Keighley to Crewe in December

Hi,

Going from Keighley (or Steeton and Silsden) to Crewe on Saturday 7th December, returning on the 8th.

Want to arrive by mid-afternoon, happy to leave any time from mid-morning (we're going to see a couple of bands).

There's two of us which gives us a fare of £84.80, or as it's otherwise known, my wife saying "I'll drive".

I've tried splitting at Leeds and Manchester to get TPE advances but it doesn't seem to make much difference to the price whilst restricting flexibility.

Manchester Pic to Crewe - 2xAnytime Returns £32.40p
Total £56.60p
Plus whatever the fares for 2 returns on the 500 bus from Keighley to Hebden Bridge.

Split at Manchester airport maybe. advance fares are available from keighley.

Saving not as great as Welshman's and it could go wrong if you get delayed on your way back to manchester airport.

They don't do period returns on the 500, but it'll cost effectively cost us a maximum of £2.10 each, each way as that's the difference between a single into Keighley and a day ticket.

Do you need to get another bus into Keighley? If so would a K-day or a Metro weekender help you?

For hebden bridge to manchester, there is a northern due at 13.50 for two adults. Unclear whether this is a day or period return

Yes - that's why I referred to the price of a day ticket - the K-Day.

Hmm, Brfares is unclear on the duration of validity for the Duo.

http://www.northernrail.org/tickets/Duo+tickets is (relatively) clear that a Northern Duo ticket is a Day Return ticket for 2 people, priced at 1.5 times the relevant Adult Day Return ticket, available on some of their routes.

Is a K-day still £3.80 or did it go up? It's still their 2012 fares online according to that link.

If it's >= £4 then a Metro weekender at £8 (each) is a better buy.

Indeed. It is still £3.80 - I'm usually fairly good with the local fares. Haven't had call to get a weekender yet though - I'm either not doing enough travel at a weekend or trains come into the mix.

Interesting, but unfortunately the Colne bus is decent on a Saturday (half hourly) but only runs every 2 hours on a Sunday - and the trains to Colne from Preston on a Sunday are also only every 2 hours - and just miss at Colne.

Pity about the Sunday buses not connecting with the trains at Colne. If you were going that way then I was wondering if Virgin were still allowing free 1st class upgrades to SOR ticket holders at weekends? If they are then 1st class on a Pendolino from Preston to Crewe would allow you to recover from the Colne to Preston torture experience by Pacer.

They were doing in March when I went to/from Glasgow. That got me brownie points with the wife and mother-in-law
