July and August 16-25 exemption

Apologies if this is a foolish question, but please could someone explain to me how the July and August exemption to minimum fares effects ticket prices.

As I would understand it, the removal of a 'minimum fare' would negate the difference between peak and off-peak train times, as this appears to be the payments which defines them... or am I barking up the wrong tree?

In short; would an 'off-peak' ticket be valid during peak hours during August? Or would using one result in an on-train penalty fee?

The minimum fare is before 10am Mon-Fri not including July and August, and is priced at £12. There is no minimum fare in July and August, but this does not change the restrictions on the ticket such as when you can use it (peak/off-peak etc.)

Seems odd given that the minimum fair appears to be the only thing which determines the peak label.

I have bought off-peak returns from Stockport - London with a railcard and been advised by the ticket seller that I can use it on ANY train, before 10am or otherwise, but from Leeds - London this rule doesn't seem to apply?

No you could only use it on Virgin Trains between Stockport and London (OK - you're unlikey to do different).

This is because Virgin have an easement that allows Railcard holders to travel on a peak service on an off peak ticket.

There is no such easement on the East Coast.

The removal of the minimum fare simply means you can travel on any train and get a railcard discount on the correct ticket for that journey, even if made before 10am and the fare after discount is less than £12.

Mayb you should suggest to Virgin and suggest they remove their 'ridiculous' easement then!
