I’m looking forward to my first 196 score.
The no biscuits for a month challenge sounds very interesting; I’ve not had biscuits for months but it’d be very funny to see how long I could last a no Red Bull for a month challenge. Not very well I assume.

165s are sadly the new normal for Marylebone Oxford. I remember when I cleared most of GWR HSTs/Turbos and XC using a Cherwell Ranger, and I’d often end up at Oxford several times in the day and pop to Parkway too for a 168 win. 165s were very rare on the route then.

Hi all,

Well today is the day I take off for the USA! I'll reveal the destination in the trip report, which will go live tonight. My signal at Heathrow is awful, but I just had to share the epic meal I had at Wagamama, Heathrow Terminal 5. Absolutely incredible, expensive but it will be money oh so well spent!

There's nothing living at the back of my throat after that carrot and ginger smoothie, that's for sure! The yasai katsu curry main, as always, was amazing  The vegetable dumplings, they were OK but not as good as the vegan-friendly teriyaki steamed buns that I usually have. At least I know that now! The smoothie was good, not my first choice but definitely worth trying.

Next is a power walk to the C gates, I've not had much exercise today after all, then onto BA275 :D

I had a wonderful breakfast from that Wagamama before flying to Iceland in October, of an Asian style omelette with countless different types of vegetables, chicken, ENORMOUS prawns and more delights. It was brilliant - and always remember green tea there is free and unlimited :D

D5F24C42-BEB0-4073-B566-9A900FADDD7E.jpeg This was it. Mine of course wasn’t vegan friendly having prawns and chicken in it, but there was an option for just veg.
EDIT: What on earth am I saying, an omelette’s made from eggs

Heathrow Terminal 5 is by far my favourite place to fly from. Criminal to walk to the C Gates though as the shuttle is all part of the pre-flight anticipation!

You’ve exposed the destination by revealing the number. I know where 275 flies ;) I’ll keep quiet for you so as not to ruin it, but that will be a fantastic trip and I’m especially looking forward to seeing the aircraft, one I haven’t flown. You’re of course flying with the best airline.

I wish you a very pleasant safe flight and look forward to the report tonight - or in the morning, as it’ll be for me. I’ll read it during the lecture, as it’s bound to be more interesting than “Digital Media Placemaking in The Modern Age”

Hope you get a good view of the planets aligning, and/or Greenland, from your A350. Bit of a gamble flying with BA though ;)
You've gone and spoilt it! :o
I'm quite envious that you get to try the A350, Tech, and I cannot wait to see pictures from inside.

That said, the BA A380 top deck was the most spacious economy experience I've had so far, and I'm delighted to have flown that to LA (and I'll fly that back from Texas in June) 777s dominate both routes, so I was delighted to have avoided those. Airbus for the win :D

Sorry to disappoint you both, but 1) I have only one photo from the inside of the A350 and 2) I was so busy watching movies at my aisle seat that I didn't get to see anything out of the window anyway. Almost everyone seemed to prefer to have their blinds down for some reason too, on a night flight like I'm on in 50 hours or so time I can perfectly understand that. On a daytime flight then I'd have my blind up if I was by the window!

I took 102 photos today, and right now I'm letting the poor feet rest after a big adventure. The hotel pool is calling me, I think I will have to go to it shortly! Not much point having these facilities included in the hotel fees and not use them!

EDIT: Attached are some photos from my rather nice hotel room. The Sheraton in Zagreb is still my favourite, but this one is a close second I'd say!

Hope it has free WiFi, I remember the hotel I had in Vegas 10 years ago (Golden Nugget) wanted something silly like $15 dollars for 24 hours access. I guess the theory is people don't spend long in the rooms and more time gambling.

Thankfully it does, well it's included in the resort fee at least. $50 per day for that, some of which is thankfully being refunded due to the lack of availability of some of the hotel features.

I'm currently having my first coffee of the day, then I'm going out for a couple of hours to do a little bit more. Started my gift shopping, including a gift for the 2023 festive season! Unless the weather is as rancid in the UK as it was when I left there! Before I go out, only for a bit as I then need to get ready for the pickup for my sightseeing tour, here's a few more photos. Days 1 and 2 are typed, awaiting review before I post them.

What a beautiful hotel room.
Air Mauritius and Qantas forced me to close the blinds even during the day flights I flew with them so people could sleep, which infuriated me. If people want to sleep, they can close their windows, but I should be able to do with mine what I want!

Oh! That seat looks rather thin actually. I should be interested to know how comfortable you found it for what is quite a long flight.

You have become even further apart from me in terms of time difference, as while it's 8am on Wednesday for you, it's now 2am on Thursday for me

Oh wow, we are a fair way apart in times then! I'm coming to you live from the Sahara Hotel, as the weather's gone pretty rubbish and my sightseeing tour to one of the greatest places on Earth has been cancelled due to the weather. I'm fed up of this horrible city of ill repute, which I never wanted to visit but kind of had to for the tour. So I've made the best of it, but I'm out of things to do except for the monorail and seeing the place all lit up at night. I'm doing both of those tonight, after which I have literally nothing I want to do. As of right now, I have a massive 31 hours to fill until takeoff, if I could I'd be on a flight out of here in the morning instead.

Anyway, enough of me moaning, I'll have enough of the ranting and so on in the trip report. At least I have time to get it all reviewed and posted eh? The A350 seat, yes they are quite thin and I found my shoulders in particular didn't like the seat too much. Now I've sampled the A350, I think I'd rather a 777 to be brutally honest. I'd also happily take a 787!

Harsh with the crap weather cancelling the helicopter flight to the GC :'(

Tell me about it, I'm absolutely gutted. The whole tour included the sightseeing plane, helicopter ride, a pontoon boat along the river and visits to two viewing areas. I'm due all my money back, which at $554 is a lot of money I won't have to pay off my credit card, but what hits hard is the £974 the flights and hotel to Las Vegas cost. I didn't want to do Vegas, it's not a place I feel good about being in, but I made the best of it. I didn't mind so much as it meant I got to do the Grand Canyon, but now I will have to spend similar money again in the future, and it will be a long time until I get the time off work required.

I'm hearing the weather's been rubbish in the UK, so I'm glad I've missed that, but I just want to return to the UK ASAP! I have attached some photos from today, the Met Office app screenshot shows just how much the wind was getting up. No way would one want to be in a fixed-wing craft or a helicopter in that. Quite, I didn't enjoy walking in it!

Not sure if you are still there but one really good value thing is this:

http://www.pinballmuseum.org/

Take a bus 104 south to SB Las Vegas after Russell and (somehow) cross the road to the Pinball sign on the front of the museum. A fist full of quarters can give a couple of hours maybe on all types of pinball machines.

That sounds like it will be worth investigating :) I've now finished reviewing Day 1, so I'm including it here. Next is reviewing Day 2, on which I took 102 photos, then type up today and look at doing the monorail in a bit. I've had a ton of junk food in the room, so at least I'm not hungry now!

@TT-ONR-NRN I forgot to reply about the transit thing, I've done it before and I prefer to get my walk on instead. It's not much slower, and indeed if you end up with waiting a while for the transit I can actually end up at the other end quicker! I don't think the option exists for arrival at the B or C gates, which is a shame because after a long flight a good bit of walking would be seriously welcome!

27/03/2023 - Juliano vs Miley Cirus - Juliano's In The USA, Day 1

Hello and welcome to the first part of a massive trip report! This has been a long, long, time coming and it features one of my wishlist destinations. Originally, when I had got the time off granted, I'd looked to go to New Zealand, but this was just after a cyclone had hit the country hard. So much so it was under a state of emergency for only the third time in the country's existance. I didn't feel right about going there in such circumstances, so I looked at my alternative options. I had plenty to choose from in mainland Europe and in the UK, but nothing excited me enough to book. I also looked at my first visit to one of the world's most popular cities for coffee culture, Seattle, as well as a revisit to New York. Both were good options, no question of it, but I had a better idea.

