London bound track over to the Upminster platform.

With the District Line shack suitably marked off, it was now time to think about the remaining six shacks that were still needed before I could finally tick off the Underground as being complete. All of those six shacks were served by the Metropolitan Line and sat variously in Zones 5, 6 and 7. The only thing to do was hot-foot it over to Metro-land. The conveniently placed Jubilee Line offered a suitable, if uninteresting route with 1996ts 96045+96116 providing the traction. After almost half an hour I alighted at Finchley Road and let out a small curse as I could see a Metropolitan Line train disappearing into the distance. What had I missed? But those “cursory” thoughts left my mind once the next Met Line train came in – train 405 was formed of 21003+21004. I gleefully got on and vowed to stay aboard until I reached a required shack. Why the elation you may ask? I had only fallen into my last S-8 stock needed for haulage! Riding initially in 21004, I changed to 21003 at Harrow-on-the Hill so I could log both ends of the S-8 set. It seemed to be an age before I alighted from 21003 as I ignored the first required Met shack and instead made for Chorleywood – this allowed me to record 21003 as my first S-8 set to breach the 10 mile barrier.

With one Met shack down and five to go, I walked through the subway at Chorleywood expecting to reach the London bound platform. Instead, I ended up outside the small station building but I was soon back on the London bound platform. With just enough time for a PNB, 21037+21038 rolled into take me to Northwood where I switched directions and boarded the next northbound train comprised of 21007+21008 which was Watford-bound. I made sure that I was in the rear of the train as I knew that I had a tight connection involving a dash over a footbridge. We arrived at Croxley where I bailed and fortunately the southbound train was only just arriving so I had a good chance of avoiding a 15 minute wait. That was until I stumbled on the stairs and in the process aggravated an old knee injury – suddenly mad dashes were out of the window and all I could manage was a moderately paced limp! Needless to say, the southbound connection was well and truly gone by the time I made it over the bridge and down the stairs. [Ed: You’ll be pleased to hear that Keith’s knee is already on the mend]. While I was now technically “crocked”, I was not going to give up on my quest of clearing my Underground shacks.

So despite my efforts, I ended up with the 15 minute wait that I was so desperately trying to avoid but at least I had the chance to exercise my knee by walking up and down the platform to stop it completely seizing up. 21007+21008 rolled in on cue and annoyingly, the previous northbound train had been and gone – the booked 30 second connection was more like 90 seconds on that occasion. I boarded the opposite end of the unit to that which I had arrived in mainly to even out mileages with the 21xxx car. I bailed at North Harrow and in the process cleared the main line shacks on the Met. Now it was just three on the Uxbridge branch to get.

21093+21094 soon whisked me away from North Harrow to Harrow-on-the-Hill. There was only a few minutes before an Uxbridge train was due – this turned up with 21027+21028. Eastcote was my selected alighting point (four Met shacks down, two to go) and it seemed a lengthy wait (longer than the timetabled seven and a half minutes) before 21049+21050 appeared to take me forward to Ruislip Manor. The end was now well and truly in sight! I staggered over the footbridge and had a short wait for S-7+1 set 21327+21328 to take me to West Harrow. Alighting from the S-7+1 set at West Harrow at 17:29, I punched the air in celebration at clearing all my Underground shacks although I’m sure that it will not be too long before there’s new ones to get with the proposed Croxley Link (diverting Met trains to Watford Junction) and the Northern Line’s Battersea extension.

21107+21108 arrived to take me away from West Harrow and I bailed at Northwick Park, making use of the island platform to change directions. I had only a few seconds to wait before 21093+21094 reappeared to take me northwards – this time I rode in 21094, again to even out mileages. At Moor Park, the island platform again came in handy to switch trains and now I was on 21077+21078 – this set was taken to Wembley Park where I alighted, the idea being to have a look and see if my last set of 1996ts required for 10 miles, 96091, was around. But as my knee was far from comfortable, I did not give it too long before I boarded 21111+21112 to Baker Street. Going downstairs, 3259+3448 took me to Oxford Circus followed by 11037+11038 to Stockwell and finally 51506+51507 south to Morden.

So what of the day? The objective of clearing all Underground shacks was achieved although the highlight had to be the completely unexpected Brucie Bonus of getting my last S-8 set in the book. Add in a few other units nudged over the 10-mile threshold and it was a good day out. And of that crocked knee? The good news is that it’s on the mend and I should be back to 100% in a few days.

Here is a table of the day’s moves and key milestones -

Congratulations on clearing the Tube shacks, and indeed the S8 sets!

Bad news on the injury, but glad to hear you're recovering well!

