Excellent Dhass :). This has reminded me that I took a video of us accelerating towards Canary Wharf etc on one that's still on my old phone. I showed it to a friend of mine and he couldn't believe it, there was a speedboat/launch type thing trying to keep pace with us and he kept bouncing off our wash.
I don't think there's many experiences for the money like it really.

They're also something I'm wanting to clear. The Canary Wharf ferry does intrigue me, and I'll definitely have to give that a go some time soon.

I've done a few of the city cruises along the Thames, and they can be pretty good to listen to.

Excellent read as always, Tech. In all my five years in London I never once took the clipper, which is clearly something I need to rectify by the sounds of it.

The riverboats certainly are good fun - I've done one once before on a family trip to London. Sounds like a great trip there! I'd have preferred 170 to Brum for 390 to Euston than 175 to Crewe for 350 to Euston though. Or, even better, tram direct! I do approve of your getting home method though.

20/04/2017 - AC/DC Tech, Day 1

No hashtag this time, as I have to admit to being a bit bored of doing Live Trip Reports on Twitter. Maybe a break from them will change my mind on that for another bash. The trip title is a nice and simple reference to travelling on both AC and DC power on this trip, and I have to admit to a preference for AC power.

It was late in the afternoon on 10th April that I finally made a decision about this trip, the alternative option having been to go to Manchester for a Metrolink session. As much as I would love to go back there, it had been decided that a shade over 4 hours wouldn't be enough. London needed a return of Tech and although it would only be a mini visit it would suffice! This trip was strictly a solo affair, and it was to be done on the cheap so it meant using LM Only fares. ATW shack scratching could have been done, but I really couldn't face sitting on duds all day!

Work really dragged, as it always does these days, and I raced across town to get on the 1639 to the Bat Cave, having carried out my supply raid the day before [and ate the snacks the same night! - Ed]. 150105 took me on the mundane journey, and even at departure from Hereford it felt weird knowing I wouldn't get a 390 to London on this trip. A traditional Pumpkin coffee was sourced, and my moves book got a significant update as I rode north on a very vocal 150. Would I get a 350 I need for 10 miles, or indeed clear another one for 100 miles on the onward journey? Thankfully the 1833 from the Bat Cave is semi-fast through the Midlands and rather fast after Northampton too, and to be fair for just £8 all the way from Hereford it is a bargain Advance.

Sad news from the Bat Cave, my favourite coffee stop, Joe's Coffee House, has gone and is being replaced by Nero. Yuck! Pret will have to do then, and my usual filter coffee for 99p is sourced before joining 350231 on the 1833 to Euston. I had hoped for a table seated 350/1 or 350/3, but at least this was a low mileage machine on just 17 miles before I joined it so another one cleared for 100 miles later! Noddy 1878 and I made plans to meet after he arrived from Manchester [I'm still jealous! - Ed] for a pint before he headed onwards, so I would have 90 minutes to play with. What would I do I wonder...After changing into civilian clothes, I get back onto the moves book which keeps me busy until a little after Watford Junction, and filled about 7 sides of A4! I scored the microgrice at Ledburn Junction, surprised I've never done it going south before! After finally arriving 8 minutes late at 2056, I head to the concourse to discover BK has had a power outage, so for my tea [I had a large chicken curry and chips for a late lunch in Hereford at 1600 - Ed] I got a meal deal from Sainsburys. The bacon sandwich was, as expected, hellfire as were the sweet chilli Sunbites. Diet Coke, however, is as rancid as I remember it, I can't believe I used to drink this regularly years ago.

I head downstairs to the southbound platform on the Victoria line as I had time to play with, and LO weren't running out of Euston until Monday 24th April. The meal deal got devoured down here, and my stomach was now satisfied. The chocolate doughnuts later would no doubt prove worthy of consumption, and I chose a spot where I could spot Northern line sets as I hunted my last 3 Victoria line sets. Several Northern line sets got scored for sight, and after 52 minutes I was ready to give up but finally, I had major cause for celebration and winner 11001 and winner for everything 11002 took me to Warren Street. This I had major cause for celebration with, for this cleared the Victoria line 100% at long last, and it was my first LU line to clear!