After many hours of deciding, looking up all my options etc, I got my ESTA approved and the next day I finally made my decision and booked a flights and hotel package with British Airways. £974 later, I was all booked to Las Vegas with a 4 star hotel for 3 nights and 3 full days of exploring!

Now I must say straight away that I don't do gambling, so I'd be steering clear of all that stuff. One benefit of being teetotal is that I won't want to go near the bars and nightclubs either! The reason for booking to Las Vegas then? It was by some way the most convenient place to base oneself for the wishlist destination, one of the natural wonders of the world. You know where I'm talking about right? Yes, I was finally going to visit the mighty Grand Canyon!

Waiting for this trip was a little different, in that I had a week off before it and that had been allocated to family time, as well as some minor UK trips. In the end, that didn't happen as my sister came down with Covid, and I did a number of little adventures on my to-do list instead. The day finally came around, and at 0245 I woke up 2 hours ahead of my alarm. Thankfully, I managed a little bit of to-and-fro sleep until 0425, and slowly I got ready to go. It was still 0547 before I was on the move with my heavy case, which was packed for just about every sort of weather possible. As I was likely to be away from base for 7 days, I had to pack for all sorts!

I had originally wanted to go to London by rail, but the fare asked for was just too much at nearly £48 one way. I booked National Express to London instead at £11.10, a much better price and yes it takes longer but it would involve less faff than the best option the railway could give me. They couldn't confirm the timetable on the £48 fare, so I didn't think it was wise to spend that sort of money and not know what time I'd arrive. Granted, that issue could easily apply to the coach, what with unknown traffic levels etc, but I felt it was the best option. My preferred option would be a First Class journey to London Paddington and connect into Heathrow Express, but that was not an option this time!

With some slow traffic out of Cheltenham, it was a routing via the A417 and M4 on this journey. I personally prefer the route via the A40 and M40, but I hadn't done the M4 in a long time so it was a nice change. The joining of that a little to the east of Swindon was at 0855, that was a long 55 minutes from departure at Cheltenham Royal Wells Bus Station! I was wanting to be at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 by 1350, when bag drop was due to open for my flight. That shouldn't prove too tough, as I was due to arrive at London Victoria Coach Station at 1050. The plan in London was simply to get food and coffee, then make my way to the airport. I love spending time in London, but today I had places I needed to be. A proper visit is long overdue!

1008 and I was on the A4 into London, I was nearly in the capital, and by now the stomach was reminding me that it likes food. Breakfast had been around 5 hours prior to that point, and I had planned a visit to Pure at London Victoria's mainline station. A lot of very slow running got us to the river at 1043, and I finally reached the coach station in glorious weather at 1055, 5 minutes late. En-route to Victoria Station, I picked up a Pret coffee to find that almost all catering options have been eliminated. No more Pure at Victoria, and nothing of any real interest to me, so I voted with my feet and went for a bus to Paddington. I had considered the Piccadilly line to Heathrow, but I saw a notice saying the Piccadilly was part-suspended. "OK then, I'm not getting caught up in that" which led me to Route 36 to Queens Park.

Go-Ahead's E254, YX12 FPL for those curious, was in charge of getting me to the best London terminus. Once there, I ended up in Sainsburys Local for an Alpro vanilla yoghurt and a banana for lunch. Some awesome sounding vegan chocolate was on offer for £2, that will get sampled before too long! By the time that was devoured, it was 1201 and I had discovered it was the Uxbridge line that was disrupted. No problem for me then, but now I had to choose between a 345 to Heathrow, a 345 to Slough and then a bus, Heathrow Express or taking the Piccadilly line to Heathrow. All sounded like reasonable choices!

After sourcing another Pret, originally planned for my onward journey, I went to buy a Heathrow Express ticket. In my opinion, it's the best way to arrive at Heathrow. The app refused to work, and the ticket machine refused to take my payment, so I took that as a sign to do something else. I had no memory of doing an S7 to Hammersmith, so I decided to correct that. It's a mighty long walk from the other LU area! Once on the platform, there was an enormous 12 minute wait for a westbound train, and sadly my last S7 wanted was not out today. Duds 21516+21515 took me to Hammersmith, then across the road I went to join the Piccadilly line.

Dud after dud after yet more duds rolled in, with only one set wanted on a northbound train observed in around 20 minutes! By now I just wanted to get to Heathrow, so joined duds 217+862 to Hatton Cross. Why there? Well, following changes to the free travel zone at Heathrow on the Piccadilly line, going all the way from Zone 1 currently charges £5.60, whereas if you tap out at Hatton Cross then tap in on another card, you get the free journey on the second card. The first one gets charged £3.50, which is an enormous saving. By the time the train got to Boston Manor, it was already 1330. Bag drop at Terminal 5 was due to open for my flight at 1350, so I was not too concerned yet, but with a lengthy stop for a driver change at Acton Town already and an unexplained long stop at Boston Manor, I was starting to get very frustrated!

At Hatton Cross, on the stairs heading to street level seemed a well placed poster given the trip report title. Good to know Miley Cirus is still around, the poster being for her new album. Back downstairs after a short break, where I had a quick look at an information board about the London Loop walk which gave me an idea for the future, I had a number of minutes waiting for a train to Terminal 5. In my view, arriving at Heathrow on the Piccadilly line is one of the least dignified ways of doing so, and this just proved it! At least this journey showed me that Pure is at Hammersmith station on the Piccadilly line, noted for the future.

Taking me to Terminal 5 was dud 205 and winner 874. I arrived at about 1400, and two of 4 barriers were not working properly so it took some time to get upstairs and to check-in. Straight upstairs I went to bag drop, I wanted to get airside quickly to soak up the atmosphere of Heathrow! 1426 and I was all done, surprisingly my case was only just over 11kg, and security wasn't terribly fast but it could have been worse. After a quick walkabout to get some plane registrations noted at some of the A gates, my stomach was reminding me that it wanted feeding. Originally I was going to Itsu, and I figured I'd see what the Gordon Ramsay place offered on their menu. Nothing any good to me, that was deduced quickly, and I went to Wagamama instead. I've done the Wagamama at Terminal 3 in 2022, just over a year ago at that, so this was technically my second win of the day. On a day where not much was going my way, it was therefore a nice treat to get a seat right next to the kitchen.

My order usually doesn't change in Wagamama, but I decided to try the vegetable dumplings instead of the vegan-friendly teriyaki steamed buns this time. I *love* the steamed buns, I would happily eat them this time too but when looking at the menu I was reminded of a time in 2022, when one of my friends (in a banter-like manner) dared me to try something new in a restaurant we'd not been to before. So I went with the gut feeling, and listened to my good friend's subliminal messaging! I also tried a different smoothie this time, the 'carrot cleanse' one, which is basically carrot juice and ginger. Quite the strong ginger taste, it must be said, and it wouldn't be my first choice but worth trying. I got the dumplings second, so I prioritised the yasai katsu curry meal. That was awesome as always, and the dumplings were OK but not amazing, I'd stick to the buns next time.

Overall, that meal was well worth £25.70 and I had arrived at a good time, as the queue for seats got long at times. After a most welcome fantastic meal, and probably the healthiest food I'll have until I return to the UK, it was 1535 so it was time for a power walk along the transit walkway. From level -4 where the lift dropped me off to the bottom of the escalators at the other end, it took me just 6 minutes, a far superior way for me to get to the C gates!

Some more walking around to admire the 'big birds' of the British Airways fleet, these being aircraft such as the mighty Boeing 777 and the Airbus A380, and some food was sourced from Boots in case the food on board was not worth eating. Eventually I was on board, with very loud boarding music and a lot of noisy passengers, and I took seat 46C, an aisle seat on G-XWBF, an Airbus A350. Boarding complete a little after 1700, and pushback was had at 1710. Boarding had been delayed by safety checks, but we were now good to go. After a manual safety brief, we got to the taxi-ing to the runway, and finally it was into the air at 1731.

