Shame about Northern being on strike, but at least you managed a couple of winners! Sounds like a good day, and a cheap one too. Oh, I forgot to mention, I don't like 319s because they are rubbish to travel in, but the noise is rather good on AC.

Nice to see you still managed to chalk a few off, Tech, despite the strike action. It totally ruined my plans for Leeds...

Must say I'm quite partial to a good bit of 319 action when making the trip across to Liverpool, certainly take them over the 185s!

Not yet had a 185 Liverpool to Manchester via Eccles, I still want to give that a go but not if I can get a good deal on a Northern 319! Good grief they make a good racket!

11/05/2017 - 88% Cleared And Counting, Day 1

First things first, I recently decided to terminate my Live Trip Reports on Twitter. I will still attempt to come up with clever trip titles though, which leads me nicely into this one. I still need 12 shacks to 100% clear LM, so each shack is worth 1% for the purposes of achieving the goal. Just after payday I decided to book another trip. Bearing in mind my need to get on with clearing LM, and having not scored a shack in quite some time, my goal of 150 shack scores in 2017 was looking unattainable. Before this trip, I had only scored 42 shacks in 4 and a bit months! Watford Central Premier Inn got booked, as did some Advances, the return journey being deemed worthy of an extra £15 for a First Class Advance. The St Albans Abbey branch was to finally get cleared as Priority Alpha for this bash, the Marston Vale would take a lot more planning.

Unsurprisingly I couldn't wait to finish work and get on the rails, having had to implement Ultra Tight Fisted Mode lately, due to spending way more than I should have done and impulsively buying a new suitcase on Bank Holiday Frothday [not that that stopped me consuming two expensive bottles of beer on 5th May, or a post-work mini bash on 10th May! - Ed] after all! A much needed combined lunch and tea was needed, so I got a large meat feast pizza from Pizza Hut. I got a surprise lift to the station, and gave two slices of my pizza to my sister as a result. I realised slightly too late I had a chance to make the 1639, but if I had I'd have been standing all the way to Worcester at the least. I still had my food to finish off too, so after a while I got dropped off before the weather changed. Two minutes later it got well nasty with lightning and heavy rain, well timed! A coffee was sourced from Pumpkin before I got on early for a good seat on 153354+170515 on the 1739 to the Bat Cave.

390128 was waiting for me to join it on the 1930 to London Euston, and it was time to put the charger on as I was down to a mere 15%, having not charged my phone the previous night as per the plan. The tunes were on too of course, and it took me a good while to realise I was on Kite's last 390! Unsurprisingly I don't think he was overly amused at that! It was a good run to Watford Junction, and after getting slightly lost I made it to base camp, on this occasion it was Premier Inn Watford Central. I had had the option of getting a 378 to Watford High Street then walking over, but as it was dud 378211 I rejected that idea. Check in was done in less than 3 minutes which was nice, and the window was left open thankfully as it was a rather warm night!

Now bring on the 319!

12/05/2017 - 88% Cleared And Counting, Day 2

0615 and I was wide awake, the curse of being awake at that sort of time every day. It surprised me though, considering I didn't hit the hay until gone 2330, but no matter. After a more than mandatory de-rancification, and a bag pack, it was downstairs for breakfast. This must be the first time I've not used a lift in a hotel, but then there was no need to as I was only on the first floor. £8.99 and about 45 minutes later my enormous breakfast was consumed and I felt mighty ill for at least 20 minutes afterwards. Given what I've listed below as my breakfast, I think that should have been expected:

- 5 mini pain au chocolat (hellfire things!)
- 1 decent size croissant
- 2 rounds of toast with Nutella spread
- 1 small Yeo Valley strawberry live yoghurt (surprisingly nice)
- 3 sausages, 3 slices of bacon, 3 hash browns and baked beans
- 3 small glasses of orange juice
- 3 cups of coffee

Worth £8.99 as it effectively was designed to cover both breakfast and lunch, but oh my days I felt proper ill after all that! My stomach is no longer used to big breakfasts, after all it's been made to get used to going to work all day on a couple of toasted muffins and caffeine! Note to self, don't do such a breakfast move again, it's not worth having to sit on the bed for more than 20 minutes complaining about it! Once the recovery was done, it was a slow walk back to Watford Junction. £4.40 later I was armed with a day return to winner shack How Wood, and I get a large coffee from Upper Crust from the slightly flirty lass serving. Upstairs for urgent business first, then I discovered I could have got a Puccinos coffee! D'oh! Over to platform 11 and I joined 319216 for the run to How Wood. Much to my incredible surprise, tickets were checked before departure, credit where it's due to LM for being proactive on revenue checks.