After walking to Euston from Warren Street, a nice and easy walk too, to meet noddy1878, he's been held up. That pint before his train home would have to be quick now! He eventually arrives and we march to Euston Tap for our beer, for me that was Five Points' Railway Porter. £4.80 for my pint but oh so worth it.

I owed noddy1878 a pint from forever ago, so I got his pint in too. Not very often I get a round in, and I do like Euston Tap so more keen than ever to visit York Tap and Sheffield Tap later this year! After a very enjoyable drink, and a most pleasant catch-up, I see the good sir off as he headed to Paddington while I went the other way and landed double winners 21515+21516 by chance. 94 S7 half-sets to go!

A fast walk at Tower Hill got me onto the DLR to join double duds 114+115 to Shadwell, where I changed onto winner 87, dud 08 and winner 33 to Cutty Sark. Upon arrival at the surface, I discovered I actually needed Island Gardens when I checked the map! Back down I went and joined winner 31 with duds 06 and 89 on the back for the Bus Stop Leap to Island Gardens. A 5 minute walk got me to The Great Eastern pub, which has a hostel above it. Once I was finally checked in, and the guy manning reception fortunately overlooked my lack of photo ID [it's still in my non-bashing wallet at home! - Ed] when I could recite my passport number. Upstairs I went and found my allocated bed, number 12, in room 4. Thankfully this was the lowest bunk of a triple bunk bed, and wow I had forgotten how poor the headroom and space in general is in this sort of bed!

An uncomfortable matress did at least have a nice and soft pillow and thick warm quilt. I discovered my charger had lost one of its pins, and after finding the broken one I also found a socket with someone else's broken pin in it already, so I could charge my phone thankfully. Sleep was virtually non-existant but I managed some before finding my phone fully charged around 0335, so I got it back by my bed [it having been across the other side of the room - Ed] and dropped the volume level significantly. At 0500 it was going off...

21/04/2017 - AC/DC Tech, Day 2

After the worst sleep I've had in a long time, I've now vowed never to use a hostel again. OK, so it was the bargain of £11.49 but it was so not worth it. I had not packed a towel, so the much needed shower didn't happen and I got dressed and out as fast as possible!

Zones 1-4 Travelcard purchased and I had a 10 minute fester, used by filling some bottles up with squash. I reaped the rewards though with double winners 104+119 and dud 119 on the back to Greenwich. I moved to the mainline when some 465s rolled in, and with good reason as dud 465029 had winner 465165 with it for company. I took them to Cannon Street and was dismayed nowhere was open for coffee at 0615 on a Friday morning. It was down to the Tube then, and eventually I joined double winners 21370+21369 to Tower Hill. 2 more S7 half-sets got noted for sight, leaving only 8 more to see, the end is in sight! Double winners 21391+21392 ended an 18 minute fester and took me to Whitechapel. I had originally planned to join the final pair of D stocks on their last public passenger service day, but I got very distracted by double winners 21346+21345 for a leap to West Ham.

I was then going to wait for the Ds to arrive, as they were quite a few minutes late, as an open-air shot up here would have been brilliant. Alas, double winners 21449+21450 distracted me from that idea and took me to Plaistow. Double winners 21415+21416 took me onwards to Upton Park, and at all these shacks I feel most grateful my commute isn't on a ram-packed S stock as so many of the sets were. I moan about my bus commuting, I know, but I always get a seat and it could be so much worse. Double winners 21457+21458 awoke me from my thoughts [now a rather good coffee would have done the trick... - Ed] and took me to Barking, as time was running out to get breakfast and get into place for two key moves. Subway ended up being the choice of breakfast, and that bacon and cheese sub with a coffee for £2 was just amazing value. It goes without saying it went down beautifully!

I had time to play with before my key moves, so I manage to score winner 357317 with winner for everything 357328 to West Ham, leaving me with 44 357s to go. Triple winners for everything 387304+387302+387306 took me onwards to Limehouse, and another 357 fell for sight, so close to getting the lot done at last. I was only at Limehouse for 9 minutes waiting for triple winners for everything [yes I probably am the last hardcore basher to get the c2c 387s done! - Ed] 387303+387305+387301 to Fenchurch Street. I probably could have scored another 357 or two straight back out, but I was too slow to realise the 0832 to Shoeburyness was formed of 12 carriages and right next to me! I headed back to Tower Gateway and the DLR, starting things off with a leap to Shadwell on triple duds 36+67+84.