So what were my first impressions of the Airbus A350? Well thankfully it's 3-3-3, that is 3 seats on the left, 3 in the middle and 3 on the right in the majority of World Traveller rows. I'd still hate to be in the middle seat though! My general rule is to be on an aisle seat on long-haul flights, primarily because I don't like having to try and squeeze past people to get to/from my seat. Given it's exceptionally rare for me to be asleep on a flight, I'm happy to move in and out when required for others. The headrest has wings that fold in and out, and it was surprisingly comfortable. The seat is OK, but I'd appreciate more padding for comfort, especially around the shoulders. The in-flight entertainment (IFE) looked good at a quick glance, I'd try it out more as the flight went on. At-seat power was available, which I'd use later on as I'd managed to go from 100% to 66% between the coach and sitting down on the flight!

A little over an hour into flight, I received my pre-ordered vegan meal. I had no idea what to expect, but it was overall really good! The main was a ratatouille with basmati rice, I couldn't tell you what was in that ratatouille but it tasted decent enough. There was a twin pack of wholegrain crackers too, they were highly recommended and the pistachio cake wasn't too bad either. The little round pot, with what I had expected was granola but was nothing of the sort, tasted a bit like cous-cous, cold at that, with an unidentified white sauce and tasted unpleasant. After struggling to swallow the first mouthful of that, I gave up with it. The bread roll and sunflower spread were decent though, so I had almost all of the food. I was still glad that I'd not relied on that meal though, I'd have not been satisfied enough with that. Overall, a better meal than expected, although it's worth noting that while I got my meal ahead of the regular meal service, I then had to wait a long time for my tray to be collected!

I enjoy watching movies on long flights, and it's probably just as well given the alcohol had already got to some of the passengers. Many of whom were clearly going to Las Vegas to get heavily drunk. My first movie of the flight was Secret Headquarters starring Owen Wilson, and it wasn't too bad. Certainly better than a lot of movies I've seen in the past, and my next choice might be questionable to many. On my way to Tokyo back in November 2019, I watched Frozen to see what the fuss was all about. In front of me was Frozen 2, and it was tempting to see what it was like. However, first I was also curious to see what the sequel to Wonder Woman was like. So that, at around 2.5 hours, seemed like a good one to watch first. I have to say I quite enjoyed it too, I'd sure recommend Wonder Woman 1984.

Let's quickly discuss the restrooms, they're a decent size for an aircraft, with bigger sinks than I'm used to onboard which is a bonus. Otherwise they're your average restroom, and I must mention legroom next. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was very reasonable, I had no issues and plenty of space between the seat in front and my knees. The map screen is quite a cool feature, although I thought the A350 was supposed to have cameras on the vertical stabliser? I didn't find that, which is a shame.

With 3 hours of the flight remaining, I enjoyed watching Frozen 2. Before the flight was halfway over, it got really chilly so I was glad a blanket was available. I've not had that desire on a daytime flight before, that's a weird one! Time for a short break from movies, and my planespotting needed checking off in my book, so that was next on my list of things to do. 8 new BA sights and 1 Cathay Pacific noted, there's still a fair few of BA's bigger craft to get for sight but that was good progress through them. 3 movie scores as well, and it has to be said I was getting frustrated by people's smelly feet and by being sat in one place for so long!

Around 2 hours and 20 minutes before the flight was due to end, I received my second meal. It was delivered as a reduced gluten chicken and potato main though, which got returned and I received the vegan option which was a 3 bean Mexican chill and couscous, so unidentified cold pot which had a bit of sweetcorn and peas, and what I'm guessing was meant to be a vegan version of a lemon cheesecake. I wasn't impressed by it at all, if that's what counts as food in Mexico then you can 100% count me out of going there! I ate it, bar the cold pot thing, but it wasn't really worth having. The first meal was surprisingly good, this one lived up to the expectations. I expected this sort of thing coming out of the USA, not going into it!

At 1908 (now on GMT-8), I finished my 4th movie of the flight, Bad Boys For Life. Shortly after that, the seatbelt light went back on (I tend to wear mine whenever seated anyway) and I had survived the long flight. Quite, it was almost 24 hours since I'd got out of bed at that point, so I'm sure you can imagine how tired I was and keen to get to the hotel! Immigration and baggage reclaim still needed to be cleared yet, plus the bus into Las Vegas itself. I had a feeling I might miss breakfast and not rise until nearly lunchtime!

It was back onto the ground at 1935 and parked up at the terminal at 1944, 14 minutes late. 1957 and I joined a lengthy looking queue for passport control, and which got quite long behind me too so I was fortunate not to be at the back of the A350! I was finally out of there and into baggage reclaim at 2027, and outside at 2036. Eventually I gave up trying to find the bus stop for Route 108 buses, and asked at an information desk. I had to go to Terminal 1 first, and it was thankfully only a short wait for a breadvan-sized bus around the maze of roads.

On the ticket machines, the cheapest option I found was a 2 hour pass for $6. I thought there were cheaper options, but this would have to do, and it was less than the estimated $20 taxi fare anyway. When I checked on Google recently, it suggested the journey would be best done on Route 108 and leave at 2113, so I still had more than 15 minutes to wait. 15633 rolled in to take me into Las Vegas itself, and upon boarding I needed to swipe my ticket through the machine to validate it. I'm pretty sure I saw these buses are powered by natural gas, which is pretty cool.

2139 and I joined the lengthy queue for check-in at Sahara Hotel. All I was caring about now was getting to bed, and of course the queue was not moving fast! Eventually I got to my beautiful room at 2204, all the way up on the 24th floor. I even splashed out $7.99 on some vegan chocolate in the hotel shop, I was exhausted and wanted a bit of something nice to finish the day. That was a seriously long day, close to 26 hours of being out of bed as of the typing of this!

OK then, here's Day 2 as well. Day 3 should go up later tonight, at least this time I'm not weeks behind on sharing the report! I have way too many photos to share, for now I'll include a very limited selection.

28/03/2023 - Juliano vs Miley Cirus - Juliano's In The USA, Day 2

0345 and I was awake, after around 4 hours of heavy sleep, which I wasn't expecting. Let's talk about the room then! I had a huge and surprisingly comfortable king bed, with way too many pillows and huge cushions. There was an enormous TV, hair dryer, safe, lots of storage space, two big chairs and a huge window. The bathroom was huge, but it was an accessible room so understandably so. It had apparently been recently renovated, which explained why it looked different to the photos on the hotel website. In a good way, as this was a nice looking room. There was also a small fridge, two complimentary bottles of water but, frustratingly in my view, no kettle. I had an enormous desk, and lots of large mirrors, but no kettle. I was disappointed to say the least, thankfully there are options in the hotel and a Starbucks is just a couple of minutes' walk away. So until I could encourage myself to get up and try the shower out, what was the view like?

Actually, not too bad. Not the greatest, but I have certainly woke up to worse. Of course, I wasn't exactly rushing to get ready for a full day of exploring yet, Starbucks was not likely to be open that early and I needed to do some route planning. I've fallen foul of the 'it doesn't look far on the map, I can walk that' in the past. Tokyo in 2019 certainly was a good example of that, I did it but it was a hard day of exploring! Many options for the day were researched, and I came across both a bike-share scheme and some cycle shops offering hire bikes. One was 11 miles away, no chance of me getting there even by public transport too easily. Bike Blast Vegas was much closer, and I found myself signing up for the RTC Bike Share scheme. I got myself a $5 pass, and there was a bike bay near the hotel. I think you know what I was planning to do!

The forecast was calling for amazingly sunny weather, which was a big plus. Sadly, no space on the guided cycle tours until day 4 of my trip when I looked online, and I didn't necessarily fancy going for a solo ride in a country I've never cycled in! In the city of Las Vegas, that felt both scary but exciting enough to dive in, and yes I'd anticipated some potential cycling on this adventure so I even brought a helmet with me!

The shower in my room was very good, I could have done with a little extra pressure to really burn off the long first day's sweats but I still felt much better. After that and the unpacking, I had some food with YouTube on to help push me into exploring mode. As I typed this, it was 0603 and I still hadn't had coffee yet, so that was priority number 1! I was finally on the move at 0643, and I found Starbucks in the hotel before that but felt it was quite likely I'd have to pay a premium for that. However, the one nearby was drive-through only, so I went to 7-Eleven and got a large coffee there instead. Which was no bad thing, I enjoyed my coffee from one of their branches in LA in 2020, and this one was also excellent.

