This is going to make sound rediculously old but that sort of night holds absolutely no attraction for me and whilst I sympathise with being shattered on a bash I would much rather be doing it after a hard job of work not a night on the sozzle.

All in all sounds like a good final crankfest and it shows how far you can get in a day if starting early. Glad to you didnt end up on any 170s and that you and me both got Loco Haulage as part of our recent moves.

Another excellent read there - sounds like you've had a good 2016, with a great trip to end it! Getting a hotel in Hereford seems a complete waste of money though - surely it would've been better spent at flagging the 'normal' evening and going to Mancc on the Sunday to have two days in the north? ;)

Ah well I've nearly done better than you Andy, as I counted my drinkage on Sunday! Only issue is I'm not sure whether it was 4 or 5 pints of the beyond hellfire mango cider. 330ml bottle of beer at home as a 'pre-lash' then 2 halves of Christmas-related beers prior to going to the main event, then a half of the cider (not wanting to be too brave to begin with!), which then led to at least two more before a Butty Bach, a sip of Becks Alcohol Free, another 2 pints or 3 pints of mango cider. Next location, a pint of beer followed by a scrumpy-style cider. Next location, a different cider again and ended with a pint of Desperados (I know, I know, but it was required and I wasn't buying!) as well as a sip of tequila and coke and Ciroc Red Berry and lemonade.

Just a few drinks then, now I've typed that up...:oops:

I was after a social, not sure how that decision came about to be honest. For someone who doesn't normally enjoy these things (I guess not having a certain woman around helped! Anyone mentioning her name will find their name onto my blocked list!) it was a shock that I enjoyed it. Wasn't meant to be out so late...

My original plan didn't see me head to Manchester, and I planned the train bit after I planned the rest!

It doesn't normally appeal to me either!

Aye I was glad not to endure any 170s too. I really need to do my RailMiles update...

Well my 2017 started well! Got an early finish and dropped into position for a quick spin with my machine, 43002! :D I thought it was almost on 3,000 miles but not so sadly. I was bouncing with joy mind, I hadn't had it in years!

Tonight I've booked another trip, and Tech's Big Bang 2017 is only 6 days away! I need to find my TPP Discussion thread...And my 2016 Rolling Review thread will be concluded soon!

Welcome one and all to my first trip report of 2017! Doesn't it feel like forever since Tech Rocks Da Party on 19th December 2016? It sure did to me at least! With the Crazy Season well behind us at long last, and some tough times since, it was finally back to the rails and what an excellent year it promises to be, with [planned! - Ed] major trips including an ALR and my first visit to Norway, amongst many others. Full details to be revealed once time off is authorised, which may be tricky to get done with other things due to happen from January. So the trip title, it's become an annual tradition to have a multi-day bash at the beginning of the year [OK so it's only the second year of it but it's a new tradition! - Ed] to kick things off in the way I expect them to continue all year. 2016 saw me go all out on conquering NET, this year it's the same idea in SPT Land! Blindtraveller and his wife were kindly inviting them into their home for the duration of my visit, so I was also enjoying the opportunity for a good social. Even so, the plan was to still enjoy multiple days of red penning and shack scoring!

I came down with a nasty bug in the early hours [must have been just after midnight - Ed] of Day 1, and to be honest I can't be bothered to go into detail on the northbound journey due to feeling awful. So much so I decided to save on mobile data by not going on Twitter as the patience to tweet just wasn't there and Day Nurse wasn't making a lot of difference! The only things worth mentioning are:

170505+170503 took me to the Bat Cave, after which I sourced a big bottle of water for the National Express journey (kindly paid for by Blindtraveller, referred to throughout the report as BT);

17 and 21 were scored in quick succession, following an unexpected score with a leap on 168328;

FN63 PWK took me onwards from Birmingham Coach Station to Edinburgh Bus Station overnight, and doss was only here and there during the night. BT met me at the coach station and we got an unrecorded bus to his place.

Day 2 will be better, after all a bit of kip in a proper bed was had first!

Ah, finally. Tech heads north on a fabled journey to finish off Scotland! Good luck with that ;)

It is indeed that one I'm after Kite, fingers crossed it'll produce later...

08/01/2017 - Tech's Big Bang 2017, Day 2

Wow what a rough night that was! I had forgotten what an overnight coach journey can be like, and it was the first one I'd done while unwell. Never again! I should have cancelled my trip, looking at it, and if it had been my money paying for it I would have done, but this wasn't the case. After we got to BT's place, I crashed for a few hours in a bed to get some proper sleep. The coffee afterwards was more than welcome, as was some medication. The chest was still hurting, but the insides weren't playing up so much now. Still, I had survived, just, and was now feeling well enough to be social and all that once the coffee kicked in. Not the way to start a trip, but in my defence I had felt a bit unwell for a while and had had to force myself to go to work during the Crazy Season. I wasn't on my death bed yet!