15 minutes later I joined winner 61 with duds 57+14 to Limehouse, followed eventually by winner 65 and duds 11+23 to Westferry. It was a long 10 minutes of people watching before winner 74 rolled in with duds 54+94 for a leap to Poplar. I only just made it onto dud 130 and winner 139 for a leap around the corner to Canary Wharf. On my way out of Westferry I had seen more winners, so joined triple duds 33+08+87 back around the corner to Westferry. It's not the easiest of platform changes here, and I was worried I'd taken too long and missed them, but I need not have worried as a few minutes later winner 29 rolled in with dud 80 and winner 30 for another visit to Poplar. I'd seen another winner heading to Canary Wharf, so I festered for 10 minutes for it to come back. Dud 113 and winner 106 took me to Bow Church, as I was now bored of the DLR [yes, it really is possible to say that! - Ed] and needed to get to that D stock. After the 5 minute walk to Bow Road, I eventually get lucky with double winners 21525+21526 taking me to Whitechapel.

This time I was not leaving without my photos or a ride on the Ds. I ended up waiting just over 30 minutes as they were late, but sure enough double duds 7032+7007 turned up to take me westwards to Blackfriars. It was tough to say farewell to the D stock, to have a fond farewell to another part of London's history. So many people with them as part of their childhood memories, so many of us who used them as part of our spotting trips around London, never considering back then they'd be gone one day. If time had been on my side, I'd have done the trip to Richmond but I just couldn't make it work before my train home.

Farewell D78 stock, like the C stock you'll be missed!

20p well spent at Blackfriars, I then got myself the second coffee of the day and it went down a right royal storm. I just made it upstairs in time for winner 700104 to Farringdon, and I set up base on the footbridge there. I didn't stay long, as I was soon onto winner for everything 700039 to City Thameslink, and it wasn't long before I changed platforms and landed on winner 700112 back to Farringdon. I was just getting to the screens to examine my options when winner for everything 700046 rolled in to take me to St Pancras Low Level. I wasn't saying no to that! Now I am well glad I didn't turn down the move after all, which I nearly did, as I joined double duds 319006+319436 to West Hampstead Thameslink. The reason I was glad I didn't turn it down was that the motor noise off 319006 was serious, I've not had a 319 on AC like THAT one for a LONG time, oh my days I was grinning like a Cheshire cat on that 7 minute journey!

With a pair of dud 377/5s back to town flagged, I made my way to the Jubilee line in a bid to boost my winner count and to enjoy some 96 stock thrash. Dud 96001 and winner 96080 took me to Finchley Road, onwards to Swiss Cottage I got dud 96041 and winner 96078. I ended up going back to Finchley Road on double winners for everything 96050+96009 and much to my delight, double winners for everything 96023+96026 took me to Green Park. A fast walk to the Victoria line got me onto double duds [obviously - Ed] 11086+11085 to Euston. BK was still closed due to a power outage, so I got a meal deal from Sainsburys. No-one will be surprised to read I got that bacon and ketchup sandwich again! A coffee was sourced from WHSmith and their Coffee House machine, as Pret was too busy, and I managed a decent seat on Ultra Dud 350124.

What makes 350124 ultra dud? It is by a long way my highest mileage EMU at 446 miles before this journey! After lunch was devoured, I got the moves book update going on which didn't take long. The trip report got mostly done before arrival at the Bat Cave at 1520, 3 down. Coffee was again needed and this time I went to Pret. Getting somewhat a tradition this is! Downstairs I went to find a rammed 170510 and thankfully the ECS 153 turned up. No droning for me thanks! By Northfield the trip report is complete, and I'd have finished doing my books if I had any room to move at my table, it got well busy after University. So then, let's get some Scores on the Doors going on:

Winners: 49
New sights: 28

I discovered if I hadn't got the wrong station on the DLR last night I'd have saved £1.50, that'll teach me to check properly next time! For less than 17 hours in London, I am very pleased with the results. My first LU line cleared 100%, with excellent progress on S7s and the Jubilee line, but importantly I've filled my books somewhat on mainline stuff too. Not the stuff I was planning to do, but I've made excellent progress with the DLR now. Those last 14 sets are going to take some finding! As is usually the case, I can't wait to go back to London and I'm already looking for an opportunity to go back, just this time I won't book a hostel!