The day's adventures began properly now, and I will say right now that I got very frustrated by how long most pedestrian crossings took to change. The amount of time spent stood waiting for the walk light to go on, ugh! My first destination was the Welcome To Las Vegas sign, which is all the way at the far end of the city. Maps suggested a 4.5 mile walk, but that didn't take into account the number of places you have to cross from one side to the other on bridges, or indeed going out and around many large obstructions. By the time I got to the sign, I'd done 6.1 miles according to Strava! The sign itself then, was it worth seeing? I'd say yes, it is a tourist-y thing but it's just one of those things you ought to do while in Las Vegas, if that makes any sense. I didn't join the crowds right next to the sign, preferring to photograph it from other angles.

Back up the Strip I went, and it had been good to do it before the massive amount of crowds arrived. As I found out later on, it would get much busier! Logic now was to visit the Coca-Cola Store, as my sister likes the stuff and I figured it wouldn't hurt to get her a little something. The shop didn't open until 10am though, so I went off in search of food. When I did Amsterdam in January 2023, I was concerned it may be difficult to find convenient vegan food, to then be surprised how easy it was. The same could not be said for Las Vegas! It's also worth noting it was now getting warm, so I wanted to get back to the hotel ASAP to change into shorts and get out of the jeans. A visit to Walgreens got me a few bits and bobs to eat and drink but nothing all that amazing.

I wanted to take a different route back to the hotel, but ended up getting lost at one spot so got less brave until later when I tried again. Eventually, 12.73 miles into the bank I arrived back at the hotel and by now, well I was committed to the crazy idea of going for a new distance record. My previous best was 23.5 miles or so when I was in Zagreb, Croatia, in March 2022. I knew full well, given it was not yet lunchtime, that I could smash past that and set a new personal best. There was plenty to explore, so I figured it made sense to at least try. After a bit of a break in the room, I walked back out to find it had got even sunnier and warmer, the suncream I'd applied before leaving the first time would prove to be a very good decision! Back to 7-Eleven next, for another large sugary coffee, and which turned out to be the last one of the day. For an endurance day, such low levels of caffeine are unheard of for me!

Next up was a walk up to Downtown Vegas, a completely different world to the more touristy part I had just been to. I just kept going straight, up past a number of those wedding chapels you see in movies etc, and at Fremont Street I saw more of the tacky, tourist-y, stuff you'd associate with Las Vegas. Not for me thanks, I kept going and I could see the mountains getting closer on the horizon so I wanted some photos. I was heading towards North Vegas, past places like The Neon Museum and Cashman Center. The views of the mountains at a car parking area in Cashman Center were excellent, worth the trek in my opinion but I also wanted clearer photos of the mountains to the west of Las Vegas.

It was from here that I discovered how much of a problem Las Vegas has with homelessness. I honestly didn't know about that, and it made for unpleasant viewing. Not to mention unpleasant smelling, I had come across an area which absolutely stunk of urine and (no doubt) other things. I was, of course, now making a beeline for a route out of there and to eventually get back to the Downtown area. I am honestly dismayed that the USA has let all these people down, I mean even if they've ended up there through things like substance abuse, surely there is a way they can get help to get back on track. It's an issue in most places, granted, but not to the extent I saw.

Eventually I gave up and somewhere near West Vegas I got a photo of the snow-capped mountains which would have to do. It was time to retreat back to Downtown and have a bit more exploring, which led me back to the Fremont area. As much as it really isn't my scene, I had to go and see what the Fremont Street Experience was all about. Lots of loud music, bars, 'food' places (I honestly don't know what most of them sold but I was certainly repulsed!) and all that sort of thing. Very tacky, very silly and I was soon back on the streets with my SuperNovas pounding the pavements. I was over 20 miles into the walk by now, and I was heading south again, when I finally found where the freight railway tracks led to.

At that spot, near Interstate 15, I saw some of the massive diesel locomotives one usually thinks of when it comes to freight trains in the USA. A clear photo was not the easiest thing in the world to get, but I think I did OK. I was now absolutely ready to eat, and I'd seen a sign for Chipotle nearby. I'd not been before, but that seemed like a very sensible place to try. This was in a premium shopping outlet center, a bit like what I imagine Bicester Village in the UK to be like, and that place is on my list to visit one day. I wasn't here for shopping today though, I was ready to eat a massive meal!

I got a burrito with brown rice, pinto beans, sofritas (plant-based protein stuff), a bit of salsa and medium sauce. At $9.20, it was not a cheap feed but a great one I have to say, and I will visit Chipotle on my travels again. The thirst was very real, that medium sauce had a big kick to it, and a bottle of cold water was $2,90. An outrageous price, but most needed!

Back on the explore, I found one of the bike share bays and they look OK, I was still a bit nervous about trying them but I was convinced I would do so. Not yet though, I had a mission to complete, and I was soon back on territory from earlier to link up to a different street I hadn't done. Eventually I was back at the tourist-y area, marked by the Las Vegas arches near The Straat, and I wanted to do my gift shopping now so I wouldn't be distracted by it when I went back to the Strip to see it all lit up at night. It took a good long while to get to the Coca-Cola Store, partly because of the crowds, but I eventually made it and got my sister a little polar bear. My case would not have much room in it, so it wasn't the bigger one I wanted to get but this would do.

I also popped into M&Ms World a few doors down, and oh wow I would have loved this place a few years ago. Especially the chocolate wall, which I had to say caught my attention. This is a huge number of tubes filled with all sorts of M&Ms, many different flavours and for an enthusiast of M&Ms it would be a dream come true. I did get some Skittles from one of the tubes, ready to munch on in the evening, and got my sister some other stuff here. One of the gifts is being kept by for a future occasion, it just had to be got when I saw it for a reasonable price.

Back on the street and I was on 29 and something miles. I was definitely in new record territory now, but I'd set my heart on 30 or more miles. By now, as I'm sure you can imagine, the feet were getting pretty fed up! Onwards and upwards one more time, back to base, and after what felt like a very long time once I finished the last of my water bottles, I reached the hotel and cleared 32.5 miles. That would do very nicely for my new record! Walking past the casino, restaurants etc I was soon in the lift and I quite literally kicked the Supernovas off! A much needed rest and some food was the priority, as was logging the activity on Strava. That crashed 4 times when trying to upload the activity, which was very frustrating but thankfully it worked eventually. It wouldn't let me add many photos, which is unusual but Strava does have a tendancy to play up!

During the rest, I decided the bright lights of the Strip could wait, I wanted to head to the pool, which I had naively assumed was indoors. First though, a shower was required to burn off the day's sweating, and that felt better! The feet were not liking me, especially the left one which had showed no signs of irritation until now. I eventually found it's a rooftop pool, and is open 10am to 6pm. I was too late for that, I'd spent 11 hours on my exploring and only walked through the doors at 1745. So I figured I'd at least check out the fitness center, one of the reasons for booking this hotel. The lifts refused to go to the relevant floor, and after many attempts I gave up trying and went to ask reception about it. Apparently the fitness suite was closed for some reason for a few days, which was very disappointing. I think she could tell I wasn't best pleased, and offered to waive some of the resort fees to make up for it. She had offered me $40 in credit to use in the restaurants and casino, but that was absolutely no use to me!

Wondering what to do next, I ended up in 7-Eleven for the third time in one day and got a large Big Gulp cup of Dr Pepper for $1.40. I don't have Dr Pepper too often these days, so this was a nice treat to end a really warm day. I could have gone to the Strip, for those night scenes, but to be perfectly honest my feet were not going to like that. They needed to be in good condition for Day 3, as I was off to the Grand Canyon which was the main purpose of this trip. So it was a lazy evening in the room, catching up on RailUK Forums, before sleep eventually arrived around 2145.

