Does anybody have particularly strong thoughts about this Royal 'scandal'?

I'm sure I can't be the only person who feels that it's a lot of fuss over nothing, and it'll all blow over shortly? If the pair of them had been 'at it' then maybe it would be worthy of the outcry we've seen, but in reality - it's just a pair of boobs surely?!

To my mind it's nothing to do with the nudity and it's everything to do with the invasion of privacy. Whilst someone like Kate Middleton is clearly a public figure and should expect to be photographed, a lot, she still has some right to privacy. If she'd been on a public beach or another clearly public location then the pictures are fair game. Being on the grounds of a private house (well château ;)) is clearly not a public location and they should never have been taken let alone published. I wish them well with their attempt to sue the magazine.

I can only hope that the backlash will continue to spread and that we might see a reversal of all this 'cult of celebrity' nonsense that seems to have become so important to so many people. However, I don't hold out much hope :(

I would have preferred Pippa's a**e to be honest. ;)

I'm totally with Ainsworth on this one, a quick google search will find you the images (i won't post a link as i believe that this would violate the forum rules), they are of very poor quality and obviously taken from quite a distance away with a telephoto lens.
It is a clear cut, intentional invasion of privacy and i thing that their Royal Highnesses are right to be very annoyed about it.
As ainsworth also says they are public figures and they should expect to be photographed but as the French press seem to have a habit of doing they have gone to far again.

Seems hypocritical that we only care when it's the Royal Family and lap it up when it's a "lesser" celebrity. By we I mean the faux outrage by the tabloid press.

IMO such pictures are not acceptable of anyone in a private place but what can you do?

Begin to make it rather costly for the 'media' to publish such images by taking legal action?

A BBC reporter stated the other day that Court imposed damages under the French law typically could be EUR15,000. He thought it was more about drawing a line in the sand, and making clear that the Royals wouldn't stand and watch.

In a French court the maximum is EUR20,000, but what is the maximum in our courts?

I'm more concerned about why the photographer wasn't spotted. If they can take a photo then they can take a shot.

i have investigated the pictures carefully - they are taken with a drain pipe sized lens from the surface of Venus. They are nowt special

Not really, If you go for a very looonnnggg lens and a mahoosive crop factor on a high res sensor (what this seems to be) you can actually get the shot from longer distances than CoH Craig Harrison managed in perfect shooting conditions, realistically in a temprate climate being able to get a 1st shot kill you need to be within 1,000m, CoH Harrison needed 10 rounds to line up on windage for his shot, and you'd think by then that the royals would have, well, moved... ;)

Would be much easier to just get them while embussing or debussing...

Wasn't the Irish Daily Star the same one who published the pictures of Prince Harry in Las Vegas claiming they did it in honour of the leaders of the 1916 Eeaster Rising?

Several thoughts came into my mind when this kicked off:

1. Why all the fuss about a naked body?
2. Are the Royals and their advisors so naive that they don't realise that these types of shots are possible?
3. Hang on, I don't care what happens to a French publication anyway!

Of course, I know this is all about privacy and it is being played out against the backdrop of the Leverson Inquiry. But as far as I'm concerned it's a fuss about nothing.

Matters of royal protocol did not seem to occur to the King Edward VII when he was the Prince of Wales, much to the despair of Queen Victoria.

Princess Margaret was not exactly the epitomy of discretion, much to the despair of Queen Elizabeth II and The Queen Mother.

I would think it might be a generational thing, but how does that fit in with Prince William's legal action?

Nudity and partial nudity is far more acceptable now than it was in the past!

You could say the same about phone hacking, as I said of the issue at the time, anyone is welcome to hack into my phone if I get thousands of pounds in compensation :p

I don't care much whether it's a royal, a minor celebrity or anyone else. If people are going to take their clothes off, some other people are going to want to have a look, whoever they are.

And I don't care if the subject is on private property or not. As long as the photographer is on public property it's fair game.

Such a non-story this - I went down the google route earlier and I have to say the tits concerned are most unremarkable. Now, shall we move on?

I think the main reason why people are in a bit of a who-ha about this could be because of a fear of another "Princess Diana" happening.

As far as I'm concerned, they are entitled to their privacy, regardless of who they are. I've no sympathy for anyone who breaches it.

Good point about whoever took the photo could have also taken a shot. The only difference I can think of is that whereas knowledge of the photos was not instant, the repercussions of a shooting would have been.

Is it fair game though? If the photographer was on the street using a large telephoto lens to look into peoples bedrooms would that be ok?

Would you be happy if your neighbor kept constantly peering over your fence everyday taking photos of your mrs sun bathing or doing gardening etc etc or would you get slightly annoyed at it?

No, they can do what ever they like as long as they stay out of my garden. The fact is that I wouldn't know what they were doing if they were taking pics from a long distance anyway. Or doing it from inside their bedroom, for example.

As for our bedrooms and living rooms, that's why we have curtains!

In my opinion it's the idea that the Royal's deserve some special privacy that annoys me, I feel that it should either be equally as bad to publish topless pics of Kate as it is of someone like Imogen Thomas, or it should just be off limits to publish pictures of anyone topless.

Should the phrase "deference to royalty" have any meaning in the 21st century ?

I would be particularly worried if she did not possess breasts, which amazingly enough are something possessed by the vast number of the females in the species Homo Sapiens Sapiens.

She seems to be normal in this respect.

However a lot of the Page 3 models, like Imogen Thomas, give permission for those photos of them topless to be published and pose for them, with the full knowledge of their purpose. The Duchess of Cambridge obviously didn't.

With the amount of cigarettes you smoke I expect you hack into your own phone plenty. ;)