A nice noisy run in the motor coach saw me endure a boring 16 minute fester, rejoining 319216 to winner shack Garston. I discovered where Asda is and went on what turned out to be a long walk and WOW, this Asda is ENORMOUS! I came out with more than expected, then did the walk to winner shack Watford North and joined 319216 yet again, turning it into a Super Dud, to winner shack Bricket Wood. That cleared the St Albans Abbey line shacks, just 8 more to go on the Marston Vale so I'm now at 92% Cleared on LM.

It was a fester for 378s next, and to avoid boring you all it was dud followed by dud followed by more duds! I was going to see if I could travel on the 1237 instead, but upon discovery it would be a single 221 I voted against that idea! I ended up scoring The Flag next to the station, but as it turned out my choice of beer was a dud, not much luck for me in the dump of a place better known as Watford! Eventually time passed and I joined 390047 in First Class, a rare treat, to find someone sitting in my seat so I sat in his one, typical snobs for you there. I had a coffee soon followed by the drink I've been wanting for some time, Virgin Trains West Coast's weekday First Class only Tilting Cider. Oh my LORDZ that was nice and thoroughly worth waiting for. As was the escape from Watford, I cannot, on a family friendly forum, describe how glad I was to leave there after the best part of 2 hours! The other adult beverage of choice was Redwillow's Wreckless, which is dud from my Beer52 days, should have checked it before I ordered otherwise I'd have had more cider!

As I was surrounded by the expenses crew, I had my earphones for most of the journey. Good thing too as just as I took them out in the Midlands that horrid iPhone ringtone started. Until then I had lucked out, oh I hate that noise and was so glad to go back to Tech's Mobile Disco for what a slow run between Coventry and Birmingham International. It should be noted now I didn't think much of the First Class hosts, just because I wasn't dressed like a snob and wanted to be fussy with my food and beverages I got less than a friendly attitude!

I'm not used to that on Virgin West Coast in Standard let alone First, so imagine how annoyed I was as I often rave about how good VTWC are for customer relations! I would have had at most 90 seconds to try and make the 1449 homewards, having arrived 2 down, so I didn't even try and went to the First Class lounge.

This one is different to the one I did years ago, in a new location, and is actually quite nice. Those armchairs are awesome, and the host here was much better than the on-board crew, so I made a point of tweeting that much to Virgin too. Eventually I headed out for my train home, after sourcing some of that hellfire orange juice of course, and join 170501+153371 for some DBT homewards. The atlas was finally updated with my first shack scores in quite a while, and of course the moves book got its update having done my RM update with Virgin's free WiFi.

Once back in Hereford I went to my new favourite pub, Hogarths, and had a winner cider before getting the bus home. A limited amount of scores, and I have yet to get a winner in May, but that will soon change!

Congrats on clearing the Abbey Line

Agreed about the Marston Vale will be harder to do, will probably involve at least a couple trips.

I would insert a joke about guess which 158 I saw at Salisbury earlier, but 884 is currently on holiday so a joke about 150916 being extra vocal will have to do :P

I dont think your breakfast discumfort should be avoided again as by my calculations that saved you a good bit of money and the trick is just eat slowly.

Good day but I am amazed at the FC hosts, never ever in all trips had an unfriendly host, perhaps they were X VTEC and not retrained yet?

I am determined to do the Marston Vale lot in one trip, although I have yet to work out how. Various bits of research will be done on Sunday! Not that I can afford it yet anyway.

Much grr Mr Kite about 150916, it will be mine soon enough!

Breakfast, yeah I was rather hungry so eating slowly was not going to happen. My insides are still not forgiving me yet!

As for the FC crew, it could just be down to a bad day. They could of course be ex-VTEC and unfamiliar with the standards we have on the correct side of the Pennines!

I suspect a hotel in Bletchley for a Thursday night, with walking to Fenny Stratford for the 08:26 service (off-day day return valid on this service I believe).

Then probably linear hops, maybe walking between nearby stations where available (i.e. Lidlington to Millbrook) and using additional tickets

Not much else to say apart from at least the line is done! You've made what was a relatively mundane trip sound quite exciting with your report! I'm like you with food though! I eat quickly (especially if I am hungry) but I don't suffer much with it after!

Watford is an absolute hole, and congratulations on never having to go back - unless the Met extension eventually happens.