OK then, back to business with some goals to reach by 31st December 2017:

- I plan to hit 12,000 miles or more;
- New for 2017 is the goal to have 2,000 miles or more;
- Also new for 2017 is the goal to have a minimum of 4 air scores:
- 500 UK winners;
- 150 UK shack scores;
- 200 new sights.

Some of those will be outrageously easy to do with a bit of planning. I was going to include some road mileage targets, but I feel I'd be cheating with my approximate 43 mile round trip to/from work 5 days a week! The above goals will be in my 2017 Rolling Review post for January 2017, so expect some duplication.

After a very casual and social start to the trip, me and BT get a taxi to Haymarket station in the afternoon. There's just enough time for me to get my tickets and we arrive on the platform for double duds 158722+170471 to winner shack Edinburgh Gateway. Wow that 158 put in an excellent vocal performance, most enjoyed by both of us! A bit of a wander finds us nothing of interest, as expected, and we have a walk down to the tram stop. Good timing too as winner for everything 265 turns up for a leap to Gogarburn. While waiting for the next one back to the city centre, which was winner 272, I spied an Airport bound winner. We're both bored of the tram by Murrayfield Stadium and we end up festering for 21 minutes for winner for everything 274 to York Place. Only two trams left to get for sight and 11 more for haulage now!

Onwards, we get Lothian Buses' 362 onwards on route 16 to Asda Leith, as I had left my case on the 170 to Birmingham! As I type this I'm waiting for a response from LM about it, fingers crossed I'll be reunited on Saturday with it! Naturally some new clothes were required, nothing fancy but it got the job done. Some food and adult beverages are also sourced, and we join route 16 again with Lothian Buses' 815 doing the honours of taking us back.

Sorry it won't have been an exciting read, however I can assure you that will change with Day 3!

He left so early today he never took his sandwitches. Im now going to have to go chasing after him or all youl read is about how hungry he is.

Glad I talked him out of going to gateway via bus and tram as not only would it have taken twice as long the whole thing wouldnt have been much fun.

And going via bus & tram wouldn't have counted as a shack score due to the station having barriers (if said barriers were in operation yesterday is a different matter) ;)

Good news on the winning trams, bad news on the missing bag

09/01/2017 - Tech's Big Bang 2017, Day 3

Well that was a surprise, having gone to sleep early last night I still didn't expect to be awake by 0340! Howling winds, an angry stomach and the cage door being open now got this lion out of bed just after 0400. The trip report was brought back up to date, forum and Twitter caught up on and final preparations saw me out in plenty of time for the first bus of the day on route 37. Lothian's 807 did the honours, and what surprised me was that there were 5 other people joining me for it. That was nothing compared to the dozens who got on at the next few stops, wow this run is popular! Where they're all going and what they're doing keeps the brain occupied while I drink coffee.

Nice and wet in Edinburgh this morning, and some early morning spotting gets me 6 MK4s scored for sight. Bizarrely, I rather enjoyed the racket 66740 made on departure, 50 minutes late for an unknown reason, on the 0450 to Fort William! 73966 on the back, providing train supply only, was a score for sight which was welcome. As was the observation of 43303+43304 arrive ECS to form the 0606 to Plymouth! Duds but the sound helped the ears recover from 170s droning on idle. A much needed PNB was 30p well spent, and I spend some time waiting for the empty stock to arrive with the 68s so I could ID which ones are out today. I must have been too early as I didn't see them before going for my train. The Nescafe Algeria coffee machine in WHSmith is out of service, and I didn't fancy Nero coffee and definitely not Costa's stuff. No wonder it was doing a good trade today!

220031 is joined for my first move of the day, and I spend most of the journey getting the books up to date. We arrive 1 minute early, and after some spotting I go to Tesco Express then to Pizza Crolla for a crusy bacon roll. The breakfast was OK but I've had better. Coffee is sourced from Via Italia, where between 0730 and 1100 any single or double shot coffee can be got for just £1, sit in or takeaway. A nice little find that!

