Hello

My friend is trying to find out the cheapest way to travel from Keighley to Glasgow return. Outward travel will be on Friday 5th August (departure after 0930) and return travel on Sunday 7th August, departure preferably some time late afternoon or early evening.

He is willing to travel via most routes, EXCEPT via Appleby (I am aware this is usually cheaper).

He says he would be happy to travel via ECML, via Manchester or via Preston.

He has a Disabled Persons Railcard, and also has a West Yorkshire Metro Concessionary pass (which means he can make a single journey between any two West Yorkshire stations for 50p)

Given the short timescales (and therefore lack of available advance tickets), would anyone be able to suggest relatively cheap options for him to consider?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can think of anything!

Oops. Sorry - I really should proof-read more carefully.

Yes - outward 5th August, return 7th August.

For a start, splitting is cheaper.

Keighley - Glasgow CEN/QST
Route Carlisle
Off-Peak Return
£53.60 DIS
Not valid before 0415 weekdays

Keighley - Glasgow CEN/QST
Route Leeds
Off-Peak Return
£59.20 DIS
Not valid before 0500 weekdays

An example of split:

Keighley - Carlisle
Route Any Permitted
Anytime Return
£29.55

Carlisle - Glasgow CEN/QST
Route Any Permitted
Off-Peak Return
£13.85
Not valid before 0900 weekdays

Total Cost: £43.40

There might be cheaper splits available.

I fear this split may not meet the OP's friend's requirements. It seems he wishes to travel via York, Manchester or Blackburn. The Keighley - Carlisle Route Any Permitted ticket is allowed via Appleby or Wennington only.

Calculation of Permitted Routes Keighley - Carlisle

Routeing Points (RPs) for Keighley are Bradford Group, Leeds Group and Hellifield Group.
Carlisle is a RP.
We need to perform a Fares Check to determine appropriate RPs for Keighley for this Keighley - Carlisle ticket. Undiscounted Standard Day Single fares are:
Keighley - Carlisle route Any Permitted £37.00
Bradford Yk Stns - Carlisle route Any Permitted £37.80. Therefore Bradford Group is not an appropriate RP for this journey.
Leeds - Carlisle route Any Permitted £40.10. Therefore Leeds Group is not an appropriate RP for this journey.
Hellifield - Carlisle route Any Permitted £19.70. Therefore Hellifield Group is an appropriate RP for this journey.
So appropriate RPs are Hellifield Group and Carlisle.
Hellifield Group - Carlisle has mapped Permitted Routes shown on Maps MM or NC.
Map MM allows Hellifield Group - Settle - Carlisle only.
Map NC allows Hellifield Group - Wennington - Lancaster Group - Penrith - Carlisle or Hellifield Group - Wennington - Lancaster Group - Workington - Carlisle.

It's going to cost a lot more to avoid going via Appleby. I would just get the Keighley-Glasgow Rte Appleby SOR at £31.40, which is valid in First Class on Virgin Trains on the return journey on Sunday 7th August.

To go via York is going to cost around twice the price.... unless there are Advance fares available.

Yes of course. That teaches me not to check the RG before posting. :(