You were warned about that accom.

Nice tribute to the D Stock good Sir, I must give that sainsburys sarny a go as it sounds good. C2C 387s as well and we will need to do some Northern 319s in June. Nice progress with everything else and I agree Cannon Street out of hours isnt good for refreshment.

Yes the Pret trip at the batcave is becoming a tradition and congrats on yet again avoiding 170s when doing mandatory moves on LM!

Nice work on the Victoria Line clearance! Welcome to that club! 49 winners for a short time is good. £8 to Euston from Hereford is brilliant!

It was good to see you, although once again, a fleeting meet! Cheers for the pint of Harpoon IPA once more too! Went down a treat!

Cheers, that fare really is a bargain. Not as fun as storming down to London on Virgin of course!

That pint I had was most enjoyable too, I could have spent ages in there!

Score on finally clearing the Victoria line! Sounds like a great trip there, apart from the rubbish accommodation. If you book far enough in advance, you can get £5.50 advances on Chiltern, which is only 20 minutes slower than VT (so quicker than LM, and, if you get a cat, a lot nicer than LM).

But then I need to buy a period return to Birmingham, so it would be around £31 all in. Compared to £16 for the LM Advances, or the average of £24 on Virgin Advances, that's not a cheap bash!

I think pehaps he ment a non 390 EMU? I should 390049 is quite high milage, he had it twice in 1 month on milage moves including the Newtwon Connector in 2016.

Believe it or not, 390049 is relatively high at over 300 (a couple of them like that) but nothing even close to 350124 which is currently on an enormous 560 miles!

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Well done on clearing the Victoria Line.

Regarding hostels, my general rule of thumb is to avoid ones next to or above pubs, as they are not the best ones. A notable dreadful hostel that I have stayed in was the one a short walk from Woolwich Arsenal station, with that one being above a pub. It was similar to one of these halfway houses that you would find in the USA for people who are recovering from addiction problems. Fortunately, I was only there for one night in the summer of 2014.

If you can only budget a hostel in the future, I would recommend Via Lewisham which is a 10-15 minute walk from Hither Green station. It is a former large manor house, and the dormitories do have enough room to swing a cat in. What I am saying is don't let that hostel above/next door to the pub you stayed in put you off from staying in better hostels in the future.

Regarding a budget bashing trip for a low fare, I am toying with the idea midweek next week of concentrating on the Class 365s. Glasgow - Preston is no problem regarding low priced Advances - it's the section south from there. I have decided to fit in the score of Norton Bridge on the way down, and to use London Midland vice Virgin WC (I require 5 Class 390s, but require several Class 350s).

How on earth are you going to score Norton Bridge (other than catching the bus and walking to the former enterance to the station)?

You cannot access Norton Bridge platforms by the looks of things!

I have a hostel booked in Penzance in June, although we've got a private room. The Generator in London has been a favourite in the past, although that was a long time ago. I really should try that place again actually.

London is just a fascinating place. I would happily spend a few days just pottering around and going on some of the new rolling stock up there.
The kids are getting older now so maybe I will in a couple of years time.
Well done on your clearances as others have said Tech :)

Thanks Cowley, and the same to everyone else who enjoyed the report.

Got one coming up on Friday, as I'm swinging by Liverpool briefly to hunt 319s. Only up there for 2.5 hours but I may be lucky and land some of my last 319s!

