Thinking about going here next week and am looking for advice/suggestions. I'm planning to go out by rail via European Sleeper if it's not sold out or another sleeper.

What's the traction situation like around there? Also, how much buffer should I leave at Prague before a booked train to Karlovy Vary to allow for ES delays?

Can you even get a booked-train-only fare at short notice?
Anyway, if it's delayed the ES stops at Decin, and it's only a short hop to Usti n.L to connect with the Karlovy Vary route.

Your best bet for traction info is https://sledovani.55p.cz/ though I can't make it translate to English ATM.
https://www.vagonweb.cz/razeni/ is also useful but not yet fully updated for 24-25.
Or you could join https://groups.io/g/cdgen where there have been lots of recent posts about the timetable change and traction issues.
Be aware that class 193 Vectrons are now dominant on express services.

Otherwise, the route south from KV to Marianske Lazne is scenic.

Right at the other end of the country, so not really relevant, but farewells to non-ETCS classes on the routes going East from Prague will be happening at the end of the year, and no doubt there are other specials.

Prague-Karlovy Vary: not worth booking a fixed train in advance. Walk-up appears to be CZK 486, roughly GBP 15. You might save half of that booking a month ahead but it’s probably still about 10% off on the day.

If you want to buy rapidly on the go for CD download their Muy Vlak app in advance. Where it’s not CD or it’s a cross-operator journey in Czechia download OneTicket.

Edit: just remembered that you can change or refund CD fixed-train tickets up to 15 minutes before departure. So to save a few pounds you can, just have the app or web site so you can change it as the sleeper gets later.