At Queen Street, I observe 156496 which I need. After chinging out £5.90 for a piece to Dalmuir, imagine my dismay when I see it wasn't attached to the 0821, and that Super Dud 156445 was also in the formation! Thankfully I was saved from disaster, not by International Rescue, but winner 156476 for the thrashy ride to Dalmuir. I just make it over the bridge in time for winner 334006 to winner shack Singer. Dud 334036 then takes me to winner shack Drumry where, as it's now gone 0900 I get my Roundabout for £6.80. Dud 318262 takes me forward to winner shack Drumchapel and my gen request has been answered! Super Dud 320301 and dud 318263 take me towards the city centre to hunt shacks on the other side of town. 318254 is annoyingly noted just after Westerton, where if I'd bailed I would have got it in the book instead of waiting for it to come out later! 318263 joins the Super Dud Club, the membership of which I believe is close to 600 members now. Winner shack Shettleston is settled upon once I discover the lavatory on the 318 is out of use and the phone was back to full charge.

Good choice as it turned out, as the next westbound train was winner 334018 with dud 334017! Onwards then to winner shack Carntyne and I end up heading to winner shack Blairhill on double 318268+320304. A short wait gets me, however, to winner shack Coatdyke with dud 334012 and winner 334027. 3 more 334s to go, and one of them was racing to Edinburgh just before I left for winner shack Easterhouse with double duds 334012+334002. A shame no Easter eggs were found at Easterhouse, tut tut! A short wait felt like forever here, with double duds 320304+318268 to winner shack Garrowhill. The rain and cold strike hard here and my 19 minute wait felt like a long time. Double duds 334005+334031 take me to winner shack High Street and 334005 joins the Super Dud Club.

A revenue block is navigated just in time to get to 318258 for a leap to winner shack Bellgrove, this 318 now also into the Super Dud Club. Double duds 318250+318263 take me west to Partick, where I have a +5 for a Motherwell service of particular importance. All will be explained...How 318263 got onto this train, however, I have yet to work out. I had it earlier, then I swear it was one I noted at Blairhill going west. Confused isn't the word right now, and a search on RTT doesn't help.

GRR! BOWLED OUT! 318254 failed to stick to diagram, although it appears the working had major issues in the morning so that didn't help. Instead I get a pair of duds with 320306+320311, the fact 311 is now one step closer to Super Dud is not much of a consolation prize! Anyway, after a short fester at Glasgow Central Low Level which produced nothing worth doing, I head upstairs for a quick supply raid, I met up with BT after his long endurance run on 380101 from Edinburgh. Sandwiches for lunch were gratefully received, and 156478 failed to produce as well. So we head back downstairs and BT clearly acted as a good luck charm, as next up were double winners for everything 320411+320412 to Partick! After getting BT a day pass for SPT Subway, the ticket office cheekily charging 50p extra to pay by card, we head down to the Subway, as I need 31 sets down there and BT wanted a final spin before the modernisation kicks in majorly on the Subway.

Winner 133 led dud 204 with winner for everything 103 on the back takes us for a Bus Stop Bash to Kelvinhall. Next up were winners 119+202 led dud 102 to Hillhead, and dud 113 led double winners for everything 207+118 for a longer run and a sit down to Buchanan Street. Surprisingly comfortable the seats are too! Triple winners 120+205+115 take us for another Bus Stop Bash to St. Enoch, after which the sets on the Outer Circle were all dud. We swap to the Inner Circle via the barriers here, and triple winners 130+201+101 take us back to Buchanan Street. Double winners 124+208 led dud 126 on our leap to St. George's Cross, and we get triple winners 107+121+105 to Kelvinbridge. 127+129+132 are triple winners to Hillhead, and 130+201+101 are already back so we get them to Partick. It only took between 1400 and 1515 to score everything out down here, although obviously at peak time that will no doubt be different.

Back up at ground level, we visit Bean2Cup near the exit for what turned out to be 2 very nice coffees. We then end up joining dud 320309 to winner shack Hamilton Central where it's gone quite cold so the 15 minutes there were less than enjoyable! Super Dud 318257 is up next to take us to Motherwell, and we make our way hastily to the waiting room on platform 1 for the XC run to Edinburgh, as I was on XC Only tickets. Very good value in my eyes, just a shame it's Voyagers! 221136 takes us east and after arrivial in Edinburgh it's a 15 minute wait for the bus back.

Very productive day there!

A 220 from Waverley to Glasgow and back from Motherwell? Why? Just why? You're absolutely nutty, even though XC only tickets are cheaper! You should have got an early morning 334 to Queen Street and back!

A big shame about 254 not producing too. Maybe next time.

That was an interesting trip and some good scores, units and shacks. Well done getting 129 on the subway, I've been after that one for years, it's the only one I need for haulage.