Delighted to see you’ve landed in some fantastic weather. Not a cloud to be seen judging by those photos. 7 Eleven has become my saviour living where I am currently, and I’m glad you have access to it too

The Grand Canyon will no doubt bring in some spectacular views. Be careful of loose boulders though. “Aron Ralston” famously pulled at one and dislodged it, and it pinned him to the canyon wall for three days.

29/03/2023 - Juliano vs Miley Cyrus - Juliano's In The USA, Day 3

Imagine my disappointment when I woke up at 0051! For the second night in a row, I was not getting a good sleep and I wasn't impressed. Some on-again, off-again sleep followed until 0404, and by then it made sense to catch up on the trip report notes. That took quite some time, I must say, and it was 0519 before I finished that! I had stuff to do still, and I had now decided to visit Smash Me, Baby! (a vegan restaurant in Downtown Vegas, missed it yesterday) around 0.6 miles away for lunch on Day 4. How I was going to fit in those bike share bikes, I wasn't too sure. I had the time on Day 3 to try them out before my pickup for the Grand Canyon sightseeing tour, as that was at 1135, but I wasn't going to cycle in a city I don't know in the hours of darkness! It seemed like a scary thought, to cycle in Downtown Vegas, but it also looked less scary than trying to do so along the Strip!

Around 0625 I went to 7-Eleven and got a large sugary coffee, and a snack-pack of Oreos, for $4.26 including sales tax. I probably should have bought the large packet for $2 more, but I had to remind myself that I'm supposed to be shredding fat, not adding to it! I also noted that according to Strava I'd done 199km of logged walking in March 2023 thus far, which I was pretty pleased with. That isn't too far from a record amount, which was 207km in January 2023. I could easily demolish that, 8km is hardly difficult. A little after 7am, I was almost ready mentally to go outside and try out the local RTC Bike Share scheme's bikes, I say mentally ready as this was not going to be like cycling in London or Amsterdam, this could be pretty scary! I wasn't going to take on the Strip, as much as that would probably be quite the experience.

No, I had seen some green bike lanes on some of the streets in Downtown Vegas, so I had a plan in mind to ride up to Fremont at least. I didn't want to do too much, as I had a full day of sightseeing in the Grand Canyon ahead too. Or at least, that's what I thought was happening, little did I know what I'd find out later on!

I made my way over to the nearby RTC bike bay, and once I eventually realised I didn't actually need to use the touchscreen on the bay to unlock a bike, as I had the app, I got set up to ride. I had bike number 04990 for my mini tour of Downtown Vegas, and once I got to Fremont Street I turned right and ended up in the suburbs. Once I figured out where I was on the map, I made my way back to find the choice of route was closed for roadworks. Cue more suburban cycling! Eventually I got back to the main road, only to find I needed to go the opposite way to that which I wanted, due to the street layout. Eventually I made it over to the other side and got going again, but I was definitely going to be over the 30 minute mark. I had bought a $5 Dasher pass, which gave me rides for up to 30 minutes each for 24 hours. If I went over 30 minutes, it would charge me $4 for each 30 minutes. Given that would be the case, I extended my tour and took on more streets!

Eventually I found one of the green bike lanes on the way back to the start point, but much of it was closed due to roadworks, so I spent more time in the mercifully quiet traffic than I'd wanted. I arrived back at the bike bay around 55 minutes after starting my tour, that had taken way longer than expected and came in at 9.6 miles. There were definitely some very anxious moments, but overall it was good and my first experience of cycling in the USA was less scary than thought. It was not as smooth as cycling on routes like CS3 in London, or on the red tarmac routes in Amsterdam, but this was OK. Into Walgreens I went to pick up a couple of bits, then to 7-Eleven for a coffee. There wasn't enough of the Colombia blend to fill a large cup, so it had to be a medium one.

When I got back to the room, all excited and pumped up ready for the main event of the trip, I saw I had voicemails. 'Oh dear, what's happened? Who on Earth has left me all these messages?' was the train of thought. That sort of thing had me on edge, and I had to listen and fast. It was bad news, as due to high winds forecast for the afternoon my sightseeing flight to the Grand Canyon was cancelled. I got back in touch with them, using the phone in my room, as I'm pretty sure local calls were included in my resort fee, and while I'd have loved to reschedule the tour there was not enough time to do so before my flight back to London on Day 4. It might have been doable, but the risk of missing my flight was too much to seriously consider. So I was having to get a full $554 refund, and it is safe to say, and that it was an understatement, that I was gutted.

Devastated, heartbroken, fed up. The reason for visiting Las Vegas had been the convenience of a tour to the Grand Canyon, and the tour was very much a wishlist trip. Yes I would get the money back, which would help the credit card no end, but now I'd effectively spent around £1,000 on a trip to Las Vegas that I didn't really need to, and that sucked so badly I could not even put it into words.

I had very little left to do in Las Vegas, the list basically comprising of the monorail and seeing the Strip lit up at night. I could of course go back out and do some more cycling, which looked like a tempting offer, and I had the hotel's rooftop pool that I still fancied trying. Otherwise, I had literally all day with nothing I really wanted to do, I'd almost cleared my list ready for the sightseeing tour, to then be all finished by the morning. Every Grand Canyon tour option I could find by road had either left for the day, or would get back to Las Vegas too late on Day 4 to ensure I made it to the airport on time for the flight to London. I was not missing that flight through my own doing!

After a phone call from my sister, I ended up visiting the rooftop pool. It was quite a nice area, and the pool was reasonably warm. The wind sure made one cold when out of the water though! Following a good 15 minutes or so there, I returned to the room and saw the wind forecast. 38mph gusts, and that was in Las Vegas, I dread to think what it would have been like at the Grand Canyon on such a day! I decided to have another go on the bikes, before the wind really kicked in. By the time I unlocked the same bike (04990) the wind had arrived enough to make my planned ride down one road, to then cut across and ride up the Strip, not worth doing so I gave up part of the way there and went back earlier than planned. It was not even 12 noon, and I was running out of ideas on how to fill such a lot of time!

As it was nearly lunchtime, I figured I'd visit Smash Me Baby! and see what their vegan food was like. It was no wonder I couldn't find the place before, it was so far out from everywhere I'd been that it was never going to be found without Maps! When I got there, I was disappointed that it was not an actual restaurant but just a pick-up point for food. There was a tablet to order food, but because they insist on texting you when the order is ready, you have to input a USA-registered mobile number. Which was no good to me, so I gave up on that idea, just when I thought my luck with food was changing. The return to the UK was getting more and more desireable, perhaps a more forward-thinking city exists in the USA that doesn't cater primarily for dairy and meat consumers only, but I don't have much faith in that!

Not too much later, I found myself in a 7-Eleven and they had extra large coffee cups. Oh yes, I simply had to get one of those! They had potato wedges on a hot food counter, which I got a handful of, and they were really nice. Onwards towards Fremont I went, in search of ideas to fill the time. After a while, I came across another RTC bike bay and simply had to have another go. I found some green bike lanes, although these are nowhere near as widespread as you might expect them to be. When there's lots of room, something a city like London doesn't have, and Las Vegas can't seemingly be bothered to put bike lanes in whereas London have made a lot of effort, then it shows quite well how Las Vegas is not a bike-friendly city! I didn't stay on that bike long, just 1.3 miles in the end, and most of that time was spent waiting at traffic lights. There's no cycle-friendly advanced stop lines, no priority at junctions, nothing like that at all. Even New York, one of the most congested cities in the world, is making efforts to put cycling infrastructure in. Las Vegas? No.

I was soon walking back, and somewhere one of the homeless people who I'd not interacted with in any way started a whole torrent of verbal abuse. I was at the other end of the block, no small distance really, before I finally stopped hearing him. What triggered his temper I have no idea, and I can only imagine he was under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Long before I got back to Sahara Avenue, near my hotel, I had got more than fed up of the horrible, horrible city. It has a bad reputation anyway, and I had not wanted to visit the place, it was only because of the sightseeing tour to the Grand Canyon I had gone there. I wanted out of the place, I wanted to return to the UK as soon as possible. If I hadn't been in such a nice hotel, I'd have called BA and asked if there was any chance of moving to an earlier flight. Even at 1642, I was wanting to do such a thing and was willing to pay extra money to a certain extent to do so.

