Just Eat Service Charge

I was reading earlier in the Telegraph that Just Eat are to bring a "Service Charge" of 50p to those who order takeaways and pay cash on their website

Apparently it is to bring it in line with the orders paid for by card according to sources, however it is to be brought in on the 13th January, the same day that a new EU directive comes into power banning card payment charges.

I certainly will be avoiding these people as they do a method which in effect circumnavigates EU legislation by putting charges on someone who just wants to pay in paper for a takeaway.

I'm not entirely sure how Just Eat's business model works - do take-aways have to pay a certain fee in order to appear on their app/website? I've only ever used the app once or twice, and to be fair, 50p seems like a fairly small sum of money to pay for the convenience that it offers.

I live in a small village some 7 miles outside the nearest town, and before Just Eat appeared it was almost impossible to get any deliveries at all. Those take-aways that did always slapped on a fairly hefty charge for delivery, so it was only ever worthwhile if you had a few people clubbing together to place an order. I don't expect free delivery due to the distance, but delivery charges have fallen remarkably, and I also have a much wider choice of places to order from. That in itself is worth 50p.

Just Eat don't really do that much at all, apart from providing a shop-front and getting people used to the idea of delivery. Admittedly outside of cities that is an important innovation, but around here it hasn't even stemmed the tide of menus through the door. The order just goes to the restaurant who then handle all the prep and delivery. The only time Just Eat offer any customer service is if the restaurant isn't answering the phone and they've taken the payment. I'm not sure what the commercial relationship is between the restaurant and Just Eat, but I reckon when they started a lot of the restaurants round here used to do free delivery if you called or £1.50 if you used Just East

If they put a 50p charge on I'll probably just switch back to using the phone instead, or start using Deliveroo more since they actually manage the delivery, and offer tracking through the whole transaction. Hell, I might even go back to collecting.

Just Eat takes a set percentage of each order as commission. It used to be 13% of each order but that could have changed. Pretty sure they also have an admin fee for each billing period too.