Congratulations on your clearances from me as well.
Shame about your fall, though. These things can put a real dampener on an otherwise good day.

Thank guys for all your good wishes - the offending knee is almost back to where it was before the stumble. It's never going to be 100% again - it was only about 98% before the altercation with the stairs at Croxley. But as long as I look after it, then I'll be OK. After, I can't let things like that get in the way of serious bashing.

DLR 13 is starting to wind me up though - I may have to have a cheeky trip or two out to look for it.

Sounds like DLR's 13 is to you what 150235 and 390114 were like to me! Good news on the knee being better too, not long until your next adventure I suspect.

That was an enjoyable catch up - congratulations on your DLR and Underground successes!

For the record, I had Pudding Mill Lane in its previous form before the Olympics - myself and a friend pitched up there one evening as it was a good place to photograph the recently-finished Olympic park. I remember we were (rightly) reprimanded by Angry Loudspeaker Man for hanging around TFL property with DSLRs and *shudder* tripods!

Wednesday 30th March – A Minor Irritant No More

For some while, I have only needed one DLR unit to clear the fleet for haulage and with a free couple of hours after work, I decided to go full out and attempt to nail the big gap in my London requirements. I was privately cursing a late departure from work – something to do with “stakeholder management”. But within 10 minutes of leaving the workplace, any curses soon turned into whoops of joy as the first train up on the District line was a required set of S-7 stock, 21495+21496. I split the journey up to Tower Hill by travelling in 21496 as far as Blackfriars with 21495 completing the run on to Tower Hill. This enabled me to log the minimum required one mile in each “half” of the unit. 21489+21490 were on hand at Tower Hill to take me bank to Monument before I tackled the subterranean rabbit warren that connects the various bits of Bank station to Monument.

Arriving on the Bank DLR platforms, 48+88+95 formed the first train out which was Lewisham-bound. I leapt about and grabbed a seat for the trip to the centre of financial gluttony – aka Canary Wharf. Fortunately, all three units cleared 10 miles on the journey adding to the 26 units that had already reached such a prestigious status. The plan was to set up camp here at the Wharf until either I had seen all the Bank-Lewisham and Canary Wharf-Stratford workings or until number 13 showed its ugly mug. I knew that it would take around 30 -35 minutes before I could guarantee having seen everything but with a movement every 1-2 minutes, there was plenty to keep me entertained. Watching all the trains, I could not help but think how many mileage requirements I was simply letting go but tonight, there was only to be one star of the ball, if she turned up.

The plan was that if I had exhausted the Canary Wharf workings and unit 13 was continuing to be a shy beast, I would migrate over to Canning Town where I could see all the Beckton and Woolwich trains. I would camp out on the high-level platforms and if I saw something on the low level, either make a mad dash or, as would be more likely, go for the chase on the following service. But at around 18:00, the second half of my plan was declared redundant as 13 lost its shyness and appeared from the Lewisham direction with two friends in tow. But there was a slight problem - I was on the wrong platform! Consequently, a quick dash down the stairs and up the appropriate escalator, taking care not to repeat the agonies of Croxley 10 days previously, was the order of the day. I made it across and managed to board 13+81+96 for the run down to Bank. I naturally chose to park myself in unit 13; no seats were available but at least it was now safely in the book. Job done! Moreover, I felt like broadcasting to the world that I’ve finally cleared all my DLR units but I’m sure that all the normal on the train would look at me strangely as if I were growing horns [ED: They’ve probably also cleared their DLR units many times over but are totally oblivious to the fact.]

Now what should I do? It was too early to go home so once I got to Bank, I alighted from 13 (unit 96 having tipped the 10 mile scales during the journey) and switched to the departure platform while 13 and friends went off to investigate the reversing tunnel. 13+81+96 soon reappeared and I reboarded – the aim was to clear 13 for 10 miles so a run to Lewisham was needed. 81 was also low mileage so it was the Greenwich area before I could add that one to the 10 Mile Club and 13 did not achieve that worthy status until the approaches to Lewisham. The arrival at Lewisham was also unusual in that the train went into platform 5 (platform 6 being the norm here). So I had the micro-grice of the rarely used platform and I would have to leave as well from Platform 5 in order to score the crossover. I left 13 and friends behind at Lewisham and waited for the following service which appeared with 01+10+59. Thankfully this train also used Platform 5.