28/04/2017 - Follow Me, To The Edge

No hashtag again this time, I rather enjoyed the freedom of not doing live updates last time so I'm continuing the break from them for this trip. The title refers to a favourite tune from my teenage years, Lange's Follow Me, a proper classic dance tune which I first heard in Kevin and Perry Go Large, one of the most iconic movies of my generation. Yes, like some of you I want to watch it again! Of course, one day I might remember to reference another iconic movie of my generation, Ali G's In Da House. I watched that for the first time in years not too long ago, still really funny!

The mix of Lange's Follow Me I found the other day:

https://youtu.be/XECMfudmou0

The Nightcore version of Follow Me, which is mixed from the club mix of Follow Me:

https://youtu.be/Lik-LcYUVuA

This trip came about from finding some cheap Advances to Liverpool from Hereford, routed via Birmingham. How cheap you ask? £11.50 each way! OK so I would only have about 2.5 hours in Merseyside, but it would do. Sadly I discovered afterwards that Northern are on strike on the day of this bash, so my options for hunting required 319s [the reason for going to Merseyside! - Ed] would be rather limited. Even so, I was going to Liverpool. The odds were highly in favour of scoring the Spoons on Lime Street station, and required beers, if nothing else! Off I went on the first bus of the day [the second one in theory would get me there on time, but it would be ultra tight - Ed], and much to my surprise one of my favourite buses was in use this morning. The traditional Pumpkin coffee was sourced while I waited for my train to arrive, on this occasion I was given 170504+153371. It was the first time in quite some time that I was on the 0845 to the Bat Cave, I had forgotten it goes via Worcester Shrub Hill and so takes longer than most trains. It's not a lot, granted, and it means an extra 28 chains of mileage, but the reversal is such an endurance. Shorter than on the evening services admittedly, but still!

My stomach was raging and my eyes very tired all the way to the Bat Cave, clearly waking up at 0525 or so hit me early on. As you can imagine, I was rather looking forward to a coffee break, preferably including food, upon arrival in Birmingham! The Sunbites from a Morrisons meal deal got devoured after we slammed to a halt halfway between Barnt Green and Longbridge, the logic being the +17 was now going to be tighter than I would like. I arrived at 1021, only 2 down thanks to slack/pathing time in the timetable. I managed therefore to get a large coffee from Upper Crust [it used to be £2.43 with Bite card discount, now it's £2.52! - Ed] as Pret were busy. 350244 was in charge of taking me north, just as well as it was one of 4 350/2s only cleared for 2 miles 48 chains previously. No time to get hot food sadly.

We get pathed onto the Down Fast after Stafford, so no new track for me today. It was a pelting run until Basford Hall though, where I either saw 66553 or 66953 at 1127. Annoyingly I couldn't be sure enough on the ID, but after that ride from Stafford the following lyrics sounded quite appropriate:

[Tune]make me fly, the passion for our wings...[/tune]

323208 was noted on the Arriva Traincare depot, in for works I'm assuming. Eventually our path into Crewe was given, having had to wait for a slightly late 175 to get out of the way. 09204 was a surprising score for sight on the Arriva depot. The meal deal got concluded by Runcorn, where the sun had finally come out. It was gone again before Edge Hill, where I noted winner for sight 66751!

[Tune]and make the leap of faith, and don't look down...[/tune]

I don't find 507021 upon arrival as we had planned, so I went and got an Area C Saveaway for £3.90 as I don't need the All Areas one today. I rushed over to join the 1221 to Manchester Oxford Road [services were hugely altered today due to the Northern/RMT strike, which I have to confess to supporting - Ed] which is just as well, as it was winner 319374, happy days!

I took 319374 to Wavertree Technology Park, as I was not satisfied with just an Edge Hill leap, not when this 319 was pretty vocal! The next train to Wigan was waited for, just as well as against my belief it was winner 319369, which led to a rush down the stairs and into the motor coach. Onwards to Roby where I had a +2, and into platform 3 I went. When is platform 4 going to open, it's been forever since it was installed! I suspect a similar situation applies at Huyton. The tight plus was made with relevant ease [helps I race about the place as default! - Ed] onto dud 319375 back to Edge Hill, scoring the motor coach as I went. Oh what aural treats the 319s are, I'll never understand people who don't like them [fishquinn, you immediately came to mind! - Ed], I really won't!