However, one thing genuinely surprised me about your report - aren't all ASDAs that big? Admittedly, being from the 'other end' of the abbey branch one doesn't frequent ASDA very often, and then only in an absolute emergency. But the Watford one is the same size as those at Hatfield & Stevenage.

Bald Rick, no not all Asda's are that big! There's one next to an intermediate shack betweeen Brighton and Worthing (I want to say Lancing but that sounds wrong) that really is tiny. Not been in it to find out exactly how big though. My local Asda is probably about half the size of the Watford store, and I've had reports the one in Pwllheli is tiny too. Trowbridge's store isn't huge either, and the one in Worcester was built in the city centre rather than the outside of town, so it's not massive. Those are the most immediate examples I can think of at least.

Oh if I do the bash starting in Bletchley I'll get started on the 0531!

I'm glad I managed to make the trip sound exciting, because it wasn't exactly thrilling

When you're hungry you do eat quicker in a bid to fill the stomach faster I find!

Only in a hotel would someone eat that much for breakfast .

Great read as always Tech.

Good job you were not around in the 1980's for the legendary Smorsgabord breakfast on the long gone Sally Lines service from Ramsgate.

A few friends of mine - with no drink partaken - basically ate themselves into a coma. Several times.

It was such a change compared to the then miserable food offerings on Sealink.

Another good read my friend, and that does sound like an amazing breakfast. I would probably only have managed about half of it before throwing in the towel, though.

Oh I had to make the most of my money's worth, otherwise no I'd have had a sensible amount of food! This morning's breakfast has been much more sensible, a bacon sandwich and nothing more. I do eat more in the evenings than in the daytime, just the way it is, so later on there will be an enormous roast chicken tea. When I say enormous, trust me it will be.

Besides gents, if you thought that breakfast was mad you should see my usual plate full in Toby Carvery, now THAT is a meal and a half...<D

Not bad at all - good luck at managing the Marston Vale in a day, even with an overnight stay at Bletchley. Sounds like a great brekky, I have to say.

Oh I came up with a plan to do them all earlier, and it would be perfectly doable. Especially if a tight +5 at the Bat Cave could be pulled off on the way south.

Only problem was I booked the hotel for the night before payday! Thankfully I'd booked a pay on arrival deal, so could cancel for free. I am however about to go and re-look at the plan as the original idea I had could actually work, doesn't rely on tight connections and would be far more fun...

Remember all the stations on the Marston Vale line on the double track section are all level crossings so be aware of any tight connections as the barriers might not go up.

That was well timed advice, as one of the shacks in my plan, version 3, had a +3 so I'm glad you said that because I had forgotten.

That line has become like an itch you can't quite scratch, I want it done and out of the way. There is no cheap way of doing it that's for sure!

19/05/2017 - MAY LORDZ!

When I started typing this up on 15th May, during my inward commute, I couldn't think of a sensible title, so for 3 days it was "title here"! It was during the homeward commute, upon leaving the bus stop for Maylords Shopping Centre, that this title came about. It's May and the desire to bellow "MY LORDZ!" was predicted to occur a lot, so a play on words felt highly appropriate.

This trip needs little introduction, it was lined up to be THE diesel gala of 2017, the spring diesel gala on the SVR. It may be a long time before another brand new class is unveiled to the masses in such a fashion. I'll ignore that chingy tour which had 88002 on it for its first passenger working, not all of us could afford it or get to it. This gala had an incredible line up, way back in February it was decided I was going when I went through the list of visitors and ran out of fingers to count the winners available! For a few days, with money being tight lately, I did consider not going and doing something cheaper instead, such as staying at home with a few beers. Fortunately that decision didn't go ahead, although I would have to do the gala on the cheap. No beers for me during my bashing! The other reason for not going was that at most I would only have 5.5 hours to fit in as much as possible. Regardless, I had to get the red pen out which, aside from HST trailers and individual coaches on MUs, had not been out for all of May before this trip!

Understandably, sleep was hard to come by the night before, and it was with heavy eyes it was out for the first bus to town. I knew not to risk the 0720 as I did that last week for work and it was severely delayed in traffic. No way was I willing to miss the 0845 to the Bat Cave, and it will not surprise anyone to learn I would have set up base camp in Kidderminster the night before if I had had my way. Quite, I had been tempted to bust out the magic plastic to do so after work, but with no phone charger or a change of clothes that idea was put to bed fast! I got to the station for 0742, so I had a lot of time to spare for a supply raid in Morrisons. The traditional Pumpkin visit was also made, after sourcing tickets and new ATW timetables, before joining 153371+170514 for the ride to Droitwich Spa. A coffee was sourced at the cafe on the Worcester-bound platform, the logic being it would be cheaper than on the SVR. £1.65 for a cup that would struggle to hold the contents of a Coke can was deemed a rip off and a mental note made not to do that again!