I took 01+10+59 back up to Canary Wharf where I left the train – 01 was a mileage dud and I did not fancy going all the way back to Bank to clear 10 for 10 miles so only 59 fell into the 10 Mile Club. It was only a couple of minutes before 42+63 materialised for the run up to Stratford. I leapt aboard and went through to Stratford with 42 joining the 10 Mile Club during the journey. 1992 ts 92329+92442+92256+92189 were located for the journey back to Central London with all bar 92442 being needed for the 10 Mile Club. By the time the train had reached Bank, the other three had also achieved enough credits to join the TMC. I left the train here and trudged through the tunnel to the Northern Line platforms where I had a zero wait for 51722 and friend to take me home to Morden.

So what of the evening? The target of getting that irritant called DLR unit 13 out of my hair had been achieved and with a Brucie Bonus of another winning pair of S-7 stock in the book (along with several new members of the 10 Mile Club), surely it had to be a good evening? The scoring of winning DLR 13 takes my London area requirements down below 40 units – I’m not counting S-7 sets where as soon as I score a new one, another seems to enter traffic. But I’ll not rest properly until that number reduces to an even more manageable level although it’s going to be tough work once the new 700s start entering traffic.

And to round off, here are the evening’s moves -

LU 21495+21496 Westminster ---> Tower Hill WINNER x 2
LU 21489+21490 Tower Hill ---> Monument ---
DLR 48+88+95 Bank ---> Canary Wharf All cleared for 10 miles
DLR 13+81+96 Canary Wharf ---> Bank 13 = WINNER, 96 cleared for 10 miles
DLR 13+81+96 Bank ---> Lewisham 13+81 cleared for 10 miles
DLR 01+10+59 Lewisham ---> Canary Wharf 59 cleared for 10 miles
DLR 42+63 Canary Wharf ---> Stratford 42 cleared for 10 miles
LU 92329+92442+92256+92189 Stratford ---> Bank All cleared for 10 miles except 92442
LU 51722+??? Bank ---> Morden ---

Winners DLR 13, LU 21495, 21496

Thursday 31st March – Central to My Ambitions

Tonight was not supposed to be a bashing evening but instead getting on the outside of a couple of pints and a curry with a mate. However, my mate called me during the day to say that he would have to defer the appointment because of illness. He suggested Sunday (April 3rd) as an alternative. The rearrangement suited me as the Sunday was now free on account of 31289 not making the Spa Valley Diesel Gala.

I did not have any proper time to plan anything so I opted to spend the time on the Central Line looking for some of the many, many sets of 1992ts that were sub-ten miles. And of course, if any of the five required units happened to come along, all the better! I managed to escape from work on time and 1996ts 96107 was my traction up to Bond Street where I picked up the Central Line. Then the moves were as follows

92319+92166+92188+92099 Bond Street to Stratford
All apart from 92319 were sub-ten miles and by Stratford all had been cleared for 10 miles.

92127+92068+92248+92043 Stratford to Barkingside
It had been an absolute age since I had been around the Hainault loop, just a pity that 92068 was the only unit needed for 10 miles.

92321+92234+92126+92107 Barkingside to Leyton
The leading two units were needed for 10 miles and by Leyton had joined the Ten Mile Club

92193+92086+92106+92269 Leyton to Queensway
All four units required to varying degrees for 10 miles and 92106 was one of the Famous Five, i.e. a winner. Only the Fearsome Four left now!

92085+92092+92038+92079 Queensway to Bethnal Green
All bar 92079 required for 10 miles and all now in the 10 Mile Club by the time I alighted at Bethnal Green

92307+92434+92066+92227 Bethnal Green to Oxford Circus
Another three units cleared for 10 miles here (92307 was already over 10 miles). It was now time to think about turning for home but I was at the wrong end of the train for the interchange to the Victoria Line at Oxford Circus. Before I could clear the platform, the next train had drawn up alongside me.

92113+92122+92208+92065 Oxford Circus to Shepherds Bush
Both of the outer ends cleared for 10 miles by the time I alighted at the Bush, 92208 was dud but 92122 ensured that the Fearsome Four became the Tremendous Trio. Yes, winner number two and only three 1992ts left (92022, 92046, 92246) which as far as I know are formed in three different sets

92207+92458+92056+92191 Shepherds Bush to Oxford Circus
92458 cleared 10 miles and I added to 92056’s mileage. The two outer sets were dud. Definitely time to head for home. This time I was at the correct end of the train.

Low mileage 11075+11076 took me to Stockwell and 51514 plus friend on to Morden and onwards to home. This gave me the opportunity to reflect on the evening’s haul. The highlight naturally being the two winners so hopefully future visits to the Central Line will see the Tremendous Trio falling into my sweaty hands – or better still, being recorded in The Haulage Book! But almost equally important was no less than 19 sets of 1992ts being cleared for ten miles although there’s still over 200 individual units left to deal with. It’s going to be fun getting all those!

