Walked to Milton Keynes Central yesterday morning in plenty of time for a queue at the ticket office (wanted any permitted day returns so we can use LNR or Avanti and find it easier to buy these from the ticket office) and intending catching an Avanti at c8:50.

No queue so tickets purchased quickly and saw that the LNR 8:35 1Y10 ex BHM via Northampton hadn't left so scurried down the stairs and onto the train to hear an announcement along the lines of "If there is a member of the police on board please can they make their way to coach 5".

Found a seat and shortly another announcement that the train wouldn't be leaving until a disruptive (can't remember the exact term used) passenger had been removed from the train. Very shortly afterwards train departed (RTT says it was 08:38) followed by an announcement apologising for the delay and to passengers in coach 5 who had had to experience the bad language and behaviour. No idea what the altercation had been about but the person making the announcements sounded very calm and professional. Train arrived at Euston dead on time.

Returned to Euston around 17:15 and looked at the departure board to see when the next fast-ish train was to MKC.

17:23 LNR showing an 8 car and awaiting platform number while there was an Avanti to Liverpool first stop MKC at 17:41 again awaiting platform.

The 17:23 (1Y55 I think) then changed from an 8 car to a 4 car and platform number appeared and we decided to go for it. Chap telling everyone to only board the front four coaches and we could see as we walked past that the back four had been decoupled. We got seats in the very front coach but it was standing all down the aisle for later arrivals and announcements being made that if one couldn't get on the train to remain on the platform.

Set off, with announcements apologising for the overcrowding all along the route. As we left Bletchley an announcement was made again apologising for the overcrowding and saying that an extra four coaches would be added to the train at Northampton. I see from RTT that they appear to have done this quickly at NMP and the train was only +2 when it arrived in Birmingham.

So well done to all concerned yesterday :)

So glad I don't travel in the London area! I thought standing was a thing of the past, but it seems to be creeping back as more and more people discover the delights of rail travel v road.

You don’t need to be in the London area - Cross Country travel to the Southwest is frequently similar.

In my recent experience, XC outside the Southwest can also be similar, especially when you lock out 4 cars of 8 car train in mid-journey and tell the passengers in that unit to fit into the remaining coaches. I've seen this happen twice in the last couple of weeks, once at Derby and once at Newcastle.

My limited experience (in autumn the last three years) suggests any main line trains north of York can also be very, very busy.

Just great to see so many using rail, although if I was a harried conductor/guard I might have a different view.