Having looked at how much a flight would be, and the disappointing availability of anything better, I went and put YouTube on for a bit. Apologies for butchering the lyrics below a bit, certainly for messing them up a bit but it fits the tale of the trip report better this way!

[song]my tummy's turning and I'm feeling kinda homesick...that's when the DJ put on my favourite tune, and a Fat Les song was on, and a Fat Les song was on![/song]

Yes, really, one of the first songs that popped up was Fat Les' Vindaloo. Yes I know it's a football song, but it features as one of my favourite flying tunes! I saw a big smile come out (I was sat in front a huge mirror) when the song came on, I have to confess! A bit later, I got the packing done and the trip report title's musical reference, Miley Cyrus' Party In The USA (it came up when I booked the trip, and seemed appropriate somehow), was on a few times. After that, I moved on to an indoor workout, in this case a bit of a rave to the soundtrack of Bonkers 8's Hixxy mix. The first 35 minutes or so of that was a good way to get almost every part of the body moving!

By 1815, the rain had gone away and wasn't I glad to be indoors when I saw it come down, to be replaced by glorious sunshine. With the packing complete, except for the last minute bits in the morning, I figured I'd best get moving and get back outside. My helmet was packed away, so no matter what I wasn't going for another ride. I had had a good 4 and something hours in the room, with a whole load of junk food consumed and the extra-large coffee had finally kicked in. It was next time to head out and do the monorail, which runs from Sahara Hotel to MGM Grand via places like Westgate, Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Strip and a few other places. I was after a 24 hour pass for $8, which would cover me for the evening and anything else I fancied doing in the morning before checking out on Day 4. I was nearly ready to leave Las Vegas behind and by 1830 I had finally cheered up enough to go back out.

I have no idea why I thought the monorail was included in that $8 for 24 hours of travel ticket, that must just be for buses. When I got to the ticket machines, a single journey was $5 with other options being 24, 48 and 72 hour passes at various prices. With my $5 ticket in hand, I made my way down to the platform with a lengthy wait for a train. No information systems of any kind were available, and with the wind blowing quite strongly still it was not terribly pleasant waiting for it. Eventually, set number 5 arrived and it was on a slower than expected journey to MGM Grand. Don't get me wrong, it's much faster than walking, and you don't get held up by all the crowds or wait signs, but it wasn't as fun as I thought it might be. The seating certainly wasn't comfortable!

Following the signs for the exit 'via MGM lobby' was all fine and good, but suddenly there's no signage and you're in MGM Grand's enormous casino and bars area. Whether I simply missed the exit sign (very possible), or whether this was more a ploy to get you to spend money in there, I don't know but what a rancid place to end up in. This must be one of the last places on Earth where smoking indoors is permitted (seemingly only at certain parts at least), and I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I got lost, which really isn't hard to do there, but eventually I made my way out of the place. I don't know what 'food' it was that I smelt cooking but it seemed to be seafood, and all things considered in that place the fresh air was so welcome it was unreal. What a horrible place to end up in!

I was finally out on the Las Vegas Strip, and I have a slightly controversial opinion here but I preferred it during the day. It was certainly challenging to take photos, I got some of course and by the time I got to the end of the Strip I was most grateful that it would be the last time I would go up or down it. After getting a t-shirt for my brother in the Bonanza gift shop, a place full of all the tacky touristy stuff, I looked at getting some fries from Carls Jr for some sort of proper food. I looked at my options, and while it was good to see a Beyond Meat burger available it also got served with regular cheese. Genius, pure genius, not! Thankfully I didn't go with anything in the end, as during the queuing time there was a weird smell in the place and that put me off even getting fries! Good gravy, bring on the UK where actual, proper food is actually a thing! That first British meal upon arrival back in the UK was going to be so enjoyable, although I had no idea where I was going for it yet. All I knew is that I was keen to get back to England, we may have a country full of issues but it is preferable to Las Vegas that's for sure!

At 7-Eleven, a small decaf and some biscuits were sourced and I cleared 5.1 miles on that walk. I was well into new personal best terrain for a month now, and I still had 2 days to push my total up even further. I think it was around 2245 when I fell asleep, fully expecting of course to be awake a few hours later!

------

I've plenty of other photos yet, these include the screenshot from Strava of the Day 2 walk, RTC bike share bays, the monorail at sunrise, the later-on fierce weather closing in over the mountains (viewed from the hotel room), a night scene on the Strip, the Smash Me Baby sign and The Strat tower. Plenty of others to share at some point! Right now, it's off to the shower then to 7-Eleven!

I suspect the early mornings is your body clock not adjusting to West Coast times.

I wonder what those other 2 people movier systems are like in Vegas (Mandalay Bay Tram & Aria Express), I never got the chance to explore when I visited ten years ago as it was in a tour group doing the city centre at night

I didn't see the Aria one, the one from Mandalay Bay looked similar to the Birmingham Airport link, just a bit longer.

You could be right with the body clock thing, a solid sleep was had last night. I post live from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport, gate E2, and I am so very sick of hearing the announcements about how I can help increase the effectiveness of the airport's security programme! I have heard that way too many times today. The amount of people leaving stuff behind, or being requested to contact the operator on an airport courtesy phone, and getting paged via the tannoy, is surprising!

Bring on London I say!

30/03/2023 - Juliano vs Miley Cyrus - Juliano's In The USA, Day 4

Much to my incredible surprise, I didn't wake until around 0620, 7 hours of solid sleep was a nice surprise this week! It was a mightily lazy morning, eating junk food and catching up on RailUK Forums before I went out to 7-Eleven for an extra large coffee and a 6-pack of Oreos to finish breakfast off. Just before 1000, I went out for a bit of a power-walk and took on some local streets I'd not yet done, with the ambition there being both to mix things up and to add to my CityStrides lifetime coverage map. I had zero intention of ever returning to Las Vegas, but while the opportunity was there I figured I may as well get some exercise.

With a 4.79mph average, I cleared 2.9 miles in the glorious sunshine before checking out at 1100. I now had 10.5 hours to fill until take-off, and I could not leave Las Vegas without one last 7-Eleven coffee! After that, I got my walk on down Paradise Road, and the sunshine had gone. To be fair, the forecast had called for light rain to start at 1300 or so. 2.6 miles into the walk, which wasn't much fun with a case but what can you do, and I saw a Chipotle across the road. Next door, there was Pieology Pizzeria, and a sign in their window said they had vegan options. That was me sold on going in then, I was pretty hungry for actual food, not just junk food like the vast majority of my eating in Las Vegas had been. With a tip, I had a gluten free pizza with spinach, pineapple and vegan-friendly sausage for $12.94. It was a very good size too, around 10" across I'd say, and I didn't really enjoy the base but the rest of it was excellent.

At 1234, I was all done and had a satisfied stomach, although I was still looking forward to a proper meal upon my return to London. The rain started on and off by now, in places it got heavier than expected but I made it. The sidewalk is certainly questionable in places, and I'd only really recommend the walk if one is carrying on a backpack only on their flight. My shoulders certainly noticed the effort with being held in one place, pushing the case with its dodgy wheel, and with a surprisingly weighty backpack as well. I'd count the effort as at least double! 229km for the month, this is of course just distance recorded on Strava. Things like walking at work, or around airports, don't count! Beating whatever the new record will be when I get back to the house, well it's going to take some serious doing!

Around 1315, I finally made it to Terminal 1, the walking route once off Paradise Road is very twisty and defies any logic, but I got there. The whole walk took in around 5.4 miles, going via the Las Vegas Strip would have been both longer and slower, with the crowds etc. There's no safe walking route to Terminal 3, so it was past baggage reclaim in Terminal 1 to get downstairs and over to the free shuttle bus to Terminal 3, which I finally got to around 1330. The queue for security was already quite slow moving, but I wasn't ready for that yet anyway. I was however ready to get on the aircraft and get back to the UK! I sensed the desire to play Rule Britannia and God Save The Queen on YouTube somehow!