I do like a bit of Central line, especially around the loop or far ends when the units are not as busy.

Congrats on getting 92106 & 92122 into the book :)

Only 3 left! A very productive evening considering how many Central line units there are! And congrats on 13!

Congratulations on getting your last DLR winner!

You've sure done well on the Central line sets too, to get down to just 3 more sets to score is impressive!

Sunday April 3rd – Take the Tram for a Pint

With my mate now suitably recovered to meet up for that pint we had originally arranged for the previous Thursday, we arranged to meet in the Spoons in Croydon. That suited both of us fine as I needed to do a spot of shopping as well and it would be a direct train journey for him – after all he’s not a basher but would certainly not fit into the category of a “normal”. I had the whole day to myself so I thought that I would combine a little tram bashing with the social in the Spoons (The George is conveniently located only a few paces away from the George Street tram stop on the Croydon loop).

The bus took me up to Morden Road Tram Stop – one of Sutton’s Optare Olympuses, all of which are totally dud many times over. The rest of the day will record the day’s moves one by one rather than in text.

2547 Morden Road to Centrale
We passed two Stadlers that were in service on the way, one of which I identified and it was a winner so I had to get that! Therapia Lane depot revealed only one Stadler visible – required 2556 which was obviously back from repairs [ED: that explains why you, KJ, have been fruitless in tracking it down on previous Tramplink visits].

2557 Centrale to Avenue Road
A low mileage tram but I could not go through to Beckenham Junction and back in order to clear it as I would miss out on the known winner.

2539 Avenue Road to Arena
Dud

2562 Arena to Sandilands
I decided to split the journey and risk the +0 onto my winner. 2562 was under the ten mile mark (and indeed still under 10 miles as I leapt off of it at Sandilands to dash over to the opposite platform) but at least it was much closer to the 10 mile mark now.

2561 Sandilands to New Addington
WINNER! On the way into Addington, I identified the other Stadler on route 3 which I had passed much earlier. I simply had to have a decent run or two with this 2561 so …

2561 New Addington to George Street
An hour or so ago, 2561 was required. Now it was elevated into the Ten Mile Club!

2562 George Street to East Croydon
2562 was only a minute or two behind 2561 so it would have been rude to refuse it, especially as it joined the Ten Mile Club

2544 East Croydon to George Street
Dud. Time to go shopping and then meet my mate in The George. As I was walking into The George, another winner rolled up but I left that for later. At least there was something to go for after our few pints. I walked into The George about 10-15 minutes before the appointed meet and my mate was already there! We had a great afternoon putting the world to rights and supping fine ales – for the ale buffs amongst you, I partook of Dark Star Original, Thornbridge Melba, Norseman Pale Ale and Crimson Rambler. Trooper 666 was showing as “available soon” which disappointed me as I always fancy this one but the Dark Star Original made up for the lack of Trooper 666.

2558 George Street to East Croydon
Dud but did not fancy the walk back up to ‘East.

2563 East Croydon to Arena (via Croydon Loop)
WINNER number two! It would take a while to clear this for 10 miles so I left that task for another day, especially as I would fall into an easy ten-miler at Arena

2557 Arena to George Street
2557 cleared for 10 miles and another ten-miler not far behind. But …

2563 George Street to Church Street
Only a Bus Stop Bash but at least another contribution towards the ten mile target.

2560 Church Street to Wimbledon
Cleared for 10 miles!
And then caught the bus home – yet another totally, completely dud Optare Olympus!

What of the day? The highlights obviously getting two winning trams so that means only 2556 to go and then all the Croydon trams will be sorted. Apart from elusive 2556, there’s only 2554, 2559 and 2563 needed for ten miles so hopefully I will sort those out soon. I managed to see all the workings and there were seven Stadlers out – I managed to ride on six with the seventh being totally dud 2555. 2556 was on the depot and I presume that 2554 and 2559 were also there but not visible.

Excellent work on the trams, so close to total clearance of the Croydon trams! Whereas I need 26 trams and the majority of the shacks!

Congratulations on clearing the DLR and knocking off another two of the Central line units! I think I said this before but I am still impressed by your intention to get at least 10 miles in the long term off everything!

Yes the admiration for Keith's major mission of getting 10 miles off everything is off the scale. Especially when it includes non-local fleets!

Tech, wanting 26 Croydon trams makes it sound so much better! What you really mean is that you've only had eight of the lovely things. Actually that surprises me, given your penchant for all things light rail
