Keighley & Worth Valley Through Ticket...

Northern Rail offer a through ticket to the KWVR which saves £4 off the price of the KWVR day rover ticket. The promotional leaflet says "even greater savings for railcard holders". It also says that you can buy the ticket from the conductor if you board at an unstaffed station.

On Tuesday a friend and I boarded at an unstaffed station and tried to purchase the through ticket. The conductor was unable to get his machine to issue the ticket with a railcard discount - in this case the Dales Railcard.
He was very apologetic and tried his best, including phoning for advice from elsewhere but the machine would not allow it.

Any ideas why not? Is it just a programming issue?

Just for clarity I have previously purchased the through ticket from a staffed station with a Dales Card.

Can you please confirm what journey you were intending to make? Which station did you board at? I shall look on my Avantix Mobile machine when next at work and see what it says. With SOME add on tickets to leisure attractions Avantix Mobile will not let you issue the ticket as a through ticket, requiring you to issue it as two separate tickets.

EDIT : As a volunteer at the KWVR I do get feedback on the through tickets occasionally. Recent feedback has been varied. Some people said they were offered it when they didn't know it existed, whilst one person tried to buy on board from somewhere up the S&C and was told no such through ticket existed and they had to buy separate tickets for the KWVR when they got to Keighley.

I will guess your origin is Appleby. If it is not the fares will be a bit different.

Therefore, it is cheaper to purchase separate tickets, using your railcards as far as Keighley.

Avantix Traveller says "Railcard not valid for destination. Error code: F122E" now that may be incorrect, but are you sure a Dales Railcard allows a discount on the KWVR? It appears not.

If you obtained such a discount before, was that a while back? The fares may have changed, or perhaps they gave you a discount to which you were not entitled?

Same applies as far as I can determine, just a little additional cost.

Previously purchased this offer ticket at the ticket office at Carlisle on 20 July. Used Dalescard and got discount. I paid £24.10 and still have the return portion of the ticket.

In that case the most likely explanation is that the Avantix mobile machines used by guards (I think Northern use Avantix?) and Avantix Traveller software are both wrong, but the system used at Carlisle station is correct.

This appear to be the case. I'm at work trying this on my Avantix Mobile machine at the moment and as the OP had in their situation, it will not allow the Dales Railcard discount to be applied to the through ticket. It will allow the discount on fares from Langwathby to Keighley, but not from Langwathby to Keighley & WVRLY. It will allow the discount for other Railcards to be applied (including some it shouldn't allow!) but not the Dales Railcard - which of course it should do. I have some contacts at Northern so will raise the matter with them - although don't expect anything to change anytime soon.

I suspect it is an error in the programming of Avantix. These faults do crop up from time to time. Interestingly, from Langwathby, Lazonby & Kirkoswald, and Armathwaite the Any Permitted fares to Keighley are cheaper than the Rte Appleby ones.