[Tune]and dance with me, into the starfire, like tonight is all there is...[/tune]

After nearly 20 minutes, it was discovered dud 319376 was to take me to Lime Street. There was nothing better to go bashing any time soon, so I re-boarded 319376 for an Edge Hill leap. Broad Green didn't appeal [with the motorway nearby, why would it? - Ed] you see, and this 319 was my first of the class to get Super Dud'd! Another 20 minute fester got me the ID of the only other working I could realistically do and it fell to dud 319368 for one last bit of 319 motor coach thrash into the depths of Slime Street, as it's not affectionally nicknamed. It's worth noting now that just platform 6 remains to be micro-griced here, one day it will be done. I noted whilst at Edge Hill banners talking about Slime Street re-modelling and re-signalling. I have to confess to not knowing about that before!

The Spoons here had been required for ages, so I went and scored two winner halves of what turned out to be revolting, tasteless beers. Those who follow me on Untappd will have seen my disgust! My service in M&S was even worse, I've never known a retail worker with such a disinterest in her job. I was more tempted to take the survey offered if I'm honest, as a retail man myself I was shocked she's in a job!

Anyway, it was time to go and have a look at the RMT picket which was nearly over by now. The good news is that I was to get 350376 back to the Bat Cave, and I found a table with surprising ease for a power socket. 507021 managed to find me by this point, having had a rather farceful day. Still, it was nice to have had the brief bit of company! After Liverpool South Parkway, when he had to alight, I got some tunes on and got the trip report updated. Which took a surprising amount of time, until just before departure from Stafford! It wasn't quite as productive as I'd have liked, but two winners are better than none. 3 330ml cans of beers were consumed on the 350 [it's payday! - Ed] and I felt worse for wear, considering I'd barely eaten all day. Nevertheless, a BK move was cancelled and I got a Pret coffee before boarding 170514+170512 on the 1649 to Hereford.

"Tech, your last bus is at 1815!" I hear you all screaming. Yes but I have a lift home at 2000 on this occasion, hence going home later than normal. I felt a lot better for my coffee, food having been postponed until I arrive in Hereford. I had a few options I liked the sound of, but I wouldn't decide on that until at least Worcester. Oh, and it seemed highly appropriate, as I trekked through Ledbury Tunnel, to mention this:

[Tune]Follow me, to the edge[/tune]

I had been more than ready for proper food for some hours now, so you can imagine how much my stomach was raging since Worcester! I needed to create new memories at both Beefy Boys and at The Glass Tandoori. Both do good food, and I really couldn't decide between one and the other. A flip of a coin wasn't needed in the end, as I chose to phone up Pizza Hut and ordered a large meat feast pizza. That filled a crater in the stomach, and was well worth £5.99! The final bit of the day was a long walk to meet my sister before a lift home.

Great to see you again Tech, even if it was only for 15 minutes or so. Hopefully I won't have such a diabolical morning next time.

Sounds like you had a productive couple of hours though. 350376 was a dud for me (not a massive surprise to be honest), but the other 350 I went on during the early afternoon was a winner, so it was something positive to come out of it. :)

Good to get a couple of winners on what would have been a quieter than normal day! Kevin & Perry! What an awesome movie! I saw it again recently and forgot how brilliant it is!

Not sure I could listen to those tunes you linked to, for too long! It felt like it was about 1000bpm! :o

350369 was leaving Runcorn as I arrived, I suspect that will have been your winner? If not it mighr have been one of them I saw going through Edge Hill whilst waiting for 319s. Glad you got something out of it, and nice to see you again!

I'm glad someone picked up on the movie reference! I might still have Kevin and Perry Go Large on DVD somewhere, might have to find it and watch it again this evening!

If you thought that Nightcore tune was intense, you probably wouldn't like another tune from my past, Scott Brown's Acid Dreams. That is proper intensely banging and not for the faint hearted! <D

It was indeed, made my day. To be honest, the more I ride the 350s, the more I like them. I wasn't a big fan at first, but I've got to admit they're really starting to grow on me now. They're on my list of classes to clear, but not quite as high up as others.

Yeah, likewise mate. Hopefully we can catch up again properly soon. :)