My first 172 in 4.5 months fell to Super Dud 172333 for the ride to Kidderminster, which cleared it for 100 miles. It didn't take long to get my day rover for £26.50, and I had plenty of time for photos before joining 47828 on the 1040 to Bridgnorth. It's been dud since summer 2004, but it was sure nice to get it again. At Bewdley I met up with andyb2706, and we took the 47 to Arley. There was plenty of time before my first winner in May, D9551 rolled in and took us back to Bewdley. What an absolute MONSTER that Class 14 was! It was onto a Peak next, with winner 45041 taking us back to Arley. Wow, a 45 that can make some proper noise?! 45112 scarred me for life years back with its epic dullness, maybe I was just unlucky. We came back here for a reason...

Double winners 20205+20189! These mighty fine machines took us back to Bewdley, and while we couldn't get to a droplight we got close and the noise was incredible. MY LORDZ these were enjoyable, oh my days I have missed 20s! These were also clawbacks from April 2016, when they didn't produce on the Sunday of a diesel gala on the Bluebell Railway. Another fine piece of classic English Electric engineering was up next, winner 50007 for one last leap to Arley. Winner 33108 took us back to Kidderminster Town, vice the planned bail at Bewdley, as I noticed a +2 onto the GBRf 66, 66771, which I needed. So we realise that somehow the timetable has gone to pot and D1062 was late, making us 9 late from Bewdley.

"Oh it's fine", we agree, "they'll surely hold the 66 for those of us wanting it". Umm, no it wasn't, oh dear not good. For me it worked out well, as it produced a later move that would get me a winner. However, first we went to Flag and Castle for a pint, served in plastic glasses to take away. Batham's Best Bitter was rather nice, and I owe Andy a pint on Operation Beer Bash 2 now! Winner 33035 and dud 73107 were in charge of the next train out, and we left a little late once a train came in from the west. Thankfully we made it onto winner 60100 back to Kidderminster Town, for what was scheduled to be 88003 and 73965.

Sadly, the 73/9 was still not back to health, so it would be 88003 solo. We got held just before the station, unwelcome on a rammed set of MK2s, and someone declared 60100 to have been taken off! It turned out to be correct gen, and 50031 got banged on for the final stretch into Town. That's going to mess up my RailMiles entries! Unexpected bonus chainage off 50031 at least. Up to the end of the platform after a photo of 50031 in Intercity Swallow livery, to get photos of winner 88003, and that took some doing with so many people doing the same. I managed to find a space a few coaches down, with Andy choosing to flag it having had it the day before. It will be no surprise that it was a very busy train, and due to it being so rammed and such a dull loco I was happy to bail at Bewdley, as many others did.

55022 made a welcome return to my moves book, having not had it for a long time, for the leap back to Kidderminster Town. I met back up with Andy afterwards, and we made our farewells as he was doing the 14 and 17 pairing. Oh I wish I could have done it as I need the 17, but such is life! It was a shame to end the fun so soon, but I got winners out of it and some amazing thrash too. I remain blown away by the racket 33108 made, I want more 33 haulage now! After eating my sandwich for a late lunch, I joined Super Dud 172333 again for the ride to Worcester Shrub Hill, changing rapidly for far more interesting 150221 to Great Malvern. 170515+153356 took me back to Hereford and the trip report was concluded just after Colwall, so the moves book got done too.

After getting back to Hereford, it was to Hogarths first for a pint which left much to be desired, then to Yates for a far superior pint. The bus home followed which, like the trains home from Kidderminster, was ultra boring. Still, it had been an excellent day full of good company and thrash, well worth every penny spent and I am SO glad I didn't stay at home after all! I even managed to start getting a plan going on for my week off in August, which was unexpected!

Opperation beer bash 2? More trains and less beers this time I hope, the last one had me convinced youd gone norm.

Good day it would seam. Disapointing the 88 isnt what you though, on the flip side on the rest of it and also on double dogbox action meaning total 170 avoidance, shame about the 172s.

Good to see you had a good time! Can't believe you nearly knocked it on the head! I'm jealous you have a red pen for an 88 and I won't now get it!

Cromptons (33s) truly are hellfire beasts - you were lucky to miss the 66 as it meant you got onto much superior traction. It sounds like a great day was had there even if the 88 wasn't what you'd hoped.
