Junction Lighting

I see that Network Rail have started to light up major junctions, Edge Hill has recently been done, Basford Hall is next.
What does this achieve apart from the obvious

Completely cocking up drivers' night vision whenever they travel through
Waking up pax trying to sleep by timing bright lights with the clackety clack of points.

What sort of lights ? the only ones I have seen at junctions are the LED type on short poles for when there are possessions on.

They're only switched on when doing night time inspections. A lot of light is needed to adequately inspect the minutiae of S&C. "24/7" railway and all that jazz...

The one's at BH are waist height, they were due to be piled in last night but erm... shall we say thieves stole all the hydraulic cables from the machines

Engineering work during the hours of darkness requires lighting. Setting this up and dismantling occupies time which cannot be used productively, and incurs cost. Therefore fixed lighting in some locations can be a better option.

Makes it easier for the metal thieves to pick and choose what to pinch, a bit like gazing into a jewellers sparkling shop window!!!