Following that, I finally got to work on updating my cycle mileages which I last did on 16th October 2022. By the time the data was off Strava, it was 1500. This was just for my Blue Beauty and The Beast, the latter I did not realise has not been out in absolutely ages. It's been waiting for literally months for repairs, I must get that seen to soon. I also noticed that the inbound flight from London was now 47 minutes late, hopefully that might change. The other cycle mileages, and indeed adding up all the totals, would wait until later, a break was needed. It wasn't like I had much else to do I suppose! Later on, after a really nice No Cow chocolate peanut butter flavour protein bar from Hudson News, at the ching of $5.69, I had all but my Beryl mileages listed in my book. I would work those out soon, but I was finally close to having an updated all-time total of cycle mileages!

1550 and I finally put Bonkers 4's Dougal mix on, this being from the World Frenzy album which my world travels series originally took their name from. I succumbed to Starbucks finally, and with my reusable mug I got a Pike Place brew for $4.28. They didn't get a tip from me though, the service was not good enough! The inbound flight was still showing as 47 minutes late, and I was now basically waiting for bag drop to open. I still had some hours to go for that!

1711 and I had got my power bank to use for the first time ever (good thing it works eh?) as I was down to 66% and there were no obvious public charging points (I found these post-security, but didn't use them). My flight was showing as now departing at 2210, and I was so bored. Finding things to do was now getting tough, I had a book to read but to be honest I wasn't really in the mood for that. I'd go outside for some serious leg stretching walks, but it was very British in terms of weather outside. The chill factor was very real, and I noted I was down to $26 out of the $174 I'd arrived with. Good gravy that went down fast didn't it, I had expected the £150 to be way more than enough. That said, I'd expected the USA to be a lot more vegan-friendly than it is! I was waiting for bag drop to open, but I couldn't find out when that would be. I had discovered there's not anything of any real interest food-wise past security, joy! The good, healthy, vegan options at Heathrow were being very much missed I can tell you that much!

1731 and the bag drop queue opened, within seconds it filled fast but I was through at 1754. 12.2kg for the case, and I was through security around 30 minutes late. It appeared I picked a security lane which, although it moved quickly to begin with, had some IT issues. Never mind, I wasn't rushing anyway! Thankfully there was more to do post-security, and I even managed to get a few aircraft registrations. I'm sure I could have got a few more if I kept walking around later on, but as it was getting dark it would be a challenge. I investigated plenty of options for food, and at Hudson I spent a huge $10.99 on a decent size packet of cinnamon flavoured plant-based churro puffs. The packaging had certainly caught my eye, as in big letters it screams out "You Need This". I had to agree, they sounded amazing! I did look at the restaurants, but nothing appealed.

In the end, the stomach was fed up and as much as I doubted they'd be vegan-friendly, I got a large fries and large portion of onion rings from Burger King for $7.56. They were certainly well received, and I took a seat by gate E2 not long before sunset. This gate had an excellent view of the runway, and it was good fun watching aircraft taking off on one runway and landing on the one next to it. It was a shame that I couldn't ID the aircraft, my book would have greatly welcomed the ticking off of many aircraft but hey ho. I was also in prime position to watch the 2100 to London with Virgin Atlantic's craft arrive and, of course, the A350 for my flight. It's also worth noting that Las Vegas' airport plays music on its overhead system, a variety of music at that and a hugely different atmosphere to London Heathrow. Oh, and there used to be a Pret here but it closed and is being replaced by something else. That would have been awesome to go to, but no!

At 1911, I was still around 3 hours from departure, but every minute that went by was a minute closer to getting to London. I was also trying to decide which movie to watch, it has to be said there was a good selection on BA. Shaun Of The Dead was on there, and I hadn't seen that in years! Later on, I tried those snacks and they were exceptionally tasty. I had to stop myself eating the whole lot, they were meant to be for the flight! BA274 was scheduled for a 9 hours and 55 minutes flight, and at 2010 it was down to just 2 more hours to go. Having caught up on RailUK Forums, I was fast running out of things to do so it was back out with the earphones! 2023 and BA275 arrived from London 53 minutes late, was I in for a winner?

Yes! Winner G-XWBA was to fly BA274 to London Heathrow, happy days! I'd been lucky enough to select 31D, an aisle seat almost at the front of World Traveller. A pretty good choice that! Time passed slowly, very slowly, but boarding finally began at 2136. Group 8 was finally allowed to go forward at 2154, and just after 2200 I was in seat 31D. This is next to the bulkhead wall in the middle of the craft, and I have to say I have no idea how the in-flight entertainment screen was released from the armrest! The table, yes that was a bit easier to figure out but the screen? Who knows, it should be easy! Later, one of my seat neighbours asked a crew member, there's a button and it turns out you have to press it quite firmly. Ah, that makes sense!

Pushback finally commenced at 2210, 40 minutes late, and I was definitely tired. This seat had excellent legroom, so that was more than welcome! Finally it was into the air at 2227, so long Las Vegas, I'd say it was nice seeing you, that I'd miss you, but that would be quite a big fat lie!

Meal service was surprisingly quick on this flight, and I had my vegan meal which consisted primarily of various vegetables such as aubergine and butternut squash, amongst others, in a tomato-like watery sauce. I've got to be honest, it wasn't that great. Edible but not really worth having. I tried the salad pot but no thank you, it just didn't taste good. The bread roll tasted stale, and whatever the other pot was I couldn't tell you what it was. I assume it was intended to be a pudding, but while I ate it I have no idea what it was! The cabin was too dark to take a photo, not that it looked appealing anyway!

My first movie ended up being Disney's Brave, I first watched some of it following a night out years ago, and we were watching it at a friend's house. I didn't get to see all of it that day, so I've been going to correct that for a good few years. It was really good too, I'm glad I finally finished seeing it. Next up was Black Adam, a Warner Brothers DC film that I'd heard was good so wanted to find out for myself. At around 2 hours, it would be either really good or really poor!

I didn't realise I hadn't finished my trip report for the final day, I've just done so on the train back from today's adventure. I still have lots of photos to share, hopefully at some point I'll get them all uploaded etc. I also have a trip report from Saturday and from today to type up yet, let's just say there has been some great success for the red pen and for clearing stuff off my railway wishlist!

31/03/2023 - Juliano vs Miley Cyrus - Juliano's In The USA, Day 5

Well it turned out the film can't have been that good, I kept falling asleep in the first 45 minutes. It was decided to just get all wrapped up and attempt some actual sleep, which sounds like it should be easy I know. Finding a good and comfortable position was not easy, and later on I got my eyemask and earplugs out of the bag. This must have made it easier to sleep, as the next thing I knew it was 0355!

It was still less than 6 hours into the flight though, and it was mighty cold. I managed to get a bit more sleep until 0433, when I discovered one of the earplugs had gone missing somehow. It might only have been around 3 hours of actual sleep, maybe a little more, but it is exceptionally rare for me to sleep on a flight. I woke up feeling all kinds of discomfort, a good bit of stretching was definitely required!

0602 and the cabin lights came back on, and I was near the end of another film, Tad The Lost Explorer and The Emerald Tablet. Another animated film, but it wasn't too bad. The drinks trolley was on its way, which meant it was nearly coffee time, woohoo! Meal service came first, with a pot of seriously unripe melon and something else (no thanks), a dark chocolate sea salt seed and oat bar (that was surprisingly good) and the main? What looked like scrambled egg, an enormous mushroom cap which had leaked its juices over everything and the rest I couldn't tell you. A crew member said some of it was spinach but we were lost as to the rest of it. Oh and two overcooked cherry tomatoes. That wasn't worth waiting for, the heated 'food' rather supressed my appetite to be honest, I looked to have the spinach at least but it was all swimming in juices of unconfirmed but expected to be mushroom. It was also questionable as to whether it was egg or not, so I declined to eat any of that.

