This actually means in real terms you passed all the assessments but unfortunately there were better candidates for the position. You will be on standby in case one of the candidates fails the medical, 1 in 3 fail the medical on average by the way and this is what we allow when putting people forward, if all pass the medical which can happen then even then those who did not score so well in the tests will go on standby. It is a bitter pill to swallow. All the tests and interview are mark graded and if there is a candidate with a better mark he or she will get the position. I did a recruitment drive for 2 positions, had 600 applicants, 60 went to the test centre, 18 passed all the tests, 11 passed the interviews and we only put forward 6 for medical (7 on satnd by), 3 passed the medical so one went on standby, the one on standby was employed 4 weeks later. The 7 on standby were contaced 6 months later for another interview for another 3 positions and 3 got the job. Don't give up as you never know, some will fail the medical, I actually had one trainee that didn't turn up for his induction believe it or not.
For anyone reading this pending an interview most people fail the interviews as they do not answer the question asked and ramble on about other things, listen to the question and answer it honestly, I had one candidate and I asked him a question that was related to his application form and he answered it completely different than on the form he sent in a month before.