Seriously, it's not hard to make vegan breakfast. It's so simple to do, a lot of us don't like mushrooms and you could make many of us happy with a breakfast of something easy like toast and sunflower spread, or cereal and plant-based milk, or if you insist on offering something hot then baked beans on toast is surely not beyond the abilities of the average person! It was absolutely ages waiting after the 'food' was served before trays were collected, on the outward flight they were picked up much quicker. It's 'food' like this that makes me glad I don't fly too often, and quite honestly I had low expectations for a vegan meal served from the USA. I'd actually strongly putting 'no meal' in the special meal selection next time, it doesn't matter if it's 'free food' because it's included in the air fare, I'd rather not be served horrible food and see food wasted. That has to be one of the biggest issues in the aviation industry, the amount of food that goes in the bin is outrageous. Let's not mention the apparent lack of recycling, which I'd like to hope is sorted separately but I have no faith in that.

Anyway, rant about society in general over, by now at 0656, still waiting for trays to be collected nearly an hour after they were served, we were flying over Ayrshire. The journey was thankfully nearly over, my return to the UK was less than an hour anyway in theory. The return to proper food was almost upon me, and no I have no plans to ever move to the USA I can tell you that for sure! 1500 (back on GMT now) and with the tray finally collected, it was time to start getting ready to alight. The flight was good, pretty smooth all the way with only a few minor bumps, and yes I still like flying with British Airways! I'd like to say the trip was good, but to be honest I've had much better. I did wonder if I should have done the revisit to New York City, that could have worked out better.

What do I think of the Airbus A350 then? Well they're generally good planes, but I wouldn't book a flight with this craft type again. Where was I planning on going next? Well the original plan had been to save up for New Zealand, and do some UK based adventures in the meantime, but now I've got to replan it all following the failure to do the Grand Canyon. I did hope that it would include a 777 or 787 next time though!

It was back onto the ground at 1552 and arrival at the mighty London Heathrow at 1601, 36 minutes late. The noise the landing gear made when being dropped, and the wind noise audible in the cabin, was huge and not noticed on the outward flight, the flaps extending/retracting were not that noisy either. Quite, I've not experienced that level of racket any other time on a flight! Wet and windy in London, so about the same as what I left on Day 1! The rain was coming down sideways, what a day to be parked on a remote spot to disembark via stairs onto buses!

Passport control was pretty swift, and at 1641 I had expected baggage reclaim to be done. There were no bags on the belt, and I was wanting to hurry up and get back to Hereford. The 1858 from Paddington I could buy a ticket for, but that was showing as cancelled. Until I had my case, I wasn't willing to buy my ticket. Normally it's pretty quick, in my experience, at Heathrow but today it's really not. Argh! 1651 and the luggage finally started to arrive, 50 minutes after the plane docked. I was finally on the move at 1704, on the platform at 1707. 1709 and permission was finally granted for us to join 387139+387138 on a Heathrow Express service to London Paddington. I was not relying on the lift this time and went down the escalator, I'd have missed it if I'd waited for the unreliable lifts! I'd not tried contactless on Heathrow Express before, if I'd gone to buy a paper ticket I'd have missed the train.

Having bought my bargain on-the-day Advance for £18 to use the 1757 from London Paddington, with a 12 minute connection at Worcester Shrub Hill, I was quite pleased at the fare paid. I was leaving Heathrow in a more dignified way than I arrived, and that was on the Express. I know the Piccadilly line is much cheaper, but I just don't like it. All being well, my journey from Heathrow to Hereford will cost £43 if the contactless fare worked the way it should (which it did when I checked). I would even have time to source some proper food at Paddington!

Burger King didn't have the vegan option I wanted, so ended up buying various things in Sainsburys. I even had time for a Pret coffee! Eventually, the 1757 to Worcester Foregate Street commenced boarding and we left 10 minutes late on 802111. It was an absolutely storming run, and I had a new appreciation for the British countryside and towns following my trip to the USA. I was sat there munching away on black grapes (see USA, look how easy it is to supply vegan-friendly snacks!) and admiring the countryside as we raced along at 125mph, all felt good and with the other food I had such as a Violife cheese baguette (USA, do you hear me? How simple is that to supply a vegan meal?) I had a very satisfied stomach. In case you're wondering, I still had the rest of my snacks from Hudson in my backpack, ready for consumption soon.

It has to be said, the weather was awful in the UK so I'm glad I was simply heading back to base! I noted that I even scored another 6 BA craft after landing at Heathrow, slowly but surely I'm getting through them all! As I finish this trip report nearly a week later, and I hadn't realised this was incomplete, I see I failed to note the emergency speed restriction over a bridge between Culham and Radley, noteworthy as the same bridge has been closed due to it sinking into the river since my journey. That would explain why there was such a slow speed over it! The 802 eventually got to Worcester Shrub Hill, and with almost no notice there it was a case of grab everything and race to the other platform for 172342. That was on the Hereford, and it was being allowed ahead of the 802 which does make sense.

Eventually, after marching back to base as fast as possible, no easy feat with a case, I got to the end of my adventure. It is a bit unusual not to succeed with a mission on a World Frenzy trip, but it just wasn't meant to be.

All the dodgy airplane food :(

At least you scored a bargain with the on the day advance ticket

That I did, £18 London to Hereford is an absolute bargain. Getting to do Reading non-stop was pretty cool as well. Hopefully in the coming days I'll do Saturday and today's trip reports, they may get done with minimal detail though. I have quite a bit of TV to catch up on, including Race Across The World :D

Interesting final report. I've not been on a 350 yet but thought that they might be like a 787, i.e. their main competition. Which airline was it?

Sorry to be picky but I think it would have been 387139+387138 on HEx. LO 378s would have been the last straw for you!

I made that error when typing them into the moves file, obviously I corrected it there (I blame it on very mild dyspraxia, mighty annoying when it happens) but forgot here! I'll go and correct it now, thanks for pointing it out, I'd missed that in the proof-read! :)

Can you imagine LO 378s on Heathrow Express? Woah, no I would reject that very happily. Maybe do it once for the sheer lunacy, a story to tell the never-to-exist children kind of thing, but a 378 would be a bit perverse!

These A350s were with British Airways.

Only just had time to read this Tech. I know you didn’t get to see what you wanted but at least you got a good value trip with BA and a healthy refund. I’m sad to see Vegas seems to have gone downhill, I had a great time there in 2015. I think you need to go back to do the Grand Canyon, it is a great sight. Or, maybe do the California Zephyr which runs through impressive canyons in Colorado.

Sorry to hear that the GC trip didn’t work out. Must be frustrating.

A suggestion. NZ is an amazing country, and I wouldn’t delay that simply to have another go at the GC. But how about doing the GC en route to or from NZ? Fly via LA, and do the tour from there, then you don’t have to worry about Vegas. Save a few quid to say the least.

Yes indeed, the refund will be welcome. Particularly as I busted out the credit card for yesterday's adventure!

I've considered the Amtrak options, and they're just so expensive for what you get. No way would I choose to do such a journey on the seats to make it affordable. There's also the fact that I don't think I could spend that long on one train without getting incredibly bored.

The Grand Canyon is absolutely going to get re-done at some point, I just don't know when. The only thing I know is that I won't be doing Las Vegas again.

Frustrating indeed. Given the weather, which got wind that was strong enough to impact upon one's walking, it was the right thing to do but I'm just disappointed. If I'd done it the day before, I'd have had glorious weather!

That is an excellent suggestion about merging the Grand Canyon trip with New Zealand. I actually had not considered that before, but I like the idea. How I'll make it work is another thing entirely!

I can do sightseeing tours from Phoenix as well I do believe, I'd have to check that, and I'm not aware of tours to the Grand Canyon from LA but it would surely make sense that an option exists. Certainly, I have things to think about there, not that I can afford to fill the credit card that much again for a long time. Nor will I get that much time off again for a long time, I was fortunate as it was this time.

At least I've finally tried the A350, got a new single-activity walking distance record and a new leisure-walking-only record for a month, so that's pretty good!
